I'm in the process of hoarding as much gold as I can to find out the cap (or at least until I feel satisfied getting some use out of my current upgrades before they're obsoleted) and I'm suddenly painfully aware of how expensive health potions are. 50 gold a pop, that's like two decent threatening pots. And I seem to always be the only one in my party who's OCD about grabbing all of them.

 

You can probably afford to not even bother with these if you've got a ring of life drain or something, but I don't lol.

Yes, heal on kill rings greatly reduce their use.  I find myself using health potions more as a release from stuns/panic/etc.  

 

It may not be ideal, but if you really want to conserve them you could use mages with a staff that has up to 8% heal on kill from upgrades attached to the staff.

You craft those attachments.  The only really limiting factor is getting the cotton.
