For comparison, I have a retail copy of Dawn of War 2. I added that CD Key to steam, and now I can install DOW2 from steam, and it is associated with my steam account. I like having my games in one place: How do I do that with ME2?

Edit: Or it not designed for retail to work with Steam.

It only worked with DoW2 because it was Steam-exclusive. Yes, you can buy it at retail but you couldn't activate it without Steam.Aerinheart wrote...
I picked up the retail box because I wanted the artbook, and it installed and works fine. No worries. But when I try to activate the product on Steam, it won't let me (gives me the Invalid Code error).

If it doesn't work, and there's no plans to make it work, that's a kick in the nuts. A kick in the nuts for no apparent reason... anyone have a clue why the incompatibility?
Only steam-only retail games work with steam, like MW2 and DOW. Why would valve want you to register a game on steam, when they get no money at all from it?

You expected Steam to be a magical not-for-profit company that let you register games and use their bandwidth for free?Aerinheart wrote...

As others have said...not all games are connected to steam via the download.
The DRM on ME2 isn't excessive is it? Just a CD check right?

Right, just add as a "non-Steam" game. You can still use the overlay no problem.abadomen wrote...

Retail is just cd-check like the old days.

Because Bioware opted not to use Steamworks.
If they had, you would have gotten:
Steam Achievements
Save file/settings sync across PCs
Community intergration
As others have said, you can add the executable file for Mass Effect 2 into your Steam games window and even make a shortcut for Mass Effect 2 with Steam.
Launch Mass Effect 2 from there and you'll have the Steam Overlay running.

The DRM for Mass Effect 2 is a simple disk check.

I expected that a game available on steam would be steam compatable. But then I didn't expect people to act like condescending twits on an internet forum, so I'm obviously out of touch

Ugh... I figured that we DID have community integration, and steam achievements. I had all that with dragon age... but of course, I bought that one FROM steam.

I think it depends on the "alliance" Steamworks have with publishers, but like Dr.Bob UK said, "if they had opted to use Steamworks, they would have Steam Achievements, Cloud and community integration."
Here was my two penny post.

True.
Developers usually announce whether their games will use Steamworks or not.

Not all games released on steam have steam achievements. In fact dragon age does not have steam achievements, it has in game achievements.
