Mages are garbage in this game. (poor damage/8 skill slots/change to willpower)

I regret picking a mage for my class seriously, they just suck, they dont do nearly half they damage they did in previous games and dosent compensate in defense either, the damage they do is pretty much crap and not only that enemies resistances are Over Powered leaving you useless in some fights with your "amazing auto attacks".

 

We all know knight enchanters are the way to go, BUT THAT IS SAD, because knight enchanter is more like a paladin not a mage and he can endure but dont do any damage, rift mage and necromancer dont have either damage or survivality, try to kill a dragon with those 2, you are just wasting a slot you could have use for a better class.

 

Most of the time i feel im just there to do some stupid "control" which is kind of useless since my tank is going to hold the aggro any way and autoattacking, if i would want to auto attack i would have picked a melee class yet they screwed up 2 systems that are hurting mages bassically, 3 with the damage reduction:

 

1- DAMAGE (already explained)

 

2- 8 SKILL SLOTS MAX - Are you kidding me?, how more dumbed down this franchise can be, seriously mages are all about having a LOT of ways to deal with enemies, with 8 slots only you just cant do it, you just cant play a mage properly, its DUMB, you will be stuck autoattacking when you dont have the mana or when your attacks are being resisted because you lack slots to put more elements in.

 

3- DUMBED DOWN WILLPOWER- So now will power bassically dosent affect mana in any way, gives damage too? WHY?, thats stupid and redundant, its useless, this just makes mages cast a spell and SIT TO DO AUTO-ATTACKS until the mana is filled to do something else, THIS IS NOT FUN, this is stupid, mages are supposed to be able to use spells and you cant do it if you dont have enough mana to do so, cast a spell WAIT, cast another spell, WAIT, WAIT, cast another spell, WAIT, WAIT, WAIT, WAAAAAAIIIIIT!!!.

 

 

Three idiotic changes that destroyed mages in this game.

And the fact that like many other RPGs the magic system was gutted. The lore of DA had always been there had been different schools of magic. The Specializations, shouldn't have been specializations of schools that had already existed as non specializations. Knight Enchanter stays as a Specialization. Rift Mage and Necromancy were once main schools and should have stayed main schools.

 

Instead we only have one support tree and three elements. Ooo, so much strategy involved in that.

are you sure we are playing the same game?

Solas as a rift mage is very very usefull with spells that weaken enemies. These are life savers for my rogue and tank.

Knight enchanter can solo dragons....
Necromancer has that awesome terror aoe spell which translates as "free damage for all"

Plus not all classes are usefull for all encounters. Have in mind that knight enchanter's blade totally obliterates guard...

You must be playing wrong, I had no problem doing damage as a mage. Craft better gear and l2p.

My mage could do fine damage even without spamming Spirit Blade(or other KE abilities) to win.

 

For a game that is apparently extremely dumbed down, I would have expected that you'd have figured out how.

why the offense man? Chill out.
Anyway: fire mines deal great damage. there are other skill ott. i do not use many aoe due to Friendly fire setting.

No class can output too much dmg by it's own i think (except assassin rogue)

Mages synergise well with rogues: use that winters grasp well for a combo.
Mages are great against barriers.  Mages are far from support class you claim they are.

Try taking Immolate (and its upgrade Wildfire), Pyromancer, Chaotic Focus, Clean Burn, and Fire Mine (and its upgrade Searing Glyph) from Inferno.  Take Barrier and at least Strength of Spirits (to increase barrier) from Spirit.  Cast Immolate or, better yet, Fire Mine and then tell me KE cannot deal damage.

Even Skyrim didn't butcher the magic that badly, and Bethesda stabbed Destruction fifty times in the back and left it bleeding in a ditch.

 

The eight slot limit combined with the extreme simplification (read: You get to be an elemental mage, or nada) of the system really is a downer. Knight-Enchanter's fun and all, but the only thing I really use there is Static Cage and go melee.

What would have been nice would be if focus abilities had their own slots rather than requiring an ability one.

Yeah Mark of Rift forgot several times or so that it was there and tried to activate my hook and chain only to be doing mark of rift skill

hell on xbox LB is pretty mutch unused.

You don't need healing potions? They could have used left + right trigger simultaneously for focus stuff...

 

EDIT: LT + A doesn't do anything either, does it (A w/o LT is blocked by jump of course)? - so that would have been 9 slots for regular powers + focus power.

Yes, and none of the Actives or Passives I mentioned was even under Knight Enchanter.  Granted, you would also want to take Spirit Blade (and its upgrade), Combat Clarity (for faster mana regen), Fade Shield (for barrier regen), and Knight-Protector (for barrier decay reduction).  You wouldn't even have to use Spirit Blade and you could still deal damage, especially if you combine KE passives with the Spirit and Inferno actives / passives I mentioned above.  So yes, KE can deal damage and is not just a melee class.

Or even pushing in on analog sticks.  IIRC, those are sometimes referred to as L3 and R3 (on a controller).

Outside of agreeing with the irritating skill slot limitations (why a power wheel wasn't put in by default is beyond me) I couldn't disagree more.

 

While I feel that a few spells and specs (Necro) need some buffing/adjustment, mages were never burst cannons. They were steady, potent damage machines and that hasn't changed at all. In this game I find I can just chain spells together for awesome self-combos and heavy doses of damage.

 

I won't match a Tempest/Assassin rogue - but the point of that class is the burst. I bring control AND heavy sustained damage in a pretty mobile package and I love this incarnation of the mage. Just want to see Necromancer get some adjustments and love so it's as feasible as Rift/KE is.
