If I recall, there was a fight and a codex that implied that a mage at the Conclave was transformed into a rage demon after the explosion, sort of like how the baroness from Awakening became a pride demon. So it's possible that Justinia could also have been transformed into a spirit of faith or something similar in the Fade.

I like Cole's answer to what she was: "Helpful". :P And it's true. She wanted to help, she does help, and afterwards she lets us tell the story that makes the most sense to us. I rather liked that spirit, probably more than I'd have liked the real Justinia (seeing as how the real Justinia did indeed fail Leliana).

if you recall
the opening video then, the
woman that reached out to
you was that spirit first, then
Justina when you got close.
So the spirit is definitely
associated closely with
Justina but, is not her.

I don't see any problem here, trapped Justinia was the last thing the Inq had seen before the kaboom happens, whatever spirit happened to be around could easily take her form. In a sense it's the Inq, who gave shape to it. This, or mb it was attracted by Justinia herself and her faith. Either way the spirit remembers some part of what Justinia had been. My impression is that it was Justinia's memory, not the Inquisitor's. It's like watching vids and pictures trying to recall the drunk night and fill the gaps.

We don't even know that the Justinia who went (and died in) to the Conclave is the real Divine Justinia - she could be

It is simple. She claims that the nightmare has taken memories from the Inquisitor. She is what controls when they appear. In addition, these are supposed to be MEMORIES.

The only thing the Inquisitor knows is the cry for help and opens the door to scream "What is going on here?!". The memory itself would NOT include what is seen before; The image of Divine Justinia suspended above with Grey Wardens surrounding her and Corypheus using the orb the way he is depicted.

In addition, the rest of the party sees these same things. It is a vision given to the Inquisitor and the party to explain the events. It is not specifically memories.

If its an oversight then its a bad one, else the only conclusion based on all the evidence is that it is either a spirit imitating Justinia or something else entirely, especially considering the fact that I have seen nothing that would indicate a human being having that sort of power.

Everything is else just pure speculation and supposition.

You don't say.

It was a spirit that took her form. Of course I didn't tell that to Cassandra. I often find myself telling companions what they like to hear whether or not I agree with the sentiment.

Fixed that.  You may well be right, of course, but short of 100% proof, your thread title is nothing more than speculation as well.

I have hard time believing it was a spirit of faith. To me it seems more like it was Andraste's spirit. But to each guess is their own. :)

It really is what remain of Justina. Remember a soul can be trapped in the fade. We seen it twice. Once in broken circle and the other time during the time we were trapped in the fade in the black marsh

The being is a spirit of Faith.

Faith exists without explanation or proof of existence. It is belief without proof.  When asked point blank if she is Justinia, she says "it would take more time than we have for me to prove or disprove who I am".  She asks you to accept her help with no more than an assurance on her part that she wants to help you (a "leap of faith").

When you make your own determination later who she is, (I chose "a memory of the Divine") she says something along the lines of "If that is the story you wish to tell, it's not a bad one".

I think she's "Faith".

I sincerely hope that it was not just a Spirit of Faith. I fully agree with the aboves that everything she represented clearly indicates that she is one.

But like someone said earlier, I have a serious problem with her being something already known and so easily quantifiable. Mostly because of her absurd level of strength/power. The Nightmare truly is the most powerful being ever shown in the Dragon Age universe. This Justinia/Spirit one-shotted it; at least temporarily. Whatever she was must be truly impressive. To suddenly say she's a Spirit of Faith really undercuts the mystery, and borderline goes against established canon.

I personally think she's the antithesis of the Nightmare. Whereas that is the embodiment of an entire world's collective terror; I feel that Justinia was an uber-spirit; such as Belief. Similar to Faith but far more powerful, just like Nightmare is similar to fear, terror, and even compassion, but far more powerful.

TL&DR: I think it was "Belief."

What confuses me is that the game's intro shows Justinia glowing like a spirit, but the actual memory recovered in the Fade shows her looking completely normal. It makes me wonder if there really was something more going on during the explosion. I haven't finished the game, but do we ever find out why Corypheus needed the Divine as a sacrifice? That seems very strange. If the Chantry is a total fraud and there is no Andraste or Maker preventing Corypheus from conquering the Golden City, why does he need to sacrifice a completely pointless religious leader?

I actually have a theory where the memories have been altered.

I mean, they were STOLEN and in Cory's nightmare, for god's sake, and we are never told when, where, or why.
