I am not that used to RPGs where you have to take care of your party too. So that's why i have a few questions.

I am now exploring the Hinterlands and having a great time doing so, i find plenty of stuff along the way. Things like helmets and armor. My own character has the Dragon armor from the DLC, but my party members of course not. My question is...if i find an armor that clearly has a better armor rating, but it doesn't have a few extra perks that the other armor does have, what is best to choose? Let's say Cassandra's armor is 68 armor rating and has +4% stagger on being hit, but then i find a armor that has 72 armor rating but no perks. I assume her current one is most wisest to keep then, right?

As for weapon, she currently has her Inquisition Longsword, but i can now give her a Ferelden captain longsword. The former has 48DPS and the latter has 65DPS.  The former has 43 damage (next to that crossed swords icon) and the latter has 59 damage. The former has +4% attack and the latter has +3% attack. Clearly i should give her the Ferelden sword, right?

What if i find a much better crossbow than Varric's Bianca?

Last question for now....i have Solus in my party and i'd like him to heal party members during combat. If i remember correctly in DAII there was a simple healing spell, but i cannot really find it in Character record screen so far.

There is no healing for mages so you need to use potions.

For your first questions I am not sure how the armors work so can not help you.

If the weapon you like has an upgrade slot you can upgrade it, aswell as armors. The same goes for Bianca, it's very powerful with the high tier parts. As for what you should choose, it's up to you and how you build the character. For me I like to find a balance between gameplay and roleplay, like if I play a cold mage I would like to use a cold-type staff. And yes, no healing spells, only barrier/guard and healing/rejuvenation potions

That's going to make it really challenging for me, cause right now i keep dying in this Hinterlands part. And when i do finally survive this part...and i have no potions left, damn :(. Ah well, they clearly didn't dumb it down from previous games in this regard.

If you go back to camp you can replenish the potions or you can open the map and transport to the camp if you like.

In my experience (level 21, 80+ hours in) the equipment you find will not be balanced.  The weapons and armor you find for a warrior will in general be much better than that for the other classes.  For me, in order of both quality and quantity, it goes:

Warrior Armor

2-Handed Warrior Weapons

Rogue Blades

1-Handed Warrior Weapons

Mage Armor

Mage Staffs

Rogue Armor

Rogue Bows

Rogue Armor - both found and schematics, seems to be the most rare.  While I come across the others fairly frequently, the good Rogue eq. has only been in the deepest corners of the areas in some sidequests.  I went about 10 levels using the same bow for Sera before I found a better one.

Yeah that's quite useful, but damn....i remember some fights in II where the healing spell saved our lives countless of times. Oh boy...

1. The loots are mostly random and will not adapt to your party.

So either you save and reload often or bear with it.

Crafting is strongly suggested by players but the shematic also depend of your luck to drop them.

2. There is no normal healing spells.

You've to depend on guards skills/spells and potions instead.

Me too.  Takes a lot of getting used to.  My strategy has been to get the perk that gives you 12 potions instead of 8, and to over level before moving on to harder quests.

Maybe someone has theory-crafted and could give you a spreadsheet that gives the definitive answer to your questions, but in the mean time you'll just have to use your own judgement.

Is +4% stagger worth -4 armour points? To me, probably not. Am I correct at a theory-crafting level? Who knows. My gut says I want that extra armour for my tank.

Is +17 dps worth -1% attack? To me, definitely.

What if you find a better crossbow? Well, use it!

Yeah i asked it because Bianca is Varric's trademark weapon, but more damage is always good indeed.

My main character is a one handed warrior dwarf. What abilities are most recommended for me?

Oh and in haven i found several locked jail doors, i need a rogue for that it says, but i dont have my party with me in Haven. How do i get this to open?

Just want to add that Varric can only use Bianca. (Or 2 daggers)

Really nice yeah. Where do i find this perk?

Ok good to know then. I had not tried changing it yet.

So far i am loving this game, just checking out locations, exploring around, finding loot, reading books and journals on the way. Oh man this is such a far cry from DAII in terms of everything, i love the freedom in this one and so far i am loving the locations and how they look too. Right now checking out the storm coast, i think that's what it's called.

When it comes to bonuses on armor, it depends on what the bonus is.
4% chance to stagger on being hit isn't that important, so I'd go with the higher armor rating.

When it comes to healing spells, the only one you can get is in one of the specialization trees (Knight Enchanter) that revives and heals the entire party to full health.

Specializations are available after you get to Skyhold.

The closes thing to a healing spell aside from this is in the mage's "Spirit" tree, called "Revival". This will revive all fallen allies within a certain radius of where you cast it, and the upgrade gives bonus damage resistance to all allies within that radius (previously dead or alive).

Aside from that, barrier is like an extra health bar that enemies must break through first before they can damage the character's health.
Same thing with guard.

Edit: Oh, and with how %attack works, it makes your skills stronger based on a % of your weapon damage.

So as a basic comparison on an attack that does 100% weapon damage.
43 damage + 4% = 44.72

59 damage + 3% = 60.77

On lower level weapons with small attack bonus %, it's not a big difference.
When you're using a weapon that's 300+ dps with a 40% attack bonus, it makes a much more significant change.

Oh and in haven i found several locked jail doors, i need a rogue for that it says, but i dont have my party with me in Haven. How do i get this to open?

Go talk to Sera. There should a conversation option "I need some locks opened". Afterwards when you go back to the Chantry, the doors will be unlocked.

Note that they have a broad range of enemy levels for each area (4 to 12 in the Hinterlands). You are not supposed to do everything in one area before moving into the next one. Go to Storm Coast, do some stuff there and come back to Hinterlands later. Be especially careful when approaching dragon territories, most main areas have at least one dragon and they have really beefed them up from the previous games.

Also, you have only a few areas available early on. You need to proceed with the main quest and more (higher level) areas will be unlocked.
