But given that the loot teleports to us, clearly realism wasn't a valued principle.Realism? I guess? That's all I can think of really.

I rather suspect it's a bug, rather than a feature, simply because it doesn't happen consistently, but rather only some of the time. And I haven't noticed it happening more (or less) often with enemies I've killed at a great distance than with enemies I've killed closer up. Though I haven't specifically focused on identifying the commonalities of situations where it did happen, to be certain that there aren't any regularities.
As a bug though, it's not the worst kind - sometimes it's quite convenient.
The looting system in the game in general is too slow, I think, with the full looting animation taking too long. Also, when you loot something, and get the loot screen that allows you to pick what to loot, the game should automatically pause while you're doing the picking. It's annoying when you loot, say a chest, and you didn't notice that one more enemy around the corner that now rushes you... while you are browsing the loot screen, with the game unpaused.

Not to mention the other gameplay contrivances. I just can't think of any other reason.

I shall now simply roleplay that my mage is mentally grabbing her loot bags similar to how she energies obstacles while I look at my fellow companions and be like "Fetch it yourself peasant" and select them to walk over and get their loot.

I've noticed it too. I thought it was a bug because my experience of it was that it generally happened if there was a significant difference in heights eg I was attacking from half way up a slope at targets that were below me, something more or less on the 'same level' meant a trip over to a loot bag that was where they went down.
I haven't actually tested this, it was just something that I started noticing after I realised that sometimes the loot from a kill was 'teleporting' to my feet/just behind me on some occasions.

Yes, you'd think that if it was a feature, it would be consistent. Which it isn't. I'm kind of curious why it happens, but not particularly worried about it. It's only annoying when you head over to where you killed the enemy, only to realize the loot is back where you were standing. With the new ping function on the mini-map, finding where the darn things are isn't so hard anymore.

I love this feature, but in my game I get loots bags at my feet for fights me or my group is not involved in. I will be talking to an NPC and start seeing loot at my feet. It appears when to NPC groups start fighting each other and I happen to be near by, I will get the loot at my feet almost every time.

I mostly encounter this when slaughtering innocent wildlife. I find it kind of annoying, because it seems unpredictable.
