I find this mainly due to the horrible tactical camera in terms of field of view and the camera angles. Think I'm going to restart as a mage it seems a bit easier to handle combat from a distance. When combat breaks out I have a hard time seeing what the hell is going on in melee and having to frequently pause.
Melee rogues are difficult to play as...

It gets easier, especially once you get your specialization.

I play a melee rogue and have a wonderful time. Best thing i have found is to jump to tac-cam, assign orders to everyone else and play the rogue in real time. Generally it goes something like;
Tac-cam; Tank pulls/taunts, KE drops barrier, Rift mage Veilstrikes,
Out of tac-cam; stealth the rogue and get into position. Normally behind an archer or a mage.
Tac-cam; Tank might get new orders, usually not. KE throws a Winters grasp on my rogues target, rift mage casts pull of the abyss
Out of tac-cam; BOOM, buhbye mage, rogue makes them explode for massive damage with the shatter before repositioning behind the next target.
Tac-cam; Rift mage casts winters grasp on the rogues next target, KE casts (the 1st tier AoE fire spell, name escapes me), Tank Might re-taunt, depending on mobs left.
Out of tac-cam; You guessed it, that next targets day gets REALLY bad. BOOM.
Pretty much repeat till all enemies are dead. I carry chain lightning for paralyse should the enemies be immune to frozen. It doesn't combo as well but hey, a disable is a disable.
If there's a big guy in armour, the rest of the group focus on him while the rogue does all the dirty tricks. When the armoured guy is at 50%, flask of fire and deathblow him to bits.
Pretty lethal so far. Rift mage also carries a second barrier for those 'oh crap!' moments.
Melee rogue is ALL about position and intent.
-edit- Should mention that i'm playing on hard, not nightmare ATM. Though with how i'm breezing through, i don't see that i'll need to adjust my tactics too much. Maybe just refine a touch more.

Which specialization did you choose?

Assassin. And I'm loving it.

I just find the tactical camera to be horrendous for melee unless your paused while utilizing it... real time tactical it's terrible.

No it's not. Don't just leave them there blindly trading blows. Use hit a run tactics. You are guaranteed to kill one enemy at the start of the fight if you build it right.

Assassin. And I'm loving it.
It does stupid damage.

I got used to my assassin, and like the others here I really came to love it. I admit that archer or mage makes things really easy as it auto targets and requires a lot less movement, but as I play them I miss assassin.

You ALWAYS have to actively control a melee rogue from DAO. The last thing to do is leave the melee rogue to do damage by it self. Even in DAO that leaves them to be killed quickly via being over run. The class works best when it has a distraction. If you want the rogue to play like a warrior pick a tempest specialization.

I like the DWR also. Usually that's my first playthrough as it was this time. I didn't have trouble even with the end. I also like it because it allows you to NOT have to bring a rogue with you...Sera is too strange for me, I don't find Varric that useful (except for smart-ass remarks in the party, which can be very hilarious), and I'm not sure about Cole as I haven't used him but he might be interesting. I am going to try THW next but then I will have to decide whether or not to bring a rogue for those doors that have locks. I can't remember if there are any essential ones in quests.
