How to ensure barrier is effective from your mages

So, I've been playing DAMP for a little while now and I noticed that it would be a simple matter for me to keep people alive all day long if they grouped tighter for most mob situations.  Barrier (which negates tons of damage to the entire party while increasing stamina/magic regen) is a small AOE.  I notice so many assassins and melee characters rush in to get those kills up ASAP that I'm only able to barrier myself and maybe 1 other person.  It's either that or I can barrier the 1 melee guy who took off like a bat out of hell to get their kills in. If groups hung back for a fraction of a second as a group more, Barrier would be way more effective in the trials.  Also, at the banner portion, if everyone groups somewhat close to the person with barrier, they should be able to keep a barrier on everyone almost constantly (at least from lv 18-20 they certainly can).  The problem I see is that people run around all buck wild and end up taking tons of damage from it. Q_Q.

That's all I have. Thanks for listening to my mini rant. hee-hee.

I just ignore rushers and never Barrier them. It's one thing to be the Aggro puller, but its another when I'm standing in the doorway with Barrier primed before the enemies we're about to engage and balls out bruiser just has to be all "I'm gonna win! Rawr!!!!".

So they can die all they want. I feel no guilt.

The best way to make efficient use of your barrier is to know where your mouse cursor is.

Its very very rare to find pugs that will wait for the keeper for barrier UNLESS the player makes it known to the group that she expects people to gather for barriering. Players can do this by running AHEAD of the entire team, prep the barrier graphics, and wait for the team to gather around for  barrier, while any dumb enough to run past the keeper gets nothing from the keeper. Another way is for the player to tell the team through mic to gather around for barrier and to yell at people who don't, or who fall because they decided not to get your barrier. My experience is that 80-90% of pug teams will follow your instructions, with the rare exception of people who are just plain stupid or too inexperienced to know what barrier is.

I'm not a big fan of fade step on keeper, but if there is a valid reason to get the ability, it is to rush ahead of the team and prep barrier casting animation to let the team know where you want them to gather for barriers.

Veramis,

I think I'm going to just have to use my mic more and start telling fools to group up.  If there was a text option, I could just spam that too.  I also suppose the fade step makes sense only to barrier people but it seems a waste to use it for that.  What I've been doing is just starting off by standing in the doorway and prepping the graphic and spamming the F4 button so they hear me yell *here here* lol.   It only really matters on the perilous difficulty from what I've noticed because the damage is so high.

Assassins need to run ahead and do not need Barrier for initial attack(s) if ever. They wait for tank however and tank is the one who Keeper should keep Barrier on as priority. It depends on many things like group composition but generally on Threatening there is no need for Keeper to worry about rushers because of Barrier. I actually want melees to be little ahead of team.

How does it feel not being able to target those pesky spirits shooting at you from distance? Mouse master race!

Assassins need to stop getting smoked then to prove they don't need barrier lol. Until I see a good assassin I guess I'll take your word for it. :o

FYI, you don't need to Barrier the entire team.  The Assassin should be behind the enemies waiting for an opener, not sitting with the group trying to get Barrier (they have Stealth and don't need it).  If you want to Barrier the entire team then stay just ahead of them and have Barrier waiting for when they go through the doorway leading to the next area.  Fade Step works wonderfully for this (and the 12s base cooldown makes it available quickly).  Too many Keepers/Elementalists expect others to wait for them instead of understanding who to cover and when.  If you are holding up the team then you are doing it wrong.

Also, just because the team is together does not mean you should cast Barrier.  All too often I see mages cast Barrier in the spawn area and watch it expire before the first enemies show up.  Why bother?  Besides, a clutch Barrier to avoid taking damage is worth more than one that covers the entire team.  Smart players will adjust to you if they want Barrier.  Otherwise just focus on the tank or player with threat.

You really don't need barrier as assassin, you don't take dmg.

Indeed, I was talking about hypothetical assassin knowing her/his trade. Reality differs, hence your experience with others not waiting for Barrier. There are places where casting it on everyone comes naturally and makes sense - say lever doors - but as Keeper keep your self and tank alive and if you can the rest too but I would not worry about them too much. PUGs are not routine in sense that anything can happen and Keeper often needs to make split second decisions and for that there are priorities.

If you aren't around me when I'm about to use barrier, that's just too bad.

I found a better one:

The best way to make efficient use of your barrier is to know what under your mouse (or cat) cursor is.

I'm a tank and love me a keeper. I think it's a joint effort to get barrier. I always hold before big pulls till I get barrier, it's the tanks job to dictate pace.

I guess when I see that my barrier can be up every single time before it expires, I just think man... I could really help absorb a ton of damage for people here if they were a bit closer together when we take the zurg at banner placement time.   Also, I think it would help if I had a solid tank pal to play/cover with.  As it is now I end up in groups that are all dps and most of those dps die rather quickly :(

Thanks for the tips though.  Some of this makes plenty sense and I have to start rocking my ptt in PUGS until I find some solid groups to run with.

I usually follow tank like a dog. Wait till you get into group with Elementalists and other Keepers. Nobody will run away from mass and constant Barriers ;)

Yes, to all new Keepers, when the group stand by you before a battle, they are waiting for you to cast Barrier before they engage.

Kwicherbichen Keeper. It's your job to cast Barrier on yourself and revive me when I go down.

You're not the boss of me!!!

I'm really afraid of what I've been hearing about the upgrade to Barrier not working unless you cast it on yourself, so I havent skilled into it yet.

When I play a Keeper, I usually run in together with a Warrior, any warrior. And then Barrier us both. If Assassin is nearby, good for him.

... May not be the best for other Mages or Archers...
