I'm a bit varied. 90% of the time, in a game where I create my character, like this game, I nearly always make females. Being a female myself and having the option is too much to pass up (I am doing a second play through as a male for Dorian though!). If the choices are limited and I find the females a bit lacking, or the voice is off, I may go male. Or if a game is like Fable 2 and the females end up looking like scary ogres who can't seem to stand up straight, I roll a male. I do play many other types of games though, and I don't always have to play as a female. Especially if they're predetermined characters.

So I guess I don't really fit into the "ONLY one gender" title. It might be predominately, but I do have a certain amount of flexibility. It all depends on the game, genre, aesthetics, and voices.

I really don't understand self inserts. I am myself all of the time. Games/books/movies or whatever give me relief from me. Lol. Plus it's weird to think that it's me romancing the pixels? Idk.

I am a writer, however, so I think of my pcs as characters to be written with movements and dialogue.

I'll play either, though DAI has given me the most reason to switch it up and play as a man (hello dorian).

That's pretty much me and my response (except I'm male). It largely depends on the game and lore mostly. I never make any character remotely like me (I'm far too boring and I'd be freaked out playing someone who looks like me). I play all genders, races, and sexual orientations. I'll be the first to admit a male character in an m/m romance feels natural, but I have zero problem making a character outside that, and in fact most of my characters are outside that.

In Dragon Age, I'm completely fine playing as either given the world itself is very heavy with female leads/important characters (Cassandra, Leliana, Morrigan, Flemeth, etc...are far more impactful than Alistair, Loghain, even if male characters have a presence the females often outshine them). My Wardens and Inquisitors are pretty much 50-50 but I'll admit to preferring male Hawke over female Hawke. Nothing against voice or anything else I just happen to like Hawke as a man better.

Mass Effect I'll admit I strongly prefer male over female characters. My 'main/original' is female, but Shepard's animations and design are much more geared for a male character. Though I admit I do like Jennifer Hale's voice a lot.

Elder Scrolls games I can go either way. It really depends on the character type and even personal headcanon/neo-universe story I'm telling (I tend to create several characters per neo-verse).

Diablo 3 I preferred female characters because most of the male characters were hideous. I had a male Demon Hunter and Wizard since they looked good but the rest were female since the males were unbearably old, gnarled and ugly.

MMOs I prefer female because they tend to look much better. Males are either too action figurey (DC Universe Online/Champions Online, guilty as charged) or females just happen to have cooler designs in general (many of the Asian MMOs).

Just my 0.02

First person I always play male because I consider that its me playing that character.

Third person games like DA I always go for girls, I much prefer looking at a pretty girl rather than some guys arse for 100hrs,  playing 3rd person I consider myself like the overseer rather than the main character.

I play female all the time, just because I find them prettier and, as many other have already said, if have to watch for 100+ hours the back of a character then I prefer it is a woman's one.

Having said that if there are male-only romance options that I want to try I sometimes play a male character, but the one that I consider my CANON hero/story is always one of the female characters, to be more precise the "human female warrior's path" through Origins -> DA2 -> DA:I

Usually female, this predates back to an MMO known as Anarchy Online when Female characters were less affected by Latency rubber banding and had a slightly faster run speed.

So it's been a staple ever since

In Dragon Age; I usually do two runs as a man, then one run as woman. Thus far it's always been human (Male noble, Male human mage, Female noble in DAO) but I think I'll make my third character in DAI a Qunari female. Interesting to see that.

In Mass Effect I always use a male Shepard with the default look. The former 'cause I don't like femShep, the latter 'cause the CC is ass.

As a man its pretty easy to play as a female char in dragonage. When I play my male characters I act like how I would act and put myself in my characters shoes.

When I play a woman I set her personality type from the beginning and play her from a third person perspective like I'm watching a movie. It's not sure much what would I do, but would would fem Hawke do etc.

Both are equally as enjoyable and let me play thru games at least twice.

I always play female. I get more enjoyment out of making them. I usually feel more connected to them (likely due to the time I spend creating them). It's easier for me to relate to them in the story, because 'insert self'. I've tried playing males and it just does not entertain me nearly as much (which is the point of games anyway). In a fantasy setting 95% of the time play as an elf, the exception being DAO, because I wanted to be Queen. Humans being too bland and vanilla for me most times. Never play as a dwarf.....but that goes back to being told not to play the dwarf because then I'd spoil it for a friend, and I have not played a dwarf since (it never made sense, but I rolled with it). Most of the time if I don't have the option to play female, I just won't play the game. *shrug* I'll watch someone else play it at that point. I know it closes me off to a lot of games and I never look down upon a game for not catering to my desires, in fact there are some nicely done games I've watched others play. I just won't play them personally. It just goes down to personal preference....

If I get the choice, I always play as a female. When I play as my own gender, my avatar becomes an extension of me, and I am more careful with the things I do and say. My choices mean more, and the relationship I form affects me deeper.

I will play as a male when I feel like wrecking sh*t up, because then I don't care, and I just cause chaos for the sake of chaos. When NPCs react to my male avatar with hostility or disapproval, It doesn't affect me because that's not me. When it's my female avatar, though, I instinctively take those insults very personally. I can't help it.

I mostly play as a male because I'm a dude and I sometimes find it hard to relate to a female perspective in a story. Having said that I do sometimes try playing as a chick and when I have I absolutely loved the experience. My two favorite gameing serise to play as a female are Saints Row (3&4 with Laura Baileys' VO) and DA2. Jo Wyatt is awesome as femHawke.

Out of curiosity, why do you only play one gender? I play both, always have (since BG in fact) and never thought twice about it. What motivates you to limit yourself to only one?

It's just the only thing that I really connect with when I'm inside the character's head. It's also why I only play one appearance. Or rather almost the same appearance. Even the range of personalities are just those I connect with. It's very different if I'm a spectator.

To play the opposite gender in an RPG I need the game to support a different enough personality consistently and clearly. It's why only DA2 aggressive Hawke worked for me. No other RPG.

I love the way people confuse "gender" and "sex".

I always play female because I'm still raw from the years of being forced to play a male protagonist, and I'm heartily sick of that lack of representation of female heroes that went on for so long. I think in most cases, RPGs should give you a choice of playing as male or female, since most have a preference of one over the other. If they don't then they at least appreciate the replay value of having both options to pick from.

Out of curiosity, why do you only play one gender? I play both, always have (since BG in fact) and never thought twice about it. What motivates you to limit yourself to only one?

A couple of reasons:

1.  BioWare is one of the few game companies that allow us to have a female PC and some control over developing the character. I may as well take advantage of it. When I play AC or Witcher, there's no choice and I'm stuck. Typically, you're stuck being a male PC unless you play something like Bayonetta, which I loathed.

2.  I write fantasy and sci-fi fic, and I am in RP writing groups as well. I have a lot of female protagonists and, quite honestly, it's fun to play games as those characters. I have my characters behave, respond, and make choices according to the way I developed them. What's really cool about it is that it helps me more because sometimes I may view a character as being one way and realize, after a playthrough, that the character has a bit more depth than I thought. For example, I play one character who I truly saw as an evil ******, but she's not evil..she's just self-serving, and sometimes it's self-serving to help others. I also play as book characters sometimes (I love playing as Wheel of Time characters, for example) just for the hell of it. It's fun.  :D

That said, if there's an achievement where I have to play a male, I will do so. I had deleted my games in DA:O where I played a male (since you got something for romancing Morrigan and Leliana), but I may go back and redo one of them so I can see how differently things turn out if you romanced Morrigan and had a kid with her. Of course, I say that, but I probably won't.

for me it depends on the voice actor. In DA2 i loved female hawkes voice, Her Sarcastic tone made the game for me, so most of my games where female. For Inquisition i like the British Male voice over the female pair.

For me the answer is the same as some have already mentioned: representation, or lack thereof. I grew up desperate for stories and role models that were even remotely like me instead of telling me implicitly or explicitly that I either don't exist or ain't worth sh*t. There's still not much in that department, nevermind stories and characters that do more than "remotely" resemble me. (Female-assigned but more agender and definitely asexual, loathing gender stereotypes in general and having "femininity" forced on me in particular, craving strong platonic bonds instead of the generic "romance"-focus.) So I make my own, as much as a game lets me.

A lot of people associating their characters with themselves, mistakenly assumes that this is what roleplaying is. That's one of the reasons.

I don't only play one gender, but my females are often single and heroic(selfless). I don't know how to flirt as a woman, and I'm not inclined to experiment either. I remember reading the words of one BW writer where he says(something along these lines) ... it is a role-playing game so why can't you role-play as a homosexual man."(not exactly his/her words). I remember thinking, if it is a role-playing game, then I CAN role-play a heterosexual too, right? Listen, I understand and accept that many game writers want to give you "their" gaming experience they foresaw us playing. But really, sometimes it feels like being shut-gunned into certain situations and positions. In BW's and ArenaNet's case, it feels like they are trying to re-educate the world(or the minds of people).

I'm a male and I will always play both genders if the choice is available. I have no problems connecting with female characters--in fact, for some reason I sometimes connect more with my female characters than I do my male characters. It has never really been much of an issue for me so I've never really thought much about it. It does surprise me a bit to see so many people having such difficulty with that, but I guess we're all just different in terms of how we approach the games we play.

I play all kinds of characters. Male, female, different races. Even played a gay templar in DA:O once. That was quite fun, even if I am straight.

I'm female and I play mainly female characters for the same reason as a lot of other people here: because Bioware makes games where I can.

And I love them for it. Thank you Bioware!

Ahem.

Gender is usually the only characteristic I share with my characters though.  Most of my first runs are with paragon style characters that are far better people than I could ever be, and my second run is usually with a rebel-type, a trope that I also have little in common with in real life (and indeed rarely even admire outside of celluloid  ... go figure).

I will play a male character in a Bioware (or Bethesda) game if there is a reason to do so.  I made a male character for KOTOR so I could play the whole Bastilla storyline like it was meant to be played, and I am just about finished a play through for DA:I with a male who romanced Cassandra. The Cassandra-romance character is ironically the closest thing I have ever had to a self-insert.  wanted to romance Cassandra, who I have a serious girl-crush on, so I made my male character cynical, middle aged, kind of ordinary looking and very pragmatic - as close to an insert as I could, gender aside. So, I guess really I don't consider gender that big a deal.  I just feel, when it comes to Bioware, I should exercise my right to play a female character, because I can so rarely do so elsewhere.
