Hi all,

Because of several things i wasn't able to start with DAI sooner, but now i am finally gonna play it. I now have checked out all classes, just to get a feel for them, but i simply cannot decide on what to choose. I want the combat to be the most fun. I probably don't wanna go for mage, cause i finished DAII with that and i definitely missed now being able to use any swords. So it's going to be between bow and arrow or dual daggers, or one or two handed sword.

What i like about the rogue is the dual daggers, those are some cool attacks. But they cannot wear medium or heavy armor right? That's a shame cause i do want to wear that. The warrior can, but i find their attacks a bit more boring than rogue. Do the warriors get some cool new moves and abilities later on?

First, uninstall Dragon Age: Inquisition.

Then, install Dragon Age: Origins.

After that, choose a mage class or a dual-weapon warrior.

Hi Moon - DW rogues are fun but probably one of the more complex options to play in the game due to positioning/aggro management.

That being said, I believe there is some late game material you can get that lets you wear any armor type regardless of class. Even if not, the rogue specific armor is some of the better looking stuff IMO and there's some crazy awesome daggers to be found :)

In regards to warriors, my big grump about them is their mobility - they are walking tanks and even a 2H DPS warrior with proper gear/skills can basically laugh and just keep going through stupid amounts of damage. Rogues are REALLY mobile (it's super fun) along with mages but they are made of paper and until you get certain masterwork material that lets you build up guard (think of it as extra health bars) you'll need to dance in and out of combat with stealth and re-position.

Hi there, rogues wear medium armour, but not heavy :)

I have a dual weild rogue which is fun.

But I tend to play the companions too for variety, I like to get to know their different attacks while my main's on auto.

I found rogue w bow, ie the female companion far more enjoyable than previous DA titles.

I was disappointed with 2 handed warrior and surprised that I enjoyed single handed and shield warrior more.

To complement Halloween Jack's comment about Sword & Board, this is probably the most enjoyable Sword/Board has been in the DA games. It's REALLY fun using them xD

Why would i do that? I played a good part of DAO a long time ago, i however was never able to truly get used to the combat system and had to put it away. That said, i don't know why you answered with this, but...ok.

Thanks for that. Really appreciate it. Hasn't yet made my decision any easier though, haha. Maybe i'll just pick one and just play a good part of it and see how i like it.

DW rogues every time for me. I just the class and if you ply them right they are massive damage dealers.

Rogues wear medium/leather armor.    My main character is a dual wield rogue, and though she started off feeling underpowered and slow, as the game progressed she got stronger.   I can't say that she has been my favorite dual wield to ever play, but she is still very fun.  Bow Rogue seems very fun also.  I have a mage and a bow waiting in the wings for next playthroughs.  =)

Mage was probably the most pleasant surprise for me. I'm generally not a mage player but man, between Fade Step (and it's passive) and many of the spells in ALL trees along with the specs, I'm having way too much fun with my first playthrough. Still going to dive right into my DW and Archer rogues after though as that's my first main love in the DA world.

Board? I assume you mean shield?

My current character is a one handed warrior dwarf, so let's see how i'll like it. They get that dodge/sidestep move later on, right?

I think you mean shield with board? :)

I do - the term Sword and Board is just a funny thing some people use to describe Sword/Shield warriors :)

Aaaah i see, alright good to know :)

So i am now using the shield and sword, but i wonder , can i do something with the shield? Like bash enemies or block? So far i only press RT to attack with sword, nothing for shield yet.

You do unlock some shield-centric attacks and even get to have a skill that toggles you raising your shield and advancing slowly to block attacks. Also another one that has you raise your shield and RUSH through enemies :D

Sorry, I was just kidding ;)

I haven't tried all classes, but I'm at level 11 as a mage right now and I can tell you mages are pretty boring and limited. For what I've seen with companions, you should pick archers for the usual "crystal cannon" role. Shield/Sword warriors fill the tank gap pretty nicely. Apart from those two, all the other classes seem a bit boring or directly terrible, like the aforementioned mage (now restricted to very dull magic schools and "crowd control" tasks, but since you don't want to play as a mage again, is not a big deal).

So, I would say Shield/Sword is probably the thing you are looking for; it gives some feeling of prowess and very decent skill trees. I wouldn't recommend you the archer since it seems to be like the old mages from DA:O and DA2.

It's all good :)

Ok good to know. So definitely not mage. It's a bummer they turned out that way, cause in one of the gameplay videos from BioWare it looked rather cool. Yeah i;m gonna stick with my One handed warrior Dwarf. :D

It depends on what you like really.

I'm a huge fan of healing and tanking. Since the former is notably absent I'm playing a sword 'n' board warrior. It's amazingly fun and satisfying.

You look like you enjoy DPS, so you should go for DW rogues if you play on lower difficulties (unless you enjoy positioning challenge like me)

or Mage.

Salaya - how are you speccing your mage? Mine is a Rift/Fire/Lightning combo right now and it's anything but boring. Especially with Fade Step >.>

A good example of some of the crazy fun is opening up with a Veilstrike/Chain Lightning attack to disrupt/knock down and then I fade step in to do damage or close the distance before I start chaining in some heavy damage via stonefist/immolate//energy barrage to single targets or if I need to control a large group, pull of the abyss while dropping big AoE damage under the clustered group from myself and Dorian's Walking Bomb.

Far cry from boring personally and the spell effects/animations are just top notch :D

I'm doing Archer Rogue but sometimes I re-spec for dual daggers when I feel like it. The daggers you get will be a lot higher in damage than even swords you will see in the first half of the game. You have to rely on flanking damage though and as others have said, you have to dance around and do some work.

Next play-through because its easier. :P

Of course, it's something very personal. Right now I'm specializing in ice magic, along with some spirit spells. At first I was going for fire magic, but the lack of a fireball or something similar turned me to the apparently powerful "blizzard" spell (I'm guessing here, I play the spanish version and I'm not sure if the spell is called this way in english).

My problem is the feeling that I'm constantly blocking enemies in different ways, letting others doing the dirty work. I don't have spells that feel powerful at all, and I barely do as much damage as old mages did.

It also puzzles me the new school division, I don't understand why they have done this, and the general idea of the new mage feels awkward to me. I always play as mage in RPGs and Inquisition is positioning more and more in the bad ones, sadly. I've to reach the new spell trees, anyway. I hope the specializations make me feel different, really!

I'm surprised no one has recommended a knight enchanter mage yet - I'm a level 19 one at the moment and it's crazy fun. You can get up close in melee with spirit blade or be ranged, as you prefer (or the situation demands). Your passives mean your barrier never drops, provided you keep attacking, and you can even craft armour to build guard (using Silverite to craft armour removes the class restrictions, so you can wear medium/heavy armor if you prefer). You have fade step to get out of (or into! ;)) situations quickly, and you can choose from the other trees as you fancy - there are barrier upgrades in spirit and armour passives in winter that make you even more indestructible. It's so flexible as to your preferred style of gameplay - I'm having so much fun with it. :)

I didn't recommend it as like me and Salaya's discussion, personal preference and I found KE so boring >_< It's a great concept and that spirit blade is fun as heck but beyond that, there's really nothing but passives and defensive spells in that tree.

It speeds up later. My higher-level party will kill 7 badguys in 5 seconds, but it's also possible to lose Solas or Sera in 3 seconds due to a stealthed rogue we didn't see.

Now that i read those examples of how a mage can be, damn...that sounds great too. But for i am sticking with the warrior. I was hoping the dodge roll would simple be a move, just like the normal attack, but i now see in the abilities--> battlemaster menu that the dodge roll is located there. So it's not something i can always do during combat. Too bad :(

Yeah, you'll find probably the most annoying part of being a warrior is...the mobility. You have several options to fix this, but none of them will compare to a rogue's ability to zip around the field or the mage's redonkulously cool fade step.

You have combat roll and a couple of the warrior tanking moves that involving charging get you to a location faster (and if I recall correctly, you can steer Bull Rush)

Sounds good. The great thing about all this is...if after several hours i just don't dig the warrrior as much as i hoped, i can always respec and go for a rogue or mage, right?
