I usually play females characters, always in the DA series. In ME, I always play a male Shep. It's just how I prefer it. No excuses, no rationalization, no apologies.
To the people who only play one gender: a question...

We're all people, yes, but women and men are different. This might be an unpopular truth among certain groups, but it's something that most of the population still thinks.
You lost me at 'truth'. There's women in my life who are so much more like me than a lot of guys I know. I guess I do have a degree of apathy towards gender norms, but even so, differences in my experience have been trivial; characteristics, not character. Which I suppose is why there's no roleplay wall for me, because I drive a character from the inside.
I mean, everyone has differences, but there's no inherent certainties for either gender. Averages, maybe, but even that is meaningless because ideologies often dictate standards, and they're typically region specific. So yeah, not buying into the men from Mars, women from Venus rubbish.
There is no spoon.

I only buy games where I can play a female character because I can't identify with a male one at all. The char and motivations are an extension of me, playing a male char just feels 'wrong'.

Is the desire to understand a gripe? Apparently it is, in your view.
What's so hard to understand? Seems more like a desire to argue and feel superior.

No. I actually do not understand people who say it feels wrong to play this or that; maybe I will never understand it? It seems that is where this is going but even still in not understanding it I find it shocking given BW being a great bastion of diversity where all are included but the playerbase does not take part in it? or at least some of them do not.

I come from a very conservative, even misogynistic family background. It makes it difficult for me to trust and identify with men. Anyway that's my explanation, it probably differs for others.

Though I do want to add that even in some of the better games I still find it grating that at times I'm still forced into the dude role. I hated the dance in the Winter Palace.
How does it play out as a female protagonist?

Simply put, I tend to play as a bit of a self-insert, and I have trouble doing that with female characters. I've never been able to finish a female playthrough of any DA or ME game, despite several attempts.

So don't buy it. I'm also not going to be purchasing the "why can't you play as both there's no difference between them?" rubbish; neither will most people. And that's why they only play one gender. The point is that just because you (not you specifically) think something, doesn't mean it's true for other people.
I don't care what you play as, and I won't criticize your choices, so I'm not looking to change anyone's mind about anything. There are some people in this thread who seem to want to convince other people that they're wrong for thinking the two genders are different. That is who my post is directed at.

I can't play Lara Croft because the button-mashing obstacles are for young players with nimbler fingers than I have. Unenjoyable.
Button mashing? I remember qte's in the 2013 reboot, but the button mashing was minimal.

I play male characters often. If I'm going to stare at a characters ass for 40 hours.....
I can't believe I just typed that. In all seriousness if there is no difference between male and female characters then I roll female because I can design better women than men (you should see some of my male Shepards
) but if there is additional content like in ME or DA then I will have a male and female character. I would have missed out on Morrigan and Jack otherwise....

I can't believe how many people actually use that line, though. I might swoon over my male PCs in the cut scenes, but I rarely ever even acknowledge them in that way when in combat or exploring.
The only game that I can think of that I kind fantasize about my PC in a distracting way during regular gameplay is the Saints Row series because you can make a smoking hot guy and dress him in incredibly skimpy clothing (or no clothing) and play the game that way. I've been distracted before.
But in DA or ME? Nope.

Eh Shep had some nice buttshots once in a while. Plus looking at a hot guy in cutscenes is nice.

I was totally put-off by the cave-ins when she's scrambling through the tunnels in the recent Tomb Raider. I had a mouse to use and right-click, left-click over and over as fast as these old fingers could press got older than I am in a hurry. To me it was a stupid way to block me off from what looked like it would be a really good game. I don't like losing sixty bucks over something like that but I have to recognize my physical limitations. I will not knowingly buy another Square Enix single-player title until I am too old to remember that complete loss. I had been actually excited about the title. My experience might have been different had I been playing on a console or using one of those toy XBox controllers, but I wasn't going to go buy one for a game that already (in my view) proved itself poorly thought-out at the hardware level.

Same way it plays out with a male protagonist, you are the "male" lead. I wonder how my spindley elf female as small as she is was able to dip the Grand Duchess without dropping her!

I was raised by a sexist racist homophobic family. I'm gay so I'm not homophobic. I grew up with black friends, so I'm not racist. I guess the sexist still clings to me. I like the idea of a male protagonist because of the relateability, and I can't relate to a woman at all.
Plus, I have(had)2 little sisters, and I don't like to see a woman in pain/being attacked.
But hey, having men chopped to bits, no problem! Heh, it's ok, that is innate, instinctual, all of us, whether we are men or women, gay or straight, feel worse when women feel pain. It is the reason why men can get cut down and chopped down to bits in games and movies and no one bats an eyelash but if that happens to a woman...different story. Hard to get over instincts...

I'm a woman and always play a female character. When I customize my character, I try to make them look a little like me...just an immersion thing I guess.
That being said, if a game does not have the option to be female, it is often a game-breaker for me. Not all games...but most.

I'm one of those who can't understand it either. I have played with both gender my whole life and only recently, from this forum actually, have realised that there is really many people who only play one gender. I can't understand reasoning for that but I guess I don't need. I will just keep wondering why ^^;
