Does anyone know what Level all of the High Dragons are in order? Would save me getting my ass handed to me. (Stumbled upon the Storm Coast one at level 14 (The Dragon is 20).

Thanks!

I've even heard conflicting reports of their levels xD

You just noted the Vinsomer (Storm Coast) is 20. In my game, she showed as 19. Abyssal High Dragon (Western Approach) was 14. Ferelden Frostback (Hinterlands) was 12. Northern Hunter in Crestwood was 13. Greater Mistral in Emerald Graves for me was 19.

The wiki doesn't appear to have an updated/handy list just yet :\

This article is pretty handy and tells you what their levels are and what you have to do.

http://www.infobarre...ow_to_Kill_Them

As an aside, with the normal fire/ ice dragons, I find that going under the dragon and stabbing its legs (with a melee character obv) helps a LOT because its hard for the dragon to breath fire and ice on you, or lash you with its tail, or bite you. You just have to keep moving with it, and dodge those fire or ice balls it hurls when it takes flight.

I don't think this will work with the electric damage dragons though.

You can also get your shield warrior to use Shield Wall and completely deflect the elemental ball, and watch it go flying off. Its awesome xD

@StrangeStrategy - didn't know about that!

@ShadowWeaver - thanks for the link :D

I recently discovered that when the dragon is doing that super painful wing pull move if you rush under them it doesn't do any damage. HOORAY! Now if my companion AI wouldn't try to run away again while it's still channeling <.<

You can also avoid being pulled in and damaged if you position yourself behind an obstacle like a wall or large rock. Works especially well with the crestwood dragon - there are a lot of low walls on the battlefield that you can hide your ranged characters behind and still have them attack the dragon. The tricky part is making sure the AI doesn't move them back into open ground (the AI really doesn't like ranged characters attacking from behind a wall, even if their attacks are not obstructed).

It was for me. I'm pretty sure those levels scale some bit with your own when you first encounter them and I met the Frostback pretty early but ran to fight later when I was ready. Afaik I first met the Frostback when I was level 9. Killed it when I was level 14.

The one at the Storm Coast is definately the toughest I've come across.  Killed the one in the Emerald Graves first, stumbled on it and said what the hell.  I was around level 13 or 14.  The ones in the Hinterlands and Fields are little tougher.

The Dragons owned my face for a long time. Then Sera got a unique bow that fires 3 shots at once. Then she got lightning flask.

Now dragons run from Sera.

The ones in Empress are in the 20s to 23. Hissing wastes is about the same.

It seems dragon levels can change because the Hinterlands was lvl 10 on my first playthrough and lvl 12 on my second. Also the levels for most of my dragons were different than the ones posted in the link above.

It seems that dragons levels are not set in stone and can change a few levels depending on your own level. The only approximation you can get is the minimum level you need to be to actually have a fair chance at killing them. Here it is from Prima guide:

1. Hinterlands - Fereldan Frostback. Recommended level: 12+.

2. Crestwood - The Northern Hunter. Recommended level: 13+.

3. Exalted Plains - Gamordan Stormrider. Recommended level: 13+.

4. Western Approach - Abyssal High Dragon. Recommended level: 14+.

5. Storm Coast (island) - The Vinsomer. Recommended level: 15+.

6. Emerald Graves - The Greater Mistral. Recommended level: 17+.

7. Hissing Wastes - Sandy Howler. Recommended level: 20+.

8, 9, 10. Emprise du Lion:

- Hivernal. Recommended level: 19+,

- Kaltenzahn. Recommended level: 21+,

- Highland Ravager. Recommended level: 22+.

I tend to complete my walkthroughs of these locations based on dragon level, because items they drop have a fixed level. So it's more beneficial to complete locations and kill dragons in this order. The only thing I do differently is I go first to Emprise du Lion and then to Hissing Wastes. The highest level of dragons I've seen was level 24.

I'm working on the quest to find the one in the Western Approach, but I guess I should also try and find the one in Crestwood too.  If I can take down one in Emprise, then that one shouldn't be much of a problem.  I've killed four and found another so far.

I had no idea there were three dragons in the emprise.

You have to open up the sub-area before you can get to it.

I had built the bridge . . . found one there and saw another flying. Figured those were the only two. I've only ever actually fought one there, though. That's pretty cool.

The guy (the one in charge) at the keep gives you the quest to kill the three after it's liberated for the Inquisition.

I must have missed that.  I opened the bridge, walked across, explored the ruins and found one.

Yeah, same here. Don't think I ever talked to that guy more than once.

Knight Enchanter's Spirit Blade will also deflect dragon fireballs and ice balls.  Just worth noting, since it saved me some headache on the Greater Mistral last night.

Something else to consider with the dragon levels.  After a lengthy quest, on and off, to find the dragon in the Western Aproach, I finally killed it.  And got zero XP  :o !  Next time, I'll definately taking it on earlier in the game.  Was getting about 1500 XP for other dragons.

The Crestwood Dragon is the easiest one to kill in my opinion.  Very low level, and unlike the Hinterlands Dragon, doesn't summon adds.  You just have to learn the lightening Dragon attack mechanics.  So if you've killed any other high Dragon at all, you can handle Crestwood's.

Easily the hardest thing about the dragon fights (or any fight really) is the retarded companion AI.

I was gleefully hacking away at the Abyssal High Dragon for some time when I started missing Cassandra. When I paused I saw here just standing somewhere off with her back towards the dragon. Ordered her to attack, resumed the fight, still missed her, paused again and that wench was still standing there. Ordered her to attack again, unpaused and rotated my camera to watch her ... and she just kept standing there like some statue.

I also love how every little tick of damage seems to be cancelling orders. Vivienne got hit by a fireball, so I ordered her to move, which she turned around to do until half a second later she got hit by the DoT from standing in the fire left from the fireball. And instead of continuing to follow her order to get out of the bloody flames, she just turned and went to auto attack the dragon, all the while gleefully accumulating DoT from standing in a pyre and chugging all the health potions. And Here I wondered how those were depleting so fast during some fights.

Large fights like those with dragons aren't boss fights, it's babysitting!

I've lost every motivation to go hunting these dragons. Having to deal with both a dragon and companion idiocy is hazardous for my forehead. Companion AI really needs a patch to make them less retarded. I'm sure every little tick of damage resetting orders is not intentional.
