So if I plug in a controller and start using it instead of my K/M, does the game henceforth ignore all keyboard input?  (I've never used a controller on a PC before, hence my ignorance about this.)

I ask because I have read here on the forums that there is no way to quicksave via a controller, so I was just wondering if I still reached over and pressed F5, would the game still process it even though I switched over to controller input.  I doubt it,but I just thought i'd ask anyway.

No, controller ignores all keyboard input (apart from Printscreen for screenshots) and vice versa.

You could use xpadder to configure your controller using keyboard controls if you really wanted both, but you'd lose analog movement.

The couple of button presses that it takes to open/close the save screen is quick enough for me that I don't mind.

Okay, that's what I thought,  Thanks!

I think I'll just stick with K/M for this game.  I mainly bought the XBox controller for Assassin's Creed anyway. B)

Unfortunately, yes. The only use for the keyboard is typing names for your custom crafted gear and  making screens.

I've heard from some console-users that actually left+right D-pad buttons are supposed to have quick shortcuts, but they don't on PC.

I wish they gave us f5+f9.

Still, saving with two clicks is not that bad. DAI feels good with the pad, actually.

Well, oddly, the fighting still seems kind of clunky with the K/M, so I might give my controller a whirl.  I agree that saving one's game the normal way is not that big of a deal; I'm just still relunctant to switch to a controller to be honest.  As someone else once said in some other thread, I have decades of K/M muscle memory to unlearn and controller muscle memory to relearn. :P

Actually it's not that hard as it sounds. Me myself had been playing 100% K+M all my gaming life (which is about ~20 years, I assume). Xbox360 pad turned out to be much more comfortable than I had supposed. I had my first experience in May, and by now i've played several games 100% with a controller (including Jade Empire and even Bioshock:infinite). DAI felt good. Menus are still somewhat clunky, but that point is not any better on KM.

Xbox controllers have always given me terrible hand cramps. PS controllers, traditionally smaller, have bothered me less. I like to balance a controller on my fingers, rather than wrap my hands around them.

But modern controllers have too many buttons on the undersidefor that to work, so I completely gave up using controllers about 5 years ago.

I've always preferred the keyboard, anyway. I remember not liking having to adapt when the mouse came along.

I exclusively play on PC, and had bought a controller for Dark Souls, but rarely used it.  It's tragic, but I simply can't play DA:I with the KB&M controls.  I got killed by the intro boss a few times, then switched to controller and never looked back.  It seems kind of blasphemous to admit that I prefer it, but the KB&M controls for this game are just too terrible.

*Shrug* Use a wireless Xbox controller myself for any games that support it. Much easier to pick up the controller, throw the Lazy-Boy in recline mode and go to town. :D

Though I don't use it much and takes me awhile to get used to the controls on them (usually halfway through a game before I'm used to the controls, and even then I'm sometimes opening the inventory instead of casting a spell or wacking an orc.

Yeah, but see?  That's the other thing.  I'm not in my living room playing this on my TV; I'm sitting in an office chair in front of my PC. :P

Anyway, my game plan now is to finish my first run-through using my K/M.  On my second run-through, I'll switch over to my controller and give it a whirl.
