When given the option, I usually try both. I'm a guy so I usually go with a male PC by default and then female for the second playthrough. Whether I will stick to one or the other for successive plays depends on 2 things: 1) PC voice acting and 2) romance options.

In Origins, with no PC voice actor, I pretty much always play a male now, because Morrigan is far and away my favorite LI there.

In DA 2 I pretty much stick with a female Hawk because of Jo Wyatt's acting. All the romances go both ways so that's less of a factor.

Not totally sure how it's going to play out yet with DA:I. My first Inquisitor was a male romancing Cassandra, who was the most interesting NPC to me initially. But the dialogue bugs out during the love scene with her and the game locks up; I can't get past it even after several attempts. My 2nd and now 3rd Inquisitors are female and I'm preferring the voice acting (both options) over the male's. Add to that Solas and Josie as options for romances for a female Inquisitor and I'm not sure I'll have much reason to play a guy again.

Now if you want to talk about Mass Effect... I'm a huge Jennifer Hale fanboy. 4 out of 5 of my Shepards are female for JH alone, and the ONLY reason I ever play Male Shep is because I specifically want to romance Ashley and/or Miranda. If they were available as LI's for Fem Shep I would never play Male Shep again. On a side note, JH is the reason my main SWTOR toon is a female Republic Trooper.

I am almost always play a female toon in these types of games. I like creating a ridiculously cute female character and then have them be the bloodiest badest assedest gore spattered female I can make them be. I usually try one play through as a male charater, but, I just like playing the female toons.

I don't really care about romance options. I go through them in the bioware games, since it helps you connect to characters.

In games like Dark Souls, or Two Worlds, or Skyrim or Fallout for example, I still play a female toon, usually first play through.

Female. The vast majority of games never give you an option, you're playing as a male by default. So as a result, typical male protagonists usually bore me these days and I don't connect with their plight unless a lot of time is taken getting to know them.

So of course, when it comes to games like Skyrim, Oblivion, ME, and DA, I always take advantage of being able to create a female protagonist. They're not self-inserts, though. Just characters I connect to. My GTA online character is a hyper-feminine simply because I like to see her run amok in heels and crush guys who don't expect it.

I mostly play RPGs, like BioWare games and Bethesda games, but enjoy playing games like Assassin's Creed (though I admit I only liked Ezio...the other assassins kinda suck), The Witcher (which I feel is an action game with RPG elements), Deadpool, CoD (though I'm not that good at co-op because I shoot anything that moves, so getting in front of me is a bad idea), Halo, and Far Cry (which I actually replayed a few times). I love games that let me shoot things and blow **** up. My playstyle is best summed up by the fact that my nephew taught his friends about it during a game where they were trapped in a neverending standoff told them he'd demonstrate an "Aunt Tina" - he got a rocket launcher, marched toward the enemy blowing them to hell and let his snipers back him up. That's pretty much me in a nutshell.

One of my favorite non-RPG games is Half-Life, which had awesome gameplay. Honestly, I'd play games like those more often, and replay them, if I had the chance to play a female protagonist, for a change. I bought Bayonetta because the PC was a female, but the game sucked, IMO. As for Tomb Raider, I didn't buy it because I didn't like the original...all the jumping around and having to jump just right to get where I needed to be hacked me off. I had the same problem with The Force Unleashed, which I otherwise loved....games where you have to jump just right to keep going irk me to no end. Needless to say, I was never a Mario fan. Other games I've loved include Dungeon Keeper ("It's the witching hour!"), The Simpsons Road Rage (I love running over people in that context), and a very old PC game that was either called Road Rage or something similar...I used to play it after driving in traffic and danced with glee when I smashed people between my car and a wall. I don't like GTA, though. Being a pimp and killing cops really doesn't entertain me. Make it so I can go kill drug lords and criminals, and I'd be all over it.

Anyway, I like a variety of games, and would love to see more where I can actually choose to be female instead of being stuck as a man all the time. My nephew swears I'd love Borderlands, but I have yet to try it. Unfortunately, my gaming time is limited, which is why I choose to play games where I get to be female more often than not.

I will say that my absolute favorite game of all time is one where I was forced to be a man...the Star Wars arcade game. I wish I could afford to find one of the machines and put it in my basement. I'd live down there!  :D

So you are the Bonnie Elizabeth Parker type :D

Borderlands 1 and 2 are ok the 3rd is just a rehash version.

I wouldn't mind a CoD version , women fight in the armed forces besides men now anyway. So its only normal to get games representing them

. but CoD mainly sells on its multiplayer. althought in the last CoD you saw your character only like 3 times i think , would be more beneficial to see more of Ivana (one of your companions). They could have reomved the gender references like 'son' which Kevin spacey loves to call you by , and most of the time you wouldn't realise your a man if you didn't listen to the grunting.

I never really thought about it. It's a projection of myself. Since I am a guy. I can't seem myself as a lady. I would no doubt be getting hit on by all the guys in game. There are only two genders. Male and Female. I selected Male because I want to be able to romance some of the ladies. I don't know how they will respond if I'm a female.

I always prefer playing male characters because I identify as a male. I do female playthroughs once I want to try the exclusive romances.

You don't get hit on by the dudes as a female character. Us ladies have to initiate just like you guys do. Unless you count Blackwall telling you he thinks you're a good woman as being "hit on". I don't. :P

But this time I am making a male Quizzy since the LI's are no longer playersexual and I want to try some of the male ones, like Cass and Dorian

You make the characters sound like ice cream and it struck me as funny and I laughed.  Thanks for that :D

Yeah, I am.  :D  In ME1, I played through without using cover at all, so in ME2, I was confused when I couldn't get through the game on insanity until my nephew pointed out that I should use them as cover. That was nowhere near as much fun as just walking in and shooting the place up, lol.

For a long time, ME1 was my favorite game because you could be a vanguard and still use a sniper rifle. I took immense glee in shooting the enemies in the face with my sniper rifle, loaded with high explosive rounds. Their heads would blow up and whoever was next to them would die, too. I loved that!! Shotgun shells to the face were all well and good, but there's something that makes me cackle wildly when I do it with the sniper rifle.

I blame Daggerfall. Daggerfall was the first CRPG I ever bought and I tried to find an image of a male hero I liked. Unfortunately they all looked like the love child of He-Man and a bulldog's butt. So, I played the game as a female. it just became a habit and I've gone female first ever since, though I do eventually play as a guy in most games.

ME3 definitely the female for that scene in the game. Primarily getting real tried of seeing a guy's butt taking up most of the screen, but not hearing your own voice.

Here because of the sword swinging, it would have to be a male inquisitor, and the choices of those additional options are quite limited

HAHAHA

Always the female if there is such a choice. Primarily because most games trend towards a male protagonist and it's boring. Secondary, their animations are easy / lighter or at less it feels that way to me. I made one guy inq for Cassandra and I didn't have much fun moving him around, it feels like I'm struggling with extra bulk tonnage. I got used to it but I can't say I'd be playing male toons if I can play femle toons.

In some games, this is actually a factor. Swtor, for example, when it was discovered male toons couldn't get past a puzzle door because of their bulk. If they're lucky, there'll be a opposing faction player present and already gone through the door to help them or if they have a sith sorcerer/ss with them. This problem is already fixed but it is not unique, it has happened before in other games,

I've just started a male playthrough for the first time in my RPG life, and it feels more like a movie than an emersive game. Still not a bad thing, my fan fics would just end up being a female character that reflects me meeting the Inquisitor instead of me being the Inquisitor. I feel a little less emotionally connected but the male VA in this is so good I'm into it, much better than male Shep. Hail Jennifer Hale!

I usually play as a female simply because it is what I can relate to.

I have played loads of game characters as male and it actually never bothered me if the story interests me I plod on regardless and enjoy it. I played as male shep but felt disconnected slightly because the original look for him was a bit distracting.

mmm I'd say because i'd to relate to my character which is why i always play as a male , some might find that boring but i just dont feel it when i play as a female , i tried it once and deleted the toon.

I think a better question is why play as something that doesnt represent you.

The essence of roleplay, at least for me, can't speak for anyone else, is to NOT represent myself, I see each character, male or female as having their own motivations. I played a lot of rpgs/table tops growing up, and the fun was crafting a story and coming up with backgrounds for a character. If one simply wishes an empowerment fantasy, then of course it makes little sense to play anything but a projection of yourself. I am more interested in seeing a game world through multiple angles.

I love rpg's that give a choice to select a different gender or race. I don't have a problem with playing a male in video games but I prefer playing a female, especially when I have the option of creating their appearance.

I love Jennifer Hale's performance as Commander Shepard. There were moments she just pull off perfection. Especially when tossing some one off a tower :P

I love playing as Kratos in God of War because I feel like a badass Spartan.

Playing as a female doesn't make me any less male than me playing as a male.

I mean if I am playing as Dorian does that make me gay? People need to lighten up and just enjoy whatever fantasy role they are playing.

I play only female characters because I've always chosen my own gender in games (only play female in MMOs too). It's a habit, I guess, and I have no interest in playing a male character (in a game where I can create either sex). I just don't think I would really connect to a male character if I could of had the female option. I tend to make them a kind of avatar of me just with a different name. Three brunette main characters and counting

I'd also like to add that I have no worries with playing a male in games without a female choice (eg: Bioshock, Witcher, etc.) but it helps my immersion when I can relate more to my character.

I do mainly play female but I am not afraid to throw in a guy or two if I want to or if I can. I did finish DAO with a male warrior and am currently working on a male warrior on DAI and a male rouge on DA2. I really was tempted on playing as a male qunari but the voice options didn't sound qunari to me. I really was hoping for one like Iron Bull or Sten that's deep and bad***y because I was going to play him like "let's go kill stuff, f you and f politics" but the two choices didn't sound so deep to me so I tossed him. I am a wee bit race specific where I am not really a dwarf player because I find them hard to design to say he looks cool. Closest one was in DAO where he looked like a dwarven answer to MK's Kano. I like agile races like elf and well balanced like human but do plan on going with a qunari soon.

I just like doing strong female types since I feel strong male types are the norm. Also it's really hard for me to do a guy close to me since at times I wind up hurting my chances with people I like having tag along because of my personal personality.

The only game I really did a character close to me and the way i look was the South Park Stick Of Truth game and I was very happy with my choice picks in that game.

I am a man i have to and want to play a man i can relate to him for one. I think the male voice actors like Mark meer and Nicholas boulton are better and just can not connect to a female.

Also other things like armours look better on a male and the walk/run animation looks fine unlike the females that i just do not like.

I did try femHawke for about 5mins and just could not relate or connect to her and just did not enjoy the game playing a female and did not like the voice.

Out of curiosity, why do you only play one gender? I play both, always have (since BG in fact) and never thought twice about it. What motivates you to limit yourself to only one?

I am a woman and there are so many games where I can't choose to play female characters so when I have a change then I'm going to do it. I have never thought that I am limiting myself. I just prefer play female characters more and I'm happy when I can do that. There are also so many movies where the man is a hero and saves the world and gets the girl so it's nice to experience a story where the hero is a woman for a change. I have been thinking to play male characters before but I have never done that. But I believe that might change in DAI because I want to romance Dorian so in some point I'm going to create a male PC.

Nothing wrong with that. If people want to play as females, go for it. If people want to play whatever gender they want, go for it.

I feel there are those who can feel separate from the avatar they use, and those who can't, among others. I typically go as male in any game that gives me a choice, because I prefer it that way.

Don't see it as a problem, or as a perplexing issue, as others, but I get it.
