Hi.

My Main is a Mage and I want to put together the perfect party with lots of damage.

First how should I skill my mage?

I want him to be the only mage in the party is that a good idea?

Then I want a tank, namely Cassandra.

The other two should be really good in doing damage to the enemies.I am not sure which companions fit that role best.

Can you give me some advice please?

If you go mage go Rift.

Cassandra.

2 Rogues. (either pair works, Sera + Cole will do most damage but they have conflicting relationships if you dont mind that)

Sera is your early/mid game pick since she do most damage from 3 rogues early on (bianca suck without all crit upgrades).

What do you think about a 2handed warrior?

Does my mage need spirit spells too?

Cassandra can be nice 2h warrior later. But she must be SnB at start, before she gets her templar and guard abilities.

She is nice wit hbull rush and templar stuff if you go for combos.

My oppinion that if you have only mage in party he must have some spirit spells. Barrier, Dispell are particulairyly must have ones.

Dispell is most understimated spell in this game and it is , with Barrier, are no brainers for ANY mage setup.

My dragon fighting team was always Blackwall, Iron Bull, and Solas with me as 2-handed rogue and that was a good team. Now that I'm a mage I keep the same group, just no rogue. I would go rift mage if you're going to be the only mage, and like others have said you should grab barrier. As a mage I actually like the static cage ability (I think it's called) and skill it up to do extra shock damage for every other elemental damage the mob takes. It traps most enemies inside and you can throw rift pull on top.

I would really love to have a 2handed warrior in my team. Which NPC fits that best and which skilltrees should I use?

My go to team is:
Inquisitor - Rift Mage (control and Barrier support)
Blackwell - S&S Champion (tank)
Cassandra - 2H Templar (off tank and debuf)
Sera - Tempest/archer (ranged damage and lockpick)

However, if I am facing a dragon, I bring Viv for constant Barrier support while the rest of us damage

Running with:

Vivienne (Spirit/KE/Ice)

Sera (Tempest/Archer)

Blackwall - (S&S/Champion)

My Inquisitor is a Rouge (Assassin/Archer/Subtrefuge)

Strong party on Nightmare and Vivienne VS Sera&Blackwall banter is hilarious.

If I have a problem with higher level Dragons I swap Sera with a S&S Iron Bull. Piece of cake.

I Run with:

Inquisitor rift mage, (crowd control)
Blackwall (as Blackwall)
Vivienne or Dorian (Barrier support / damage)
Varric (Tricks of the Trade great synergy with rift mage)

Going as Rift Mage with Iron Bull, Cassandra and then switching between Varric or Sera for the last spot. The two first also because they are my favorite characters, the third a semi-necessity (If you don't despair at forever locked doors, I would also suggest Dorian as the 4th).

Overall this party has everything covered. Cassandra takes the blows and does moderate damage, Iron Bull wrecks everything up close, Sera/Varric wrecks everything from a distance and I make all the people fall down.

I switch out Iron Bull for Companion quests or if I really want to bring someone to a place (like Solas to the Emerald Graves)

That was my exact team during the first playthrough. Blackwall, Iron Bull, Solas, my 2-handed rogue. Worked fine, but didn't really know what I was doing :P Not sure who to go with now during  my second go though, as a mage.

If you want a "perfect" party, picking a mage for your main was probably a bad idea. There are two classes the computer absolutely suck at, namely the traditional two handed warrior and the dagger rogue. An ideal set up would probably require you to play as one of those, with a buffing mage, tank and archer completing the set up.

... but of course, none of this is required. You don't need a perfect party. Just have the basics covered and you'll be fine.

My party is currently:
Me, Inquisitor Storm/Rift Mage
Cassandra, the tank and such. Part Templar. I refer to her as Tanky Vantemplarguard.
Sera/Varric, as Sera has poison and Thousand Cuts while Varric's traps synergize greatly with my Herald.
Vivienne, the Fiery Knight Enchanter of Death.

Great combination. Varric is fun to use/Sera's poison and Flask of Fire+Explosive Shot combos are useful, Vivienne keeps our Barriers up and heals us while murderfying demons with Spirit Blade and Dispel, and Cassandra is a pure team player, taunting, dispelling, and giving guard like nothing.

Offtopic, but question: Should I use Lightning Bolt over Mind Blast? Both are pretty good when some Brute is charging full speed at me.

My main was a Mage, I Spec'ed her with Rift Mage, Inferno, and Spirit. But Knight-Enchanter pours out TONS of damage.

I use Blackwall as my 2-handed warrior, and I usually bring another mage. It used to be Solas, but not any more. (  ) So I use Vivienne.

As for the last party memeber, it changes from being Sera and Cole. Sera is an Tempest archer and Cole is my Rogue Assassin.

But my Dragon fighting party is two tanks and two powerful mages. Rogues don't help with Dragons very much imo
