Hi everyone.  I was inspired by Teddie Sage's polls recently.

You can see by looking at the results of his poll that the most popular first gender and race combination was human female, followed by human male and elf female with female dwarf being far in last place (with only 2% of the vote).

But it got me thinking:  This only accounts for my first Inquisitor.  And another thing that wasn't accounted for in this poll was the combination of race, gender, and class.

So I thought it would be interesting to see how (if at all) different the results would be if we include race, gender, and class all into one poll that accounted for all of your inquisitors (that you've done or that you plan to do).  Would human females still be most popular?  Are there some class, race, gender, combinations that don't get played much?  This poll will allow you to select multiple options too.

The poll is here:  http://strawpoll.me/3196612

And if you missed it, here is the link to Teddie Sage's thread about your first Inquisitor (http://forum.bioware...hs-race-gender/).

Updated results for this poll (with 1097 votes):

1. female human mage                 138 votes (13%)
2. male human warrior                   98 votes (9%)
3. male human mage                     97 votes (9%)
4. female human warrior                97 votes (9%)

8. female qunari mage                  42 votes (4%)
9. female dwarf rogue                  42 votes (4%)
10. female elf rogue                     38 votes (3%)
11. male elf mage                         32 votes (3%)
12. male dwarf warrior                  30 votes (3%)
13. male elf rogue                        29 votes (3%)

I'm male human mage but I'm planning to/not opposed to other combinations like female qunari rogue or male dwarf warrior.

That was what I was hoping to see represented in this poll.  The other ones like it just capture the first playthrough combination.  I'm interested in seeing what the results are for the other characters as well.

So I updated the results for this poll and put them in the OP.  There are now 240 votes.

I actually tried something new and posted the link on several other DA: I message boards (on gamefaqs) in order to get a more diverse response.   People often say that the BSN is not representational, so I thought I'd expand it beyond just here.  Got about 40 new votes and there's not really anything different than what was being posted by BSNers.  I was expecting human male warrior to skyrocket, but not really.  Interesting.  Female human mage is still #1 by a good margin.

According to this most of us plays humans. Makes me wonder if having other races is worth it tbh. I played one of every race but I'm just putting that out there.

I've only played as human or elf in DA:O and DA:I. But I don't think Bioware should remove the other races. It works just fine and there are people out there who enjoy playing other races.

I think it's worth it (I'm biased because I never play human if given an option), because the non-human players are very devoted to their races.  Elf-players and dwarf-players, specifically.  We might not be the majority, but we are really appreciative of the option.  And I'm pretty sure that the devs know that and appreciate it back.

Also, only about 53% of the playthroughs are human.  I think most people play humans on their first playthrough (the results of those polls show that the number is usually in the mid-high 60% range), but it seems like the number drops down for subsequent playthroughs.

47% of the playthroughs being non-human is pretty significant, I think.

Around 80% of DAO characters were human, about 15% were elves, and just 5% were dwarves. I'm expecting Inquisition will run about 80% human again, with elves, qunari and dwarves dividing up the other 20% between them. Dwarves may well go even lower than 5% with qunari on the table.

This probably has a lot to do with why there was no race selection in DA2. I won't be surprised if we see another human-only game in future, but I think BioWare know that the people who value this choice tend to value it A LOT.

Edit:  'ed! Partially.

I think (and it's not just based on these poll results) that the dwarf numbers will stay consistent at around 5-10% range.  Dwarf fans are pretty damned loyal.  I'll play qunari, but I'm still doing dwarf runs.  Nothing will change that for me.  I think qunari will be the same 5-10% range.  I actually think they will pull from the human numbers a bit.  And I think the strong elf-connected story will see a slight increase in elf numbers as well.  That will also come out of the human numbers, I think.

I wonder just how biased this sample is. Having a majority of players play female Inquisitors seems odd.

As for the races: I highly appreciate the race choice, even though my "personal canon" characters tend to be human. The variety has added greatly to DAO, and it adds even more to DAI as the game is more responsive to your race choice. I have played two races and plan to the remaining ones as well.

I agree with that all races should be playable I'm just asking for what is more desirable: making the masses happy with more story but only human as a protag, or making those of us who'd rather plat elf or dwarf etc happy. I would like more story and still have all the races but I realise that it takes more resources than having only human and more story (DA:2)

I'm sure that there's some bias. There is in every poll. There's always the possibility that the type of people who answer these polls are more inclined to answer in a specific way. I tried to eliminate the BSN bias by also posting it on all five DA: I boards on gameFAQs too.

I think the results are interesting. Humans are clearly still the most popular race but not by the margin one would expect after 300 votes. And it's clear that female mages (all three races) are fairly popular as well.

People often pick human first and non-humans later on if they want/have the time.

I think that aside from the male elf skeleton messup (PATCH THIS BIOWARE), elves are VERY well represented in DAI and I'm happy for those who love that race.

Dwarves are my least favorite race of the 4 (though I am most hostile to the Qun itself out of any major philosophy in Thedas..), but I still do hope that DA4 brings them a lot of emphasis. Humans can get their Tevinter. Qunari can have their Seheron. Elves can get their Arlathan. But Dwarves should get a super intense Deep Roads + Kal Sharok epicness that surpasses anything dwarven before and integrates with the main storyline like elven stuff does in DAI.

Lets get that 5-10% up to at least 15-20% :). Might encourage me to even make a dwarven alt for a DA4...

I'm talking totally hypothetically in this post, of course.

I also wanted to say that its so cool that classes are so equal in this game. People like to play all 3 of them. Though specializations are probably heavily weighted (hi Knight Enchanter..). I hope Bioware can get the next Mass Effect to be more equal like DA does. If they stick to the 6 overall class types, I'd like Soldier rather lower and ones like Engineer (etc) to be higher..

Updated results with over 550 votes (very interesting stuff):

Female - 56.5%

Male - 43.5%

Human - 50.5%

Elf - 20.7%

Qunari - 16.6%

Dwarf - 12.6%

Mage - 38.7%

Rogue - 31.3%

Warrior - 30.0%

So a few thoughts (and I'm making huge assumptions, but it's just for fun, so I'm not worried about it):

* The poll is posted at 6 different gamer-focused DA: I boards, so it's not just BSN (although it's still probably pretty damned skewed).

* None of the combinations except for female human mage have over 10% of the vote.  That's really surprising to me.

* I think that the idea that 80% of the playthroughs are humans is a thing of the past.  Humans are definitely the most popular, but even with the casual fans being added in, I don't think it will get those numbers back up to the 80% mark that they had in DA: O.

* To a lesser extent, so is the "human male warriors are the most played" comment.  I'm sure that they are (once you factor in the people who don't visit message boards about games), but I don't think it's the overwhelming majority that people expect.

* There seems to be 'tiers' in popularity:

Tier One - female human mage

Tier Two - male human mage, male human warrior, female human rogue, female elf mage

Tier Three - male human rogue

Tier Four - everything else (with female qunari mage and female dwarf rogue being on the popular end and elf warriors of both genders being on the unpopular end)

* Elf warriors seem to be the least race/class combination overall.  The only one that's really close is qunari rogues.  On the other end of the spectrum, human mages and human warriors are the most popular combinations (no surprise there).

I genuinely think that all of that stuff is true for the first playthrough, but I have a feeling that the majority of people who do a second (and more) playthrough switch up their combinations.  One downside to this poll is that people can't pick the same combination more than once.  So if I do three female dwarves and only one human male, they both count the same.  Not sure how to remedy that, though.

I'd love to see actual Bioware data on race, class, gender choice overall.  I'm sure they have it.  I feel like Dagna, geeking out over data!

I chose Female Human Mage as well.  I am a straight guy irl, I hate watching some guy run around and hearing them moan & grunt in the center of my screen for so many hours.   So I typically choose Female characters and make them romance other girls (or no one if another woman isn't an option).  If I find a romanceable female NPC very likeable, I will create a Male character for an additional playthrough in order to romance that character; to see how it plays out (ie Cassandra, I think she's pretty damn awesome after going through all of the scenes with her on my main character).   The Mage part... well this is one game where I actually prefer mages.  In fact the entire series of Dragon Age has the mage formula crafted nicely.  The Human part... well as someone else said.. I TYPICALLY like to start out my games that have multiple species to choose from as human.  Not always, but usually.

It doesn't hurt that humans get an extra skillpoint. Probably the best racial bonus
