I'll make sure to notify Bioware about your athletic shortcomings next time they make a game then.
Not all of us can afford to replace our spine with a cooked noodle, the insurance increase alone is mind blowing!

I guess femquisitor represents the fanfiction obsessed tumblr girls who spend all day slouched at their computer getting offended about meaningless stuff. So I'd say Bioware does a great job at representing their demographic. (I mean seriously, Cassandra, a badass warrior tough no nonsense chick just melts reading a shitty novel, the fanservice is strong in this one)
But in all seriousness the main issue with the animations is that they didn't use motion capture (I assumed that from the fact that characters don't move like humans) so they couldn't get an accurate movement animation. Without motion capture it is incredibly difficult to get any sort of decent looking animations in 3d animation software. It is weird, since they have a huge budget and can afford a motion capture studio. All non mo-capped animations will always look exaggerated and weird.

You don't need mocap to know that a spine moves back and forth, not much side to side. If they were going to do some kind of sexy strut they could have at least made it plausible (a lot more leg movement, with the legs crossing one in front of the other to make the hips sway a bit) it would still be horrible for roleplaying and induce eye-rolling in many but at least it wouldn't look freakish.

You know this for a fact?

I think they should make it like Saints Row 4 where you can pick from your body type, skinny/fat/muscle percentages, walking styles, height. I mean come on, It's 2014. If they brag about making the game "your personal roleplaying experience" they should give more ways to customize your character. I agree with the fact that they should've done a better job at animating, I just dislike people like the OP with their militant calls to arms and shouting "misoginy" whenever they dislike something.
Technical incompetence =/= discrimination
Btw, hip movement is sexy, deal with it.

I would like to recommend a motion capture model for the ultimate feminine gait (no joke, I'm totally serious)

Oh god, that's like a Skyrim mod
I said not much, also those are dots. Try to bend 90 degrees forward, easy right? Now try to bend to the side without moving your legs the way femquisitor runs.

Hadn't noticed the walk, though Cassandra does seem to be suffering some odd back ailment.
Isn't Cassandra the toughest man in the game? She excites me - yet scares me at the same time! I get so confused. ![]()

I agree that there's no need for name calling or accusations towards BioWare, but it's not just angry name-callers that dislike this. Having either a neutral and natural animation or the ability to choose the animation you want (the sims 4 does this as well) would be an ideal solution.

I see no problem with that walk, her spine is in a normal position and it's not exaggerated or forced. ![]()
I Think it's clear from this thread that some women have no freaking idea what it is they want. I remember some BSNers complaining about the way their female walked during that cut scene in Haven, citing that it "looked too manly."
You realise that you're abstracting the different opinions of an entire forum and using that as evidence of individuals not being able to make up their mind?
As for Haven, she defaults to the male animations in that cutscene. She's too manly because people are triping over gender terms explaining that she walks like an aggressive gorilla, which is the default male walk. A lot of people don't like either animation set, that's pretty easy to understand, if you even try.
And when did I insinuate I wanted to force anyone else's gender concepts on them? Ever? You're putting words in my mouth here. What all of YOU people are doing however is forcing some gender neutral bull**** that doesn't exist.
Oh please. I didn't accuse you of forcing your gender ideals, I'm saying anyone playing a woman in a BioWare game has to put up with that animator's gender ideal. The point is that though they may want to walk like a woman, they don't agree with that animator's idea of how a woman walks.
Wanting a more neutral walk doesn't have to equate to gender neutrality. But it really shouldn't be such a big deal if someone wants that either.
Then I wouldn't feel like my own character though. I wouldn't feel like I was role playing as a MALE Inquisitor.
How very insecure.
Where on the BSN? May I see how this was done? In what context? Oh and I don't want a summation of your version of events. I would like a link to this, please.
Forgive me if I'm not inclined a series of stereotypes as fact, but I think you understand. I would expect you to ask the same of me if I was stereotyping to such an extreme level.
I honestly looked (searched on multiple levels) but the search feature and "My Content" windows suck. They seem to miss half of everything and even though I know for a fact that there is a thread with the word "Brothel" in the title, i can't find it. As such. I'm not going to spend hours trying to track all this down. You go on thinking whatever you want.

So I see you have no evidence from the BSN to back up your stance. I would have been in those threads going, "WTF?" at posters that make those suggestions you claim people on the BSN had asked for. Thank you for proving that you were making it all up, at least when it comes to this forum board.
I'm sure you've probably heard that in other places, but not so much here.
There has to be some middle ground between Japanese Anime Bimbo and Mannish though.
Yeah I wish. Maybe the motion capture actor should be an actress you base all walking, fighting, running, climbing, ect off her movements even male hero the reason why they can't make a fem character run like a normal actual woman is because they aren't motion capturing a woman doing so allowing her to move naturally. We can see the difference with how the women of Last of Us and Jodi Holmes move compared to the women of bioware so far though DA3 ladies have the worst run, walk, ect of the recent bioware lot.
I run like you describe OP...

The running looks very painfully.. poor girl.
The running looks very painfully.. poor girl.
Not to mention that it's obvious that she's playing it up for the camera. This was meant to show off how sexy the woman is, not a natural walk. I showed it to my husband and he could tell that she wasn't running or walking naturally. ![]()
This is footage of actual female athletes running. Note the lack of extreme hip sway. The hips move, but not like pendulums:
My husband just sent me footage of a woman marathon training in high heels and her hips don't move as extreme as the game animation when she runs. The most of that hip swaying occurs when she's running through some rough terrain, and remember, this is in high heels:
And my character isn't in high heels.
.
The wider the hips, the more sway. Those women are all athlets in running. It is kinda normal that they're all very slender. No I'm not saying that women with wider hips can't run there, but obviously the upper league of the competition are all slender builds and it is to assume that they have an advantage being as they are.
I'm not defending the ingame animation, just pointing out some things we don't see in these videos. I'm pretty sure Bioware did push this a bit. Sex sells after all. But it isn't all pure fiction I guess.
The Skyhold outfit really highlights the crazy side to side spinal movement since there's a line going down the middle back of her shirt. It's so horrible, I think it's in uncanny valley territory for me which is why it's creeping me out so much.
"Uncanny valley" typicaly means that something looks almost real, but not quite, which is kinda off-putting. Since you were saying that the animation is totally off I guess this isn't the right term to describe this. Please correct me if I misunderstood.
As long as the boobies bouce when she runs, we can all be happy, right?
*Look around for a high five...*
Well played.
As a woman, and a bisexual one at that, while I can appreciate the view, I can't help but think, "Oh ouch." When certain things can bounce, you need the extra support to prevent injury. Much the same as with men. ![]()

Heals don't create hip sway its the difference in width between your feet and your hips. Men generally move with feet directly below hip joints where's in women their feet are inside of this line. Women are also more prone to exaggerate the natural effect by placing one foot directly in front of the other, and Catwalk models go one step further by crossing their legs as they walk.

Hmm, I didn't know that. Thanks for the info.
If anything, it makes the design choice just seem that much sillier.
I guess all I can hope for is that the next game tries to do a better job on this front. Something more middle ground between "gorilla stomp" and "model walk" for both genders. <shrug>
I like the girly girl walking, I'm a girly girl so I like the girly hip swaying running style. I have noticed though in many cut scenes my girly girl character walks like a cowboy, that's really odd.
She also sits with her legs wide apart like a man and that's really not a nice, I cringe every time I see her sitting down like that.
Dragons dogma was a game that gave you the opportunity to personalise your characters stance and movement style, they also had a hairdresser, I know cause I visited her at least ten times every game. ![]()
