I gotta say the main point I think is missed here is that there is no CHOICE.  If you don't gain the courts approval the game ends, I really find it hard to believe that was one of the larger ending scenarios people are talking about on other forums.  You don't have a choice on this mission, either you gain the approval of the court or the game ends.  IF I don't gain the approval of the mages, the game continues.  If I don't gain the approval of Iron Bull (or any companion) and he leaves the Inquisition, the game continues.  Bethesda has done this right for years now, I am surprised that Bioware (after publicly stating the large amount that Skyrim inspired this game) would put that in.  The espionage, the intrigue, the idea of a ball and finding a killer of the empress is a great idea, it was the execution that I thought was completely flawed.

There is a choice, you can choose to play their stupid game and get the manpower needed to beat Corypheus, or you can choose to do it your own way and not be able to win (thus the gameover). You need the orlesian army in order to get to the temple since I doubt they want you marching a foreign army through their country. Why would they want to help someone who turns up to their ball and is rude to everyone? At least bioware is nice enough to give you an instant gameover rather than letting you continue to play an unwinnable game like those old adventure games used to do.

I wanted the option to ignore the court, or better yet, butcher every last one of them. Wouldn't have minded setting up my own puppet as the Orlesian ruler as well, since I hate all the leaders.

Not so much that it's tedious, but the fact that you are on a timer (you can see court approval ticking down at all times, so not sure what OP is talking about) which essentially requires you to search the place, memorize all spots and then go back and pick them all up with the benefit of foreknowledge.

In addition, deciding where to use the halla statues also requires foreknowledge of what's behind the doors.

I agree, I think. I've only played this quest once and my impression was that replayability is a big feature here. I'm sure I didn't do half of the side activities available while I was trying to prevent an assassination.
