While we're on the subject of ME, I never was bothered by FemShep's animations at all. They never stood out to me as odd. I never even really noticed them at all (well, apart from when she was wearing the dress). But as soon as I fired up DA2 and saw female Hawke, the first thing I noticed was the hip wiggle - it just stood out like a sore thumb to me. Maybe it's because I don't really walk that way irl, and I had planned to make a no nonsense not-really-feminine Aveline-type warrior who definitely wouldn't walk like that. Instead I felt forced to recreate the character into a rogue who was basically Isabela #2 because the characterization of that walk was just so strong.

Sometimes I really wish I had the money to get myself a proper new gaming PC so I could just mod the proper walk onto my no-nonsense unfeminine warrior women. :/

I'll be honest, I much prefer the animation in DA:I to the one in ME 3.

But I think the best one was in the first Mass Effect. It looked... normal. It wasn't pushed in any particular direction.

It's a pretty fun word to be honest :D

Right? Bim-bo. Bimmmmmm-bo. I recall efforts to bring the masculine "himbo" and "mimbo" failed even though there are plenty of men who fit the stereotype. It is, of course, better that we agree not to denigrate anyone through language at all but, yes, fun sounds/phonemes fallen from use.

So when a movie set in the real world has a male "chosen one" hero, that makes it a better story than a movie with a female "chosen one" hero because Jesus was male, the Pope is male, and all priests are male?

But there's a tradition of female Saints, female religious icons, etc. as well, whereas in Thedas, the only major "chosen ones" of the Maker and Andraste have all been one gender (iirc). In real life, God has allegedly chosen figures from several genders to represent him, but that isn't the case in Thedas. I think a better comparison for Andraste would actually be Joan of Arc rather than Jesus, considering the martial bent of the Chantry, her liberation of France being compared with liberating Thedas from Tevinter, and the fact that Andraste was the Maker's bride, not His daughter.

Plus, nobody's saying it's a "better story", just that a female protagonist fits in with the theme of female messianic figures. Which it does.

Seriously? When did you last see a female athlete run like that? Even Ronda Rousey doesn't look that stupid running. Bit sexist if you ask me. I mean maybe some of the girlier characters might run that way but the Warriors? I'd like to see this bit of Misogyny dealt with in future releases.

I feel bad for whoever this Ronda Rousey person is tbh, what did she do to get this steamroller thrown on her?

They made an extra effort to make them run like girls because they walk like gorillas. (In cut scenes)

The cut scenes are the male animation anyhow.   They made a special walk run (no method of walking on the PC) just for female Inquisitors during regular gameplay.  They didn't have to do it and frankly, I wish they hadn't.  I do agree that the male animation does have quite a bit of the "gorilla" look to them and really isn't any better than the pendulum booty imho.

That seems very loose.  I could just as easily say being male offers a nice balance between the major religious figures of the world.

That's true, but for what's worth our brains are very attuned to determining patterns (whether there's any or not) so i suspect this "another holy woman, we have a theme!" train of thoughts forms a solid appeal. The balance thing you bring as the alternative actually works by recognizing that in the opposite situation (inquisitor being a woman, not a man) there would be a pattern :)

I never noticed this until I took control over Cassandra one time after a battle and was moving her someplace. When I saw how she ran I kind of giggled to myself LOL

Playing as a warrior with heavy armour and a shield on the back thankfully masks the silly sashaying of the hips.. though running around in pajammas makes it very painfully obvious.

Hawke also sashayed absurdly in DA2, was even worse I think. It took me a long long time to be able to stop fixating on how irritating and absurd it looks. The sillyness of it aside, it namely bothered me in that it's actually impossible to run like that. With practice someone could WALK like that (runway models etc practice sashaying their hips, etc) but to run like that is not possible and is a distracting absurd visual nuisance.

I'm glad my character wears heavy armour + shield 90% of the time in the game, can't really see it occuring with that thankfully.

Fortunately, the inquisitor's feet aren't landing as laughably close to one another on a straight line compared to Hawke... I swear playing DA2 had me constantly fearing she was going to fall over sideways  at some point :)

I agree. The way they movie is really irritating and I would have preferred to have the option to choose.

The hip-sway doesnt mother me so much as the weird arms thing she does, arms held away from sides, hands kinda flipped up. its weird

Apparently, it's a habit I have. (And have had for at least ten years, possibly longer.) It appears to be partly because I have .. ahem .. 'good child-bearing hips'. AKA, I'm the female body type that has a really broad pelvis.

Twisting the arm at the shoulder allows me to bend my elbows in such a way that my forearms clear the pelvis. When my arms hang straight, they don't quite clear it.

That said, only a percentage of women have such a combination of hip/shoulder widths that encourage that habit. Certainly elf-Inquisitor has narrow enough hips not to need to do it!

No don't change the walking animation! I'm a girly girl myself(and probably walks a bit like that XD), and I like the animation. Just make options. Like I for one would sometimes want to create a girl that's tomboyish. But most of the time I WANT the bit of seductress kind of character. Not everyone wants their female to walk like a freakin man.

I don't like the neutral option for DA:O either. Ugh! Hated how my character walked like that wearing a dress/mage robe. It's so irritating that I imagine my character to be this feminine mage and then she starts walking like a thug. UGH. It's not even neutral, that's a MASCULINE walk.

Also, there's nothing sexist about the way female's walk in Inquisition. It's like saying the male's manly/thug walk is sexist aswell and that we should have the option of making them walk like a diva.

DA:O wasn't neutral. It was very obviously male.  That's the whole reason why it got changed in DA2 - we all complained about it so much!  ^_^

I can not STAND the whole slouchy, shuffling walk the Inquisitor does. It makes me cringe every time I see it. I don't need an especially feminine walk (or masculine) just one with half way decent posture. It seems especially incongruous in the noble Inquisitor.

Bioware can not win have them walk like a man moan.

Have them walk like a women moan can not win would not blame them if they just give up.

DAO was neutral to me cause I never saw anything wrong with it, it didn't look too feminine nor too masculine. DA2's and DAI's in other hand is cringe-worthy, I can't take my character seriously with those animations. And the gorilla animations in cutscenes aren't any better.

I love DA:O to death, but I will admit this: the running in it wasn't good. Looked like the characters were wearing a diaper. A full one.

I dont see a problem at all with the female jogging animation. I've seen plenty women with full hips jog like that, my lady included. When she runs at a full clip though her posture tends to get more rigid.

I more neutral animation for both male and female is probably the best solution, but I'm ok with the female running animation,it's the animation for the cut-scenes that make my eyes bleed, because right now the female character is walking with a pair between her legs and has serious case of kyphosis.

I'd dare a guess the moaning would significantly decrease if the animators let go off the idea that like a man/woman part of the animations has to be so ridiculously exaggerated.

If the male walk cycle didn't involve knuckle-dragging and slouching shoulders (which is hardly something you actually see when men walk) there's good odds you wouldn't see people complain their female character drags her knuckles and slouches her shoulders in the cutscenes which reuse the 'male' walk animations. Similarly, if sitting poses didn't involve taking three seats worth of space because the PC's balls are apparently that huge, you wouldn't see complains how the female character using the same pose spreads her legs like she's opening business. Shocking as the concept may sound, there's more than one way men can sit and some are pretty gender neutral.

Seriously, I understand not having the resources to make two sets of animations for cutscenes -- but that means that in order for it not to be jarring as F, the cutscene animation NEEDS to be at least somewhat neutral.

I very much dislike how gendered the regular animations are as well, and I think they'd be wayyyyy better off more neutral in both directions as well.

I just.... really don't understand the design decision behind making the walking/running anims so exaggerated. It doesn't fit my gentler/more distinguished m!quizzies. it doesn't fit my feminine f!quizzies OR my masculine ones, because one of them is OOC in cutscenes and the other is OOC out of them! Basically the only character type this fits is macho men, what a freaking surprise.

And then there's all the anatomical issues with the pendulum hips, which, ugh. Women can walk sexily and still have functioning spines you guys.

Here's to hoping the animators (or whoever decides these things) get their heads out of their a**es and freaking quit it with the gorilla stomp/wood nymph skipping through the woods dichotomy for the next games, but at this point I'm not holding my breath.

Do you consider the animations of Lara from the 2013 tomb raider to be "manish?" https://www.youtube....h?v=LxV6lxMysyY I think they're perfect. Feminine, but realistic and efficient and her spine doesn't flop like a cooked noodle which creeps me out sooo much in DA2 and DA:I.

Bioware can not win have them walk like a man moan.

How about BioWare stops making the animations so extreme and stylized? Man doesn't have to equal brutish gorilla that just got off a horse, and woman doesn't have to equal spine flopping sashay.

I don't mind it for my female inquisitor because it fits her. What bothers me a LOT is the dumb pose with her arms sticking out in pajamas when talking to someone in skyhold. Anybody try to hold your arms like that and not moving anything but your lips for that long and see how sore you get.
There needed to be better body language during conversations is what I am saying
