I play a straight, white male. So does that qualify me as the devil or something?

...unless you play as a redskinned Qunari, I don't see any such similarity that you imply...

Usually the argument against playing only male is "I play a female cause I don't want to watch a guy's ass all the time". Yeah neither do I buddy, I look at the world, not the character's butt.

I can't get into/care for that character if I play female. It's not immersive for me. It also makes picking choices hard as the opposite gender as I get confused about which dialogue choice fits the character. I guess MMOs are easier compared to games like Dragon Age if you look at it that way. This is also why I stay away from female lead-only games. Thankfully, there are very few of those.

Male PCs were the norm (and only option) growing up, so now I take every chance I get to play my own gender. Pretty sure I may make an exception for Dorian this game, though.

Female here and usually playing with female (romancing a male) character, unless there is a m/m romance available. That is a major factor for me and if a game holds this option, then the playthroughs divide evenly between both genders.

I usually play a female if given the chance, just because I love to see a female kicking ass :D I'm a female myself and as a huge fan of Xena series and stuff *coughs* I always head for a duel-daggers rouge or warrior first. That is, for first playthrought. If I do a second, it's usually a male mage, just to get the opposite experience. And when it comes to Bioware games, also to get to know those characters with you better, that hit on men only.

But as I usually try to do everything in one first long game, it happens not that often. Also, if like in Mass Effect it's the same hero all along, I don't wanna mess with my memory and personal emotional expierience through the game by changing stuff.

DA2 though was huge fun playing someone different, also for the answering system. Many didn't did that, but I actually loved it. The way your answers affected how your character reacted in certain situations after a while, predicting his character was hilerious. My first walkthrough was with a more serious character, somewhere between diplomatic and badass. Very straight. My mage then was quite a sarkastic goof, and it so cracked me up to see the same situations envolve differently, when I thought to know a cutscene already.

It really has to do with how you define "role-playing".

Some like to play a completely different character, become someone else, other like to be the story builders, I like to explore myself, especially in fantasy or sci-fi setting, where you are given an opportunity to live through situation you wouldn't never live in rl. To me it's a great "what if" to explore, by the time I'm done with the game, I don't really feel the need to become someone else, so I don't really see how it is "limiting". Even if I use a male model instead of female, I would still play it like myself, so what's the point? I don't play games that are build with a very specific character in mind, I've always found that to be very limiting.

I've tried this before, too, and it always feels wrong to me. Like, I've tried to do the total jerk run-through and I can never finish it because I feel like...well...a jerk. I don't have too much problem being opposite gender but if I stray too far from my normal personality I feel really disconnected and end up not caring enough to continue.

Yes, same thing happens to me, I might play to a certain point out of sheer curiosity and then give up. The only solution I've found with that is to take on the role of the story builder, so you can detach yourself completely, but the way I see it most games are not build with story building structure in mind (DA sort of ventures into that zone but not quite, the focus is elsewhere) and I never came across a game with truly engrossing story, in game world things are typically pretty tame.

I play both, but increasingly I find myself playing female characters when able.

I think it's mostly because I often DON'T want to play as an extension of myself, which I almost can't help if the character shares my gender. Female characters make maintaining the separation easier.

After another full play through as female ive decided i prefer the male british voice actor for a change.

And boy was iron Bull romance something else. Nice to see a romance that isn't the norm in this type of video game

Eh, I can't hear the voices being a deaf gamer... I just like being able to play as a female. (Mass Effect wasn't even an option until someone gifted me the game and told me that I could be a chick and I was like "Well okay then! I'll give it a try.")

I have no issues playing games with male protags as long as the story is really good. (Still can't finish The Last of Us to my great disappointment because of one part in the game was making me really dizzy. Ever try to dodge clickers while dizzy-- not a pretty sight. ;_; )

It concerns me that so many of those answering think that the opposing gender is so very different that you couldn't possibly know which choices to make. I'd be concerned at any time, given that we're all human beings, with far more in common than not, but I'm especially concerned given that the choices involved are whether to help people, side with mages or templars, or let the world end.

THESE ARE NOT GENDER BASED CHOICES!

What kind of people do you think you're sharing the world with, anyway? Lol.

If a choice is given, I, 99.9% of the time, choose to play a female character because that's what I identify most with, especially in a Bioware games.  I certainly don't mind playing a male character (good quality to have as a female gamer who's played for over 20 years).  The only time I'm not hyped about it would be games where the main protag has women fawning all over him, I just roll my eyes and snort.  I'm glad that the sex scenes in Witcher 2 were optional (poor Geralt didn't get any during my runs  :P).

Male characters mostly because the game won't let me play as a bottle of Mustard. I identify as a bottle of Mustard so every time I play games like this I feel out of place.. I hope for the day that I'm properly represented.
