Ok so I realise there are no 'right' companions for missions and quests but I'm after a rough list of people who have some kind of special or extraordinary interaction with the mission or quest at hand for my second playthrough.

 

e.g. when I did crestwood for the first time I didn't have Varric, much to my disappointment when I entered underneath the flooded area into the dwarven ruins/deep roads. I kept thinking he would have had a lot to say, and without him there was little conversation amongst my party.

Thankfully this isn't DA2 where you had to min-max who was in your party to get the most approval or disapproval. Still have twitches over Isabella and her quirky nature...

 

I will say though, TAKE SOLAS WITH YOU FOR THE TEMPLE OF MYTHAL. Seriously, it's rather eye opening.

Having varric with you when you go to the hissing wastes gives you some extra insight (and it's even better if you are a dwarf too).
Cassandra and Vivienne are good for the Templar mission. Blackwall for adamant. Solas for elfy things. Lol

If you take Vivienne along with you to the Temple of Mythal, she has some pretty hilarious exchanges with Morrigan, whom she despises. You'll hear them when talking to Morrigan in normal mode (not cinematics).

 

And Solas has already been mentioned at the same location - I loved it when I told him and Morrigan that they look like they're about to kiss when they argue  (when you're done appraising the statue of Fen'Harel).

Yeah, not if you have the banter bug. He barely said anything. 

 

If you do not have the banter bug, it's probably a good idea to bring him

Thats the downside of this game, doing my second playthru and now I can do the story pacing and compagnion story relevance more as intended which is impossible the first time round, and what a difference it makes!!

Bring Solas to Adamant and the Temple of Mythal

Bring Dorian on Iron Bull''s personal quest

Bring your love interest to the Winter Palace

 

I brought Cole to Adamant and it was awesome, don't know what other people think

I hear bringing Cole to Temple Mythal is also pretty good.

Viviene is surprisingly uninteresting at Winter Palace, I wouldn't bother

 

I haven't brought Varric with me to Adamant yet, but I'm guessing it's a good choice.

Solas pretty much anywhere except Winter Palace. Cole,Sera and Iron Bull are good for Adamant if you want a laugh.  Solas or Cassandra for interesting stuff. Sera for Winter Palace for some comedy the rest are kinda meh to bring along.

It depends on how you want the story or quest to go. Each one changes things like what the elder one tells you every one when you take them into the fade. It can also change the fights.
But I did like Vivenin arguing with Sera, or Blackwall.

I recommend bringing Blackwall to Adamant. He might give awesome speech to Wardens and save them.

I think that taking Solas with you for the Fade and the Mythal temple missions is pretty much essential (not mechanically essential, but his own input on the missions' context and circumstances is pretty good). Also, bring Iron Bull when you kill your first Dragon.

Bringing Cole to Adamant and into the Fade was great.

 

Solas to Temple of Mythal and Fade. --- I think this one is a must. You get a lot on elven lore this way.

 

LI in Winter Palace.

 

Varric with Hawke missions

 

Dorian in Mythal - he's pretty shocked by the fact that Tevinter didn't do anything to the elves.

 

Other than those, I haven't played a lot of playthroughs to try out different combinations so I can't tell.

After Adamant, Cassandra often remarked that she wished she could have seen Justinia...  so my second playthrough will likely take her along on adamant instead of blackwall.

Cole in Crestwood, with Blackwall, gives two epic pieces of info - one in a conversation and one in a party banter

Temple of Mythal, if you intend to be friends with who lives there bring Solas and Dorian.

Second for Solas and temple of Mythal. I didn't bring him because I didn't want to have to worry about keeping him alive for the Samson fight (what can I say I must have built him poorly). I got back to skyhold and immediately regretted not bringing him.

I was surprised how little Blackwall had to said at Adamant, wish I had brought someone else instead.

Although I suppose it makes sense once you find out he isn't actually a Grey Warden.

Cassandra has a fair amount to say during the fade because of Justinia, I hear Cole & Solas also have some interesting dialogue in the fade - although I haven't taken either yet.
