I just decided to start a mage playthrough for the first time (I've never played a mage before either, not even in DAII or DA:O. Dual-blade rogues ftw) and it just hit me that since I play with a gamepad I will only have access to a limited set of active skills. Do people have any recommendations on what active skills to use? I will be playing on normal so I don't need intense min/maxing options, but I would greatly appreciate a general idea of what other players have tried and what has or hasn't worked for them.

I would also like to know what choices people make in party selection. I was thinking about going two mages, 1 tank warrior, and a dps rogue, though I'm not sure which rogue I should pick from Cole, Sera, or Varric.

Lastly, I would like to know people's approach on specialization. I think I'm leaning towards Knight Enchanter given that it seems to be a popular option among everyone, but I'm also considering rift mage. Not really into necromancy but I'd be up for reading people's attitudes about it.

I would really appreciate any and all feedback!

Doesn't matter if you play with a game pad or not even on PC you're limited to 8 skills. I'm playing a Rift Mage right now and loving it (NM, level 20). Rest of my party is Cass, Sera and Dorian. Rift and Necro have some nice interactions because Rift can sleep whole groups so easily. My typical setup is Energy Barrage, Pull of the Abyss, Static Cage, Inmolate, Dispel, Stonefist and Fade Walk. That eats groups of mobs up and spits them out. Going against a dragon I'll switch it up based on its weaknesses and probably toss in Barrier.

The key with Rift Mage is the ridiculous mana regen that comes from damaging weakened enemies. Add in Flashpoint passive with high crit chance and you are a spell slinging machine. And those spells setup tons of detonators through paralysis and sleep.

I play as a Knight Enchanter Mage (currently lvl 17) and have Spirit Blade, Immolate, Chain Lightning, Winter's Grasp, Barrier, Fade Step, Resurgence and Mark of the Rift mapped to the controller, on Xbox 360.  I use a ring that boosts Immolate by 30% and another that boosts Chain Lightning by 30%, for my PC.  I usually go with 2 mages (myself and either Dorian or Vivienne), 1 Warrior (usually Cassandra, sometimes Iron Bull) and 1 Rogue (usually Sera - specd for dual daggers or sometimes Varric if I need a ranged Rogue).  I haven't used Cole yet, but might give him a try since Assassin is a pretty powerful Specialization for a dual daggers Rogue.  As KE, I like being able to play as an (almost) off-tank in certain situations.  KE is arguably OP (has already received 2 nerfs), but then again so are other specializations.  If you choose to play KE, you really need to take abilities that boost your barrier / add to barrier regeneration.  Things like the following:  Spirit Tree = Barrier (VERY IMPORTANT), Guardian Spirit, Rejuvenating Barrier, Strength of Spirits and Knight Enchanter Tree = Fade Shield (VERY IMPORTANT) and Knight Protector.  Without at least some of those, you won't be able to survive for very long.

I have decent equipment, but nothing too spectacular at this point.  The best piece of equipment I have is the pre-order DLC Light Dragon armor (Mastercraft) - armor 149 that I crafted at Skyhold.  I simply haven't found enough high tier ingredients or schematics, as of yet, to do much crafting.  That being said, I play the game on normal and managed to basically solo-kill the Dragon on the Storm Coast, without having any healing potions available for my PC to use during the encounter.  It took about 20 minutes (I was level 16, Dragon was level 19), since the rest of my party died and had used all but 1 healing potion.  I had used that potion after almost dying, as part of the Red Templars on the Coast quest, prior to traveling to Dragon Island.

I'll give you a few basic ideas of what you can level up. Firstly if you want damage, the fire tree will provide that in spades. Immolate is a low cost AoE fire spell that basically destroys anything in its path, especially if you're playing on normal. I'd advise upgrading it as soon as possible. After you get that I'd highly suggest getting level 2 Fade Step. Mainly because that skill has 3 major advantages, 1. it gets you out of trouble, 2. Leveling it up gives you a free ice damage spell and finally 3. If you go Knight Enchanter it will become your most used skill because you'll be using it to close the gap between you and your enemies. After you have those two skills upgraded you can get Chain Lighting, this way you'll have all 3 elements at your disposal so you'll always be ready no matter what type of enemy you're fighting. I didn't mention Barrier because that should be extremely obvious.

The last piece of advice I can give you is to make your Staff lighting damage because there are no enemies that resist lighting early on in the game. If you pick fire you won't be able to cheap away fire mages, and if you pick ice you wont be able to cheap away ice mages. Lighting damage is the middle ground early on. It isn't a big deal but it's something you should know. If you go Knight Enchanter and you need help with that let me know, I'll be happy to help.

P.S For your party, go with whoever you like best. Mix and match until you find what you like.

Rift mage seems like a really cool DPS option, but since Solas will be my 2nd mage I don't want to have two mages specced in the same area. Probably gonna go with Knight Enchanter and see where that gets me.

Also, it didn't occur to me that I could have Sera in my party as a dual-wield rogue. I think I'm gonna go for that option given that I'm already too familiarized with the assassin spec Cole uses. I want to try new things this time around.

Oh and thanks for the spell recommendations, too. I've been overwhelmed by the amount of choices I have as a mage (rogues are more straightforward) and wasn't sure what to pick out.

Thanks for the responses guys!

Rift mage, level 15 right now. Upgraded pull of the abyss + upgraded fire mine rocks, I'm having a blast with it after spending ~70 hours as a DW rogue in my previous life.
