Out of all my brothers and sisters, only my oldest sister currently has children, a son and a daughter.

So, I have tried to start getting them both presents for Christmas, which I started last year.

Here's the problem: I may show a bit of favoritism.

My niece seems to be the type that won't have any major issues with anything. Flawless student, generally level headed, courteous, etc.

Alternatively, my nephew is a bit hot blooded, often refuses to follow directions unless they suit his purposes, stubborn, mischievous, and generally a character.

Guess which one I like more.  :P (Though I naturally love them both equally.)

My nephew I always have ideas for, but my niece I often struggle to find presents that I believe will be well-received. I have to find good presents for my niece, and I often have to consult heavily with my mother and my sister to guise my favoritism. While I am set for this year, I would like an alternative method so that my favoritism is less obvious to my mother and sister. I am worried that my niece and nephew will find out eventually from one or both of them.

How can I conceal my opinions regarding my sister's children?

The best option in that instance is to find something they'll both enjoy and get them one each. That's what everyone did for me and my bro when we were growing up. It also depends on how old they are?

Find out what they are each interested in and spend about the same to encourage those interests.

My sister's children are also a boy and a girl. My nephew is a bit of a jock, so he typically gets sports equipment. My niece shows considerable talent as an artist, so she has received quality artist equipment. One year we got my nephew tickets to see the Braves and my niece tickets to the ballet (she also likes dance).

Failing that, there is always a home made ticket for a shopping spree. Fix the price as the same for each and then take each one shopping. Enjoy as their young minds explode with all the possibilities. For your own sanity, limit them to one store each.

I did this for another nephew and he opted to visit the comic book store. After twenty minutes he sat on the floor and just thought as he tried to sort out what the best combination of items was for the money he could spend. When I told him that his funds had to cover tax, he began to embrace higher mathematics for the first time in his young life. For added fun, include a time limit as well.

:)

I used to be a flawless student back when 4 + 5 didn't ask me to measure the angle of my boner whilst considering the trajectory of the sun when Susie bought four apples at four miles per hour on her limousine shaped as a Death Star.

Anyway, on topic... err...

I'm terrible at this so back to the anime thread.

Hmmmmm.

I'm actually confused about where the favoritism lies. Is it with your niece, who you have to ask a lot of questions about? Or with your nephew, since you know exactly what you want to get?

Measuring the angle of your boner? We need more information.

Like what was Susie wearing when she brought you those four apples?

Absolutely nothing but an apron.

Did I mention that Susie was also my sister?

You could just make absolutely no attempt to hide your favouritism; it's what my family does

Buy them nothing, that is the best way to show you treat them equally.

My sister and brother in law seem to believe my nephew is some sort of genius behind all his nuttery (he admittingly is a clever kid) so I try to get him stuff that will encourage technical thinking. Last year was a bunch of legos, for instance.

But again, the niece I have no clue what to get her. My sister lives very far away (opposite coasts), so I can't take their kids out anywhere on any sort of regular basis.

And to those who did ask, I like the nephew better.   Perhaps he reminds me of myself. Every crazy story my sister brings back about him sounds like something I did or one of my brothers did. He seems to have gotten more of the family blood.

Perhaps gift cards or money? I know it's not as personal. But if your nephew enjoys legos, maybe get him a $20 lego gift card to the lego store (if you have one of those.) As far as the niece goes. Could you not call your sister and ask what the youngster is into these days? That would probably give you a better idea. Maybe do a combined gift or a family gift? Something that could be fun for everyone. Like a board game. Cranium is fun (maybe a little too advanced depending on your niece and nephews age.) But if they're both pretty smart and the nephew likes problem solving and creating things. That could definitely tap into that node.
