I'm sorry but I have to vent: this is the worst level of any game I have every played, and that includes every Water level of any game past.

Dragon Age was built on the premise of CHOICE as in most RPGs

This "Quest" pigeon holes you into certain actions and does not allow you to play or act in a instinctual way.  You are forced to gain the courts approval by making certain choices that are pre determined.  Is this Zork from 1987??

My game so far was based on a Inquisitor that did the right thing without the need of approval of others.  Going into this quest I was forced to make certain decisions because if the court's approval went too low for too long the game ended.  Really?  REALLY?  There is no timer an no indication this is necessary to keep the quest going.  This is horrible planning and design.  There should really be a patch that allows the character to continue with the quest without needing a certain amount of approval as opposed to the game automatically ending.

It's Orlais, and it's called playing the Game. I very much enjoyed this feature, because unlike everyone automatically bowing to/ getting subdued by the Inquisitor, you actually had to watch your mouth. It's a pity you don't see this aspect of the game for what it is, op, namely a possibility for the player to test their diplomatic skills, no matter how poorly believe it was implemented.

And tbf, you REALLY have to screw it up and very un-diplomatically shove your opinion down everyone's throat to even come close to failing this mission. >.>

I disliked this quest as well. Very tedious searching for stinking halla statues, and trying to get your court approval up and keep it up.

I would prefer if you could Rand Al'Thor it (stubbornly be yourself in the face of a bunch of scheming nobles) and just have it spawn consequences later. I mean, who's really going to kick the most powerful important person in the world at that moment from their party cause they said something uncouth? Who's gonna make me leave when I can kill dragons? No, this was poorly implemented. If you make mistakes with certain nobles it should spawn later assassination attempts or certain war table missions to deal with the after math. Getting kicked out of a party is pretty much the dumbest end game I've ever seen.

This was one of the few sequences that I actually really enjoyed. Not so much the collecting coins or halla statues parts, but the talking to people (and people of interest, too!), having to watch what I say, getting to do some role-playing. How refreshing to be involved in something meaningfully interactive after all that lifelessness and everybody being like drones in those big maps that make up, what, 80% of the game? The introduction of Morrigan and that sweet dance with my LI at the end (I was starved of those, too) were just the cherries on top.

Not to mention, on a shallow note, that I had always thought my PC looked a bit meh up until that quest when seeing the Inquisitor in that formal attire changed my mind. How those deep, dark, rich colours contrasted against the fairness, the translucent quality of the skin...ahh...just wow.

I hate this mission as well.  I think the setting was intriguing but the court favor/countdown timer mechanic completely ****** ruined it.  One of the great things about RPGs is exploration.  The timer discourages that, big time.

Not so much that it's tedious, but the fact that you are on a timer (you can see court approval ticking down at all times, so not sure what OP is talking about) which essentially requires you to search the place, memorize all spots and then go back and pick them all up with the benefit of foreknowledge.

In addition, deciding where to use the halla statues also requires foreknowledge of what's behind the doors.

Wicked minds/hearts is the top notch quest I've ever seen in my life. And is so different from the rest of the atrocious and decadent MMOlike grinder.

- Rich story

- Heavy C&C

- Not a single instance of endless trashmob respawns

- Unfriendly to junk looters

- Vala Mal Doran finally shows her face after so many annoying trashmobs that can't die for good in Hinterlands!!!

Don't think you actually read the post.  The problem I had was the timer and again the lack of CHOICE.  "Watching your mouth" to placate the nobles was never the issue, it was that you could ONLY choose that path in order to complete it.  There was no choice to do otherwise and to see the consequences of your actions, the very definition of what Bioware constantly claims their games are geared around including Dragon Age

By giving you at timer you are not aware of until it is too late promotes speeding through certain areas of exploration which was the biggest idea they pushed when developing this game.

How about this for Orlais and the Palace and the whole stupid quest:

I have the power to close rifts. Nobody else has that power. If you don't want demons spewing out of rifts that I conveniently neglect in your territory because I am from ferelden and really could care less about your games, then I suggest you all approve of me very highly because not doing so? Not so good for your fate with demons. I have to prioritize who I help and where I go. I can move you up or down the list. Which would you prefer? That's how I play your game. Feel like calling my bluff? Didn't think so. I win.

I did not side with the Templars, I have yet to even finish the quest as of today because I keep running out of time on a timer I cannot see unfortunately.  Next time I will just flip 100 coins into the pond and hope for the best

Really

Seriously I managed 100 approval at the end and I didn't find all the coins (I found like 5 or something)  Although I did find most of the secrets (28 I think) and turned them in.  Tip, you can actually get over 100% it just doesn't show up on the timer thingy.  Which means I did the entire royal apartments without it going down past 100.  I also took my time and explored all the areas (No joke)

Also you don't need high court approval to finish the mission you just need at least 1.

You only can put two coins in the pond.

To boost approval talk to the guy near the journalist lady (he should be in that area somewhere) and tell him the guy he mentions (son or relative I think) is a jerk. I think that is 10 or 5 approval.

Before entering to right to the fountain and search - retrieve the ring and give it to the woman nearby with the talking bubble over her head. I think it's 5 or 10. Can't remember.

For the dance responses are:

May I help you?

Let's dance

Why don't you educate me?

Is that what we both want?

Which am I to you?

Who do you trust?

Isn't everyone?

As you do the dialogue think of it as manipulating her since she's manipulating you. A question with a question so you are evasive. If you are RPing a very straightforward character as I was in one run I never finished, just think of it as dealing with an enemy. You don't trust her. You don't know her so you cannot be straightforward with her until you know her more. It's not as if she is willing to fight by your side in battle. You're sizing her up and she best respond well. She is not getting the chance to size you up because she isn't worthy.

Meh I thought it was alright. I LOVED the look of it, and the fact that it was something different to just walking up to a baddie and slaughtering him/her/it but...

I found it a bit confusing, to be honest, and with the timer thing my confusion turned into irritation. I remember thinking I'd have to start from scratch because I didn't get the halla statue from the beginning (that entrance courtyard thing that you can't actually go back out into)... Oh and of course toward the end I did have to load an earlier save because Dorian as a necromancer glitched the whole game and prevented me from progressing.

I really did like the fact that it was something different to just straight forward combat. I would like to see these types of levels in the future, maybe re-imagined a bit.

I liked this quest except for the stupid timer, and the fact that you have to go back through the areas repeatedly in order to get all the things.

But the intrigue and the Empress and the appears of the court was amazing.

I also didn't like the female dress uniform.  Seemed like having a gown (or choosing your appearance) should have affected your approval too.

OP:  The Court Approval timer should be on the top right of your screen.  Is it missing?

Ah, how do I miss Alpha Protocol's timer on dialogue wheel choices (if it timed out, it would either pick a random option or one you were hovering over, some dialogues had unique responses for when it timed out, usually bad for you, but not always).

Can't imagine why anyone would do anything but bend over backwards to please a person with this sort of attitude.

I liked it but I found myself scratching my head and quietly laughing at some of the halla statues disgarded on the floor. If they are important keys, you would think they would store them somewhere safe

oh no wait,

you would need MORE halla statues to access halla statues :/

Personally i had no issue with court approval, going to an Orlais ball and not having to play the game would be ridiculous imo.

My only issue with this mission is that given the crucialness of the evidence on (briala/Celene/Gaspard) in end choice there's no direction given to the player and Celene's is hidden behind a halla door. First time round my inquisitor supported Gaspard but managed to miss the room where evidence on Celene was and therefore was presented with no choice to support him or lie about having found evidence incriminating him.

BioWare masterfully brought to life the lore of Thedas into that quest.  As already mentioned, it's Orlais and everyone is apart of the game, wether they choose to or not.

Alot of BioWare's past titles have had scenario's like this, where you're thrown into the heart of a race, civilization or certain organization's institute and have to play along and go with the flow(ie:disguising as Drow in one of their cities in Underdark, the Sith Academy on Korriban in KOTOR, Kasumi's companion mission in ME2).  Love doing these, it's a nice change and break from the usual.

Mmmmmm, let's see....RPG, choice...consequence...These are the things we love, right?

So, in this quest, we have an objective (just like in real life, you have to achieve something and in order to do so, you have to get certain things right). OK.

The objective (among other things) is to gain court approval. To me this seems like a very logical objective.

What happens in real life when you go for a job interview? Your objective is to gain approval, right? And what happens if you fail? You don't get the job!

Now, in this quest, you have a very similar situation, but the consequence of failure is much more severe. But you still have the choice, don't you? Of course you do! Succeed, and you go to the next stage. Fail, and it is game over for you.

Curiously, you (OP) seem to think otherwise. You seem to think you can walk into the interview and manipulate the situation to YOUR liking, completely ignoring the fact that you have to gain someone else's approval for that job.

I don't know what world you live in, I really don't.

You know what I think? I think you're TROLLING!

(butt-hurt that you failed and then blaming the game for it LOL)
