Why was the magic school system dumb down so much?

Only 4 schools and 3 of them are more or less only damage spells... Not to mention the elemental school used to be just 1 school (Primal) and now it's 3 separate schools?

It seems so bland, what happened to creation, arcane, entropy and the specializations?  I started as a mage but as soon as I saw how limited they were I immediately lost interest.

You will get some specializations that bring some of the favored spells back from those lines-but yes, the simplification is continuing.

Because they have to be able to put the same game on a console platform as a pc, so, lowest common demonotor for system requirements. (that is not an intended insult to console players-just a description of a hardware platform difference).

I play on PC entirely, MMOs and singleplayer games alike.  They are all taking the same course of simplifying to make them viable on consoles.

I don't really get it either. Half the fun of playing a mage was combining different trees and spells. It just doesn't do that at all in this game, at least in the early part. There's not a lot to get excited or strategic about.

There are some fun combinations in DAI, but the spell trees are awfully light on anything that doesn't do direct damage.

To play devil's advocate, what spells are missing (outside of healing obviously >.>) that you feel stood out from DAO? I know the Entropy tree was probably the most unique one that vanished now but Necromancer and Rift Mage both incorporate some of that flavor in their abilities.

I think the magic tree may have been stripped a bit, but I find myself with PLENTY of control and damage when I need it, in addition to having the ability to provide support via barriers. If anything, I almost feel like there's TOO much CC available for mages - not a complaint mind you, but between fire/ice walls, static cage, veilstrike, horror, conflag, etc there's no shortage of ways to stop an enemy in their tracks and combo/burst them down on your own if you wish.

Hell static cage/pull of the abyss are so patently strong it's rare anything ever gets even remotely close to my mage and that's counting stealthed rogues given you can predict their movement and see that shimmer to predict.

So for the sake of discussion, WHAT exactly are we missing from DAO that isn't replicated in DAI or that wasn't largely a different named spell that accomplished the same overall effect?

LOL xD The anti-mage spell!

Also - as a flavor complaint, why do the enemy mages get to do that cool "channel from their spell books" casting and we're all doing staff-fu all the time? Granted while I enjoy the visual eye-candy, I wanna whip out my tome and be like "LIGHTNING BOLT!" from time to time too :(

What in the blazing hell does a console have to do with anything, given that DAO, DAA, and DA2 all had varied magic systems, on consoles as well as PC?

And as far as the OP - Given Skyrim's influence, I imagine they saw the trimming Bethesda did to their magic trees, and went "Hey, let's see if we can cut out more than they did!"

Honestly though, DAI's entire stance is anti-variability. Not just mages, but across the board.

Yes, I'd like more diversive spells. The more different spells to choose from the better is what I say.

I really miss the Force mage from DA2. I had so much fun with that and was planning on making my Quizzy one as well... only to learn it wasn't in. And that was after I found out Blood magic wasn't in either after deciding my Quizzy was gonna be a blood mage :P So much disappointment lol. My Hawke was a Force mage with only a bit of Ice magic thrown in, as the Primal school was never really my favorite. And mage is my favorite class so yeah... in that regard the options for a mage in DAI is a little disappointing.

Rift Mage should satisfy a good chunk of your Force Mage wants IMO. While it's not DIRECTLY the same obviously, it's got a very "forcey" feel in terms of slamming things around, knocking em over and pulling things in for AoE fun times.

I chose Rift mage on my first PT and yes, it was fun. Still not as fun as Force mage, but I'm glad DAI has something similar ^_^

Because Dungeons & Dragons v4.0 ruleset which close to made every class exactly equal to everything else in the game was a huuuge hit with the RPG community and put stuff like Pathfinder to shame! If a mage is to be as good as an archer he obviously has to be just like an archer. Also balance is hard.

And in case you haven't noticed, it's hard to do anything more complicated than "push 'A' to win" with a game that has to work on a console, because you can never have any sort of UI menus in console games. Everyone knows that. That just doesn't work as previous installments has shown to not be the case.

Besides that, why on earth would you want to do anything but damage to an enemy? It's not like blinding a big dude with a sword would even matter when the sword has full 360 degree AOE damage for absolutely no reason. Since they've reduced the AI to pre-industrial levels they've also removed any sort of reason to have "complicated magic". Everything is glued to an invincible tank for your convenience.

What "unlockable" specialized schools are there then?  There are more than just the four basic ones you start with?

Yes - in addition to your 4 base schools, you will then be able to pick between Necromancer, Rift Mage and Knight Enchanter.

KE is like a more souped up version of the Arcane Warrior from DAO with a pretty awesome spirit blade attack and absurd durability if specced properly.

Rift Mage is your slam things around and set up my own combos while weakening them too - my personal favorite.

Necromancer has one of my old favorite spells - Walking Bomb - and some other interesting skills like reanimating a killed target as a spirit but I would argue it's probably the most awkward of the three right now. Still a good tree, but it can be more difficult to harness well and Walking Bomb can be hampered by how much mobs run around/evade at times. Having a Rift Mage along (Solas) lets you pull things in and then drop some serious carnage on them from Walking Bomb.

They should simplify these console controllers, too.  They are too advanced for these new games.

All these triggers, sticks and buttons.

All people really need these days is one button dedicated to rift nuke. And a stick to move around.

I honestly believe it's to compensate for the lack of diversity that the other classes have had all along.
