Crafted armor colors are dependent on the materials you use to make them.
Ex: dawnstone = pink
Dragon scales/webbing = orange
Volcanic aurum= gold
Etc.
Companion armor will look different on each character since they each have their own models for armor.
If you want to see how crafted armor will look on the companion your designing it for just flip through them (I play on ps4 and I believe it's the d-pad) and you'll get a preview.
Edit: I should have said: flip through them while creating the armor. You don't have to wait til it's completed to see how it will look.

... I'm assuming you crafted this armor?

I wish I had known this! I waste crafting materials on armor that I already have because I can't tell what it will look like.

Yeah- it's a nice feature. Sorry you wasted all the crafting materials! It seems like since the mages all have especially unique armor it's very hard to tell what colors will be the primary ones. Something that only has a little orange on the Inquisitor turns Dorian's entire outfit orange. And that's kind of annoying. Have fun!

You can scroll to the toon that will be wearing the armor while crafting to see what it will look like on them before you commit to making it.
