Sorry if this has been clarified before.  My searches were inconclusive.

Am I mistaken in thinking that the game assigns skills to party members in a random way as opposed to using a preset build that suits the characters features?

For example.  I did an auto-level on Varric and found that the game assigned him a bunch of Sabotage skills instead of focusing on his ranged bow skills.   Does the Hook and Tackle skill even make sense if he's only equipped to use his bow Bianca?   Did I waste some skills doing it this way?

I was hoping the game would build each character a certain way and that I could then build my own character to compliment them.  But now it seems I should reset Varric to reassign his skills to be a ranged character.

Like you i wanted my companions to auto-assign their skills, thinking they would all follow some sort of preset build which would make all of them unique and decently competent. Unfortunately, it does seem that the auto-assign button just randomly picks skills.

Varric starts with Long Shot, which does more damage the further he is from the target. This makes Hook and Tackle 100% counterproductive for him.

EDIT: Actually, it does not appear to be totally random after all. Every time i respec Varric's points and make him auto-level, the following 4 skills get selected: Stealth, Long Shot, Hook and Tackle, Caltrops.
