First of all thank you for reading. I don't know where or when or even how to choose which side to be on when it comes to the templars or the mages. I am still pretty much at the beginning of the game. Is it obvious when it happens? Do I just keep playing the game? Thank you!
When do I choose?

Yes, it's very obvious. They give you a warning saying "If you side with the Templars, it will be impossible to side with the Mages."

After you go to the Hinterlands and talk to Mother Giselle, you'll be tasked with a quest to Val Royeaux. When you leave, you'll encounter Grand Enchanter Fiona who will invite you to Redcliffe. Your advisors will suggest going to talk to the templars instead. Be aware that even getting *close* to Redcliffe Village will commit you to In Hushed Whispers, making Champions of the Just unavailable, so if you want to side with the templars, you must avoid that part of the map. You'll have warning when you're getting close. You will be able to access Redcliffe after Champions of the Just is complete, by the way.

This is not true. You can go to Redcliffe, and even meet with the mages and stuff and still decide to the side with the Templars. The decision comes at the war table where you have to commit to one or the other when you actually spend the power.

Maybe my game is bugged? When I entered Redcilffe, I got within sight of the walls, I got a popup that said In Hushed Whispers was initiated.

So it is pretty obvious when you got to choose? I have already spent 4 power points on some random mission I didn't even know about. To be honest I don't know exactly what they do. Do power points just open more side and random missions? Is it separate from the main story? I just hope the choice is obvious. I really want to side with the Mages even though I am a dwarf lol.

Yes, fardreamer's was a serious and accurate post. I've found you can indeed enter Redcliffe, just don't enter the Inn where you would talk with Grand Enchanter Fione unless you wish to side with the Mages. You can recruit the Redcliffe healer and you can resolve the black market merchant quest. You can gain the missing goat quest, the flowers for the dead quest, and the storyteller's quest. Just don't enter the Inn to meet Fiona.
To make sure you won't commit before you want to, then before you close the rift in front of the redcliffe gate save the game. Once you have run around in Redcliffe but not entered the Inn, head back to the warroom and make sure both the Templar site in the southeast of Ferelden and the Redcliffe site still have the green flame over their pieces on the Ferelden map. If the Templar one is gone and you do not want to side with the Mages the simply reload the pre-Redcliffe rift save.

It's not bugged. Going to Redcliffe does make Hushed Whispers available, but you are not locked into it until choosing on the war table later.Maybe my game is bugged? When I entered Redcilffe, I got within sight of the walls, I got a popup that said In Hushed Whispers was initiated.
In fact, NOT going to Redcliffe is a bad idea as I believe the village becomes completely unavailable if you don't go there before siding with The Templars.
Edit, you can I fact meet Fiona and go to the meeting in the chantry and still side with the Templars. I did this on my last playthrough.

Not to mention there's an agent to be recruited in the tavern in Redcliffe. I'm not sure if he'd still be around if you don't side with the mages, so I always go meet Dorian even when I'm going to side with the Templars.
