So I love TME. It's just about my favorite DA novel. I loved Imshael and all his terrifying faux affability, and I was very excited that I'd be encountering him in game. The buildup to meeting him was good, with the notes and the hideous reality of all he'd managed to do at that place. I was excited, but I realized at that point that he was following in the trend of the previous uber powerful desire demons that you may or may not take down in previous games, and that I probably wouldn't get quite the depth out of the encounter that I had previously been hoping for.

When I actually reached Imshael, I got what I expected at that point, but I still wish there had been more to it.

In fact, I find Imshael tremendously more interesting than Corypheus, so much so that I wish he could have been our primary antagonist. I understand the numerous reasons he isn't and Corypheus is, but I'm wondering if anyone else wishes Imshael's role had been more significant.

Thoughts?

Ew at him ever being a primary antagonist.

Corypheus wins main villain on his badass voice alone. Imshael sounded weird. I didn't find him to be that interesting at all to be honest. But to each their own.

Love the signature though, lol.

I didn't like the voice either, or his appearance. I didn't like very much at all about the portrayal of him in game as opposed to in TME. He really didn't live up to how I'd been imagining him. I guess that's what I'm mourning over. The crux of it is, I just wanted more...and better.

I was disappointed too. I also dislike that we kill him without Michel there. It was still a fun scene, I loved having my Quizzie ask him for virgins, right in front of her boyfriend, but I agree, he could have been done better.

Given how Gaxkang and Xebenkeck went, I wasn't too surprised.  Probably wasn't a great idea to have him actually appear (or be as interesting as he was) in TME if this was all he was getting in-game, but mistakes happen.

The masked Empire is my favorite Dragon Age book. I also hoped for a greater role for Imshael.

Im not entirely sure if the makers of the novel and the game devs work under the same company. If they dont, then its no wonder that they gave little emphasis to characters in the novel.

DA:I was the vehicle that gave imshael's character closure... More likely, the devs didnt have any intention of adding Imshael, until it was suggested that: "hey, there's this novel called DA: the masked empire and we were hoping you could integrate these characters in the game"

Devs were like: "yeah, ok, we'll see what we can do..."

The writer of TME is one of the major writers of the game ;)

I think he just had a small part because they didn't want to put a lot of focus on a character who wouldn't matter to people outside of the books. It's cool they showed up, and I wish it had been done better, but ultimately it was designed to just be a little nod to the book.

I thought we would be seeing more of Imshael, and Michel as well...

I am disappointed that everything in TME wasn't fully utilized in DAI. I guess that's why they wrote the book in the first place...they knew the background story wasn't going to make it in the game.

I wish there was a plot involving Briala and her eluvians. I actually thought it was going to be a big deal in DAI with that cliffhanger at the end of TME. I thought we'd see Briala and Morrigan working together, and they'd both help us defeat Corypheus! Nope... (Still haven't finished the game but I know Briala doesn't get her eluvian subplot except for an epilogue.)

FWIW, I thoroughly enjoyed the Wicked Hearts mission. I just wish there was more of it.

I liked him a lot, and I'd rather let him go, but... well, dead people. More dead people. That, and he killed an entire Dalish clan(not without Felassan's help, though), which is kind of... not good.

So, dead he is. :(

Well they kind of had it coming...I mean really...who in their right mind thinks that summoning one of the four most powerful demons in the world is really a good idea?

Then after summoning him and realizing that he wasn't going to help they didn't immediately banish him. Instead, they left him around to cause mischief, and then acted all surprised when he did.

Add into the equation that the Dalish clan were being assholes as well as being stupid and it's hard to feel sorry for them in the end.

Hell, even Mihris comes off as an ******* in the game!

Since you're talking about TME, I'll be assuming you've read it. The storyline is pretty much spoiled, I know a lot about Fellasan and Imshael and the general plot, but I'm still very interested in reading it. Should I? Is it well written for a fantasy book and does it expand the lore more than just what I've heard around this forum?

I enjoyed it well enough in its own right, but I will say if you've completed a playthrough of DAI it probably loses a lot of its oomph.

It's my favorite DA novel. The characters are some of the best written (again, for a DA novel. I'm not comparing it to a Song of Ice and Fire). Gaspard has devoted following. I'm a big fan of Felassan and Briala. I was pressuring everyone who would listen to read it before the game came out.

As for expanding on the lore...sort of. It might bring up more questions than it answers. Bits of the game feel more involved if you've read it. Meeting the Dalish Elf, Mihris in the Hinterlands with Solas felt pretty huge to me at the time.

If you've already played the game, it's more likely to deepen your understanding of the world than it is to broaden it. There won't really be any big surprises.

I was disappointed with Imshael's portrayal in game as he was, in my opinion, the only enjoyable part of The Masked Empire. Still, I'm not surprised. His part was comparable to the other Forbidden Ones, and was more integrated into the plot than they were.

Ah Imshael, the magnificent bastard. I wish there were more of him and I would've liked some cinematics, but that's solely because I read TME. I assume he's not that engaging otherwise. Did anyone else noticed him wearing something that looked suspiciously similar to Anders's outfit. What gives?

As I've never bought any of the Dragon Age materials apart from the three games (and Awakening expansion), I didn't know that this mostly irrelevant villain with minor screentime and little buildup was supposed to be something special until I read it on these boards.

Retroactively I get it that he was integral to part of Corypheus plans in the Emprise du Lion, but imagine for fun how it goes if you, like me, don't know anything about him, enter Emprise du Lion, meet some guy named Michel at the gate to the keep and tell him that sure, you'll deal without whatever minor issue of revenge he has, since due to the linear nature of the zone you are going to clear out the keep anyhow on the way to deal with Samson's Lyrium production and the town's mining problems, battle your way through the keep, meet some unimportant minor spirit/demon that has no importance to you apart from it, apparently, being in charge here and the target of Michel's quest, and slaughter in on general principles with few problems and nothing special happening in the fight apart from a wave or two of extra minor demons.

...and then you go to the forums, and people say, "Ooh, that was IMSHAEL!" :D

If THAT is supposed to be one of the most powerful spirits/demons in the world as some of you suggest, or devious, or a magnificent bastard, or whatever, I can well understand if you feel that both the build up, the execution of temptation, and the fight was underdeveloped. Certainly I never got the feeling that it was anything special. :D

EDIT: Yes, I get it. He is a spirit of choice. Or at least, he pretends to be. But he came across as a minor desire demon with augmented combat powers, only one much worse written than those from DA:O.

I actually made a deal with him. I didn't know much about him but he seemed more interesting in the small bit he had than Cory in the entire game. Cory does have a badass voice though.

Choice. Spirit.
