Okay, clearing out a Rift in southern Hinterlands near the lodge.  In the middle of the fight bear shows up, starts attacking things.  Move to fight those and trigger 4 mercs to appear and start attacking me, the bear, and the demons.  Game then spawns wolves and mabari.  So I've got multiple demons, 2 bears, 4 mercs, 3 wolves and 2 mabari and they seem to keep respawning.  Backed the party up to get out of the mess and the mobs fight each other.  Except they keep respawning, at least the mercs, bears and demons do.  Finally went around the fade rift, closed it and got to kill 3 wounded mercs and 1 banged up bear.  But I think there is a sweet spot on that map that is stuck on respawn mode.
