Out of curiosity, why do you only play one gender? I play both, always have (since BG in fact) and never thought twice about it. What motivates you to limit yourself to only one?
To the people who only play one gender: a question...

depends on game mechanics.
if there is no difference from mechanics point of view - i see little difference between male or female.
in the case of DAI - there is no difference at all. In the case of Tera Online - difference is huge.

mmm I'd say because i'd to relate to my character which is why i always play as a male , some might find that boring but i just dont feel it when i play as a female , i tried it once and deleted the toon.
I think a better question is why play as something that doesnt represent you.

Since Bioware is one of the few companies that allow me to play as a woman, I stick with playing as one. That's my main reason.
However, it depends on the voice of the protagonist mostly.
Mass Effect, for example, I love deeply Jen Hale's voice for my FemShep but don't like Meer's. So, for ME, I play only as FemShep.
For Dragon Age, Inquisition is the first one that I adored playing as a M!Inq. The voices were really good. But for the others (Origins, well, no voice at all lmao, and 2, I play only as a F!Protagonist). But, as I said, I play as a woman as most as I can.

I am a guy and I have no desire to play a female character or act feminine or **place default reasoning here**
I do not feel like I am "limiting" myself. When I play a game I want to play and act like I would if I was there.

Who says we're limiting ourselves? I mean, there are tons of games out there that only have white dudes with brown hair and a little bit of stubble as protagonists, but it doesn't seem that far fetched to believe that they each have distinct personalities and stories, right?
Personally, I've been way more excited by female heroes than male heroes since I was a little kid. Maybe it's because I have two brothers, and a dad who worked in a comic book store when I was young, so I was constantly surrounded by awesome heroes, but there were way fewer female characters to identify with.
I definitely don't mind reading about male heroes, or watching shows/movies that have male heroes, but if the female secondary characters are boring or nonexistent, that's a big strike against it. And there are some video games with really interesting set male protagonists, whom I definitely don't mind playing as.
But if I get to create my own characters, they will be female. Some of them will be shy and serious, or loud and wacky, or poor and desperate, or rich and egotistical, but they'll all be women who are the hero of the story. And that's really cool to me.

I always start with a female char 1st, because.. i like women, but if i do a 2nd playthrough, it's a man.

Being a woman I understand a myraid of feminine motivations. Not being a man I don't. I may think I know how a man would act in a certain situation, but I might not be correct, and I'm big on character motivations for decisions. Could just be a thing from years of table top gaming where I've seen dudes play girls and they play them completely stupidly... they're all sex candy bimbo's that can't wait to screw anything, lipstick lesbians, or bull dykes; which left a bad taste in my mouth.
Also, the ONLY option for many of my long years of computer gaming was to play a guy and try to forget that you're running around as a man. I got tired of it so it eventually led to me speaking with my money. If you want me to buy your game you will let me play a female. The end. Some of the fan service has also diminished over the years with some games (more so in the past) and I don't want to put money into something that represents my gender solely as objects for a singular purpose. It literally killed any enjoyment of older games (edited from girls to games) when jiggling boobies that looked like they were balloons about to pop assaulted me every two seconds. I've done enough playing guys and don't want to do it anymore.
This is my personal preference and my reasons. I know they're probably nowhere close to most peoples though and that's cool.

For me, it comes down to something else. If there are m/m romances, then I play as only males (with usually one obligatory female playthrough which almost never gets finished). If there aren't, then I mix up between males and females. Like hyolo and angelofsol, it's because I don't get the opportunity to play as a gay guy in 99% of the games out there, so when I do, I can't really enjoy the game without taking those options.
In the ME series, I played males and females (more than one of each) for the first two games. But ME 3? Never played a female outside of the first scene. In DA 2, I have only played FemHawke once and I never got out of Act 1 with her.
In DA: O, my love of all things dwarf allowed me to get through two female dwarf playthroughs. But in DA: I, I'm really not sure if I can do it. I've created an awesome, bad ass lady dwarf Inquisitor and I've gotten her up to the Hinterlands, but I'm struggling to get her further than that. I just know that Dorian and Bull are coming soon and I can't imagine not playing through one where I can romance them. She might be another 'partial playthrough' gal in the end.

I would not go so far as to say I do self inserts as I am neither heroic nor the epitome of douchebaggery, but I do like to think f my PC's as myself or extensions of myself and the ooportunity to play a female is so rare there is definitely a great disconnect between me and the PC if it is not female and I realized as I got older that if I was going to invest the hours needed to play a game from beginning to end then I would like to see the PC as the representative of myself. Since I always pla through to the end I only play females. Now I do intend to do an effeminate gay male in order to see Dorian's romance but again that is because I want to see me as my PC's. Maybe that is a self insert but I often choose a tone for a playthru and stick to that unless RP reasons make my pc go batshit at certain triggers or points in the story.

Because I'd be extremely detached from a female character since I don't identify myself as a woman.

I almost always play as a male protagonist (if i have an option to do so), that's because i can relate to my character much more than playing as a female.
I've tried few times to play as a female (in both DA and ME), but i usually couldn't finish the game, still i will give it a shot in Inquisition, since i like both female voices (and that is really surprising in my case),oh and also i'm really not a fan of female walking animation i feel more like weird "top model" and not as fighter.

I got my fill of playing females through pokemon and early WoW because in most games the men are hideous.
If a game lets me make a sexy guy, I will play male.

Youtube removes the need ![]()
If I want to see the differences in playing a female character as opposed to a male? Type it in and boom.
I only play a different gender if I really liked that particular game & on a repeat play through.
Prime examples is Fallout New Vegas & Kotor 2

One reason I pick female most of the time due to a better voice actor. ME Jennifer Hale wasn't near as boring as Mark Meer for me so hence why I played femshep and in DA:O well there is no voice lol so that one I played both, DAII I did Fem Hawke as I think there are just less female hero's in stories and I like to envision female's taking a bigger role in helping the world and getting recognition that women can do why more. As for DA:I well becoming inquisitor is just luck (being at the wrong place at the wrong time) so it prolly coulda been either male or woman really. I've just always wanted to make females toons though to make a hero out of them and to show men that women can fight just as well as they can.

If I can choose, I admit that I usually play a female. I guess it's just because I find women to be more attractive than men, from a perspective of character design.
On the other hand, I have no problem playing a male character, but I usually go with that if I have no choice (Wicther, Assassins Creed). If the game is intesting enough, I can have an additional playthrough as a male character after I've already finished it as a female. I did it with Origins. I did it with DA2. In DA2 I have to say I did it only because I wanted to experiment a "naughty" playthrough and it bothered me to see/hear my fem-Hawke delivering Isabela to the Arishok. The different voice helped a lot.
To answer your question, I think there are deep and varied psychological reasons for choosing a certain character. I don't know which one is mine. I would have to go and see a shrink. And send you the bill, of course. ;-)

Reason I play one is I simply don't connect with playing an opposite gender. This is amplified by modern avatars being less a player avatar and more the companies avatar.
In games where roleplaying (dialogue choice etc) is not present, I'll do it and enjoy it (Tomb Raider for example) but where player agency is expected and important, I lose interest very quickly or never get it.

I play a guy only because:
1. I like romance sub plots in my Bioware games and have no interest n romancing female options. Straight or lesbian
2. I have no interest in seeing the story from a woman's perspective
3. I simply relate more to being a guy (obviously) and therefore enjoy the game more.

I play females. I just beat the game as a Male Qunari Warrior , and immediately rolled a female Dwarf Rogue.
But, I will not be as attached to a female character. The immersion and really feeling what the character feels will not be as great.
Out of curiousity, OP, why do you ask? Do you think encouraging gender-bending will work towards fixing some issue with games?

This , all of this ! If I can play myself(gay dude) then I am a happy camper , the only time I got really into playing a female was in Mass Effect .
