In the end, gender isn't really essential to me. If I were switched into a woman through some mysterious magic, I would still be me. I would probably be attracted to men as I am now to women, but so what? It's much more important that I can convincingly insert a certain mindset into the character I'm playing. And probably because of the memetic power of stereotypes, I can do that more easily if my character is a woman.

From the transgender folks I've talked to, a change in one's body doesn't change their sexuality.  If they were attracted to men before any transition, then they will still be attracted to men after.  In short, you'd probably become a lesbian.   :P

Sorry to single that out, but I really liked the rest of your post.  As Kain said, well put.

Not so sure.. I feel like my body tells me who I should have sex with. I think if I became a woman I would want to have sex with men.

I self insert in to the main character and so I always play as a male main character in RPG's given the option.

Because you know I'm not a woman so self inserting in a woman would be kind of hard.

You probably didn't mean it, but I'm laughing so hard I'm crying.

Or maybe it's been a long day and I'm kinda of an ass to begin with. :/

I primarily play self inserts, and I am a single gender thus my chars are as well.  -snip-

This is my reason as well, it's also why i tend not to play games with female protagonists.

Well obviously, but all people have a different perspective on sex, I was just talking about myself.

For the same reason I won't let iron bull ravage my male inquisitor. I think I'd curl up into a fetal position every night and cry myself to sleep.

I do play female toons sometimes though but no romance unless it's a female romance.

Srsly I am jelly. Most games I play don't allow me to make a self-insert, not even remotely. Only D&D tabletop.

Another reason I usually play as a female character: I'm bisexual so I tend to play a character that can romance a woman too.

And to add to the discussion around here:

Women and men, generally, do think differently because of their genders. Our genders are socially built so we can live in a society that only accepts two genders (male and female). Our biological sex means absolutely nothing, only to people who believe it means something. I identify myself as a woman, some people don't and, since I have understood the world we live in, the diversity, prejudice and all, I can make decision that men would too but I do not think like a man whatsoever. This is not sexism. It's just the society we live in. We are born with one purpose and the genders have specific roles for it. When we understant this, we see that nothing is black and white but built. If we realize this, we, then, can think like a normal person which would be what an average person would think/say/act, be it a woman, a man or any other gender a person identifies with.

In Thedas gender roles are very different from our own, so in theory one shouldn't be able to relate to both.

I've only played a female character in DAO, so I guess this kinda applies to me... I guess it's because I like to put myself in the shoes of my character... I could still do that with a female character, but it is easier to do so with a male character. I guess that's really about the only reason why. I might do a female playthrough eventually, but I'm not sure if there's any differences when you play female instead of male.

I play both comfortably, but I prefer to play a male because I always role-play myself in RPGs that allow customisation.

It depends on the game, though. I found I played female far more in DA:O because I preferred the customisation for females in that game (I was restricted to console at the time). If a game has IMO ugly customisation options for males, I'll play female. But DA:I, for me, is more aesthetically appealing in terms of male PC options.

Well it's not that there are many games where we can create our character and then self-insert ourselves in them.

Agree about Thedas =/= RL but what do you mean "one shouldn't be able to relate to both"?

Men and women in Thedas are different than man and women in RL ( according to gender ), so how do you relate?

I play characters that I can Identify with so they tend to all have my features and and for the most part colors as well. But my gender isn't what makes me me so I don't put alot of weight on that. I go with what I feel I want to go with for the story I have planned.

Ah, yes. I was thinking about something else completely, sorry for the misunderstanding. I talked about RL overall and not Thedas thus agree with you.

mmm I'd say because i'd to relate to my character which is why i always play as a male , some might find that boring but i just dont feel it when i play as a female , i tried it once and deleted the toon.

I think a better question is why play as something that doesnt represent you.

I am an avid reader and do not limit myself to only books where the protagonist is a male. I see RPG's as a form of story telling. The character isn't me and doesn't represent me. Each play through of the game is the story of a different character with different motivations, morals, and even sometimes gender then me.

Also an avid reader , yet i really struggle with Female protagonists in books. I do not know why , i like to relate to the characters since i started reading very young and imagined myself as the character. And thats come over to gaming. while games like Dragon age i might 'experiment' but usually i tend to stick with males

For me, it comes down to something else.  If there are m/m romances, then I play as only males (with usually one obligatory female playthrough which almost never gets finished).  If there aren't, then I mix up between males and females.  Like hyolo and angelofsol, it's because I don't get the opportunity to play as a gay guy in 99% of the games out there, so when I do, I can't really enjoy the game without taking those options.

In the ME series, I played males and females (more than one of each) for the first two games.  But ME 3?  Never played a female outside of the first scene.  In DA 2, I have only played FemHawke once and I never got out of Act 1 with her.

In DA: O, my love of all things dwarf allowed me to get through two female dwarf playthroughs.  But in DA: I, I'm really not sure if I can do it.  I've created an awesome, bad ass lady dwarf Inquisitor and I've gotten her up to the Hinterlands, but I'm struggling to get her further than that.  I just know that Dorian and Bull are coming soon and I can't imagine not playing through one where I can romance them.  She might be another 'partial playthrough' gal in the end.

This is me 100%, down to the ME thing. I played ME1 and ME2 with femShep and had an absolute blast even more so than with male Shep, but by ME3, it's always back to playing as a male. In DAO, my lesbian character never went past Redcliffe, in DA2, I couldn't even get femHawke inside Kirkwall (also due in part to the terrible female running animation), and in DAI, my female elf only got as far as the Storm Coast to pick up Bull. Basically, I've yet to see a female only romance in the DA series to this day and the funny thing about it all is that I tend to vastly prefer many of the female only romances to the gay ones, yet I still feel I have to do them since I'll never experience such romances anywhere else. Even in games with terrible romances like in Dragon's Dogma, if there is an option for gay romances I will always play as male.

On the flipside, if a game doesn't have any gay romances yet has female PCs, I have absolutely no problem playing as them and will always play as the female PC at least once (and I even tend to prefer them over the male character) just to experience something new, with Fire Emblem Awakening and Pokemon being prime examples.

Same for me. Reason why I'm sticking with Bioware no matter how frustratingly buggy their games are :P

I did play a female in DAO though... to romance Alistair... dude was too yum, I had too lol. Still din't finish that pt. Other then that, I only play male chars, and while I don't "identify" with the chars I make, I actually like to rp them as distinct personalities and whatnot (I also always rp them as gay... for variety xD ), I do tend to make my "main" pts with choices I would do. So I could identify with them as some sort of mini-fantasy game. It's fun.

Oh and the ME series. Hated the stupid "we imagined Shepard as str8" nonsense in 1 and 2, but still rped a gay Shep, pining for Kaidan... :P Then ME3 came... with Kaidan...  I loved his character from start, hated I coulnd't get sexy times with him (rolled a female to romance him... pff lol), and then there he was... Awesome!
