Also an avid reader , yet i really struggle with Female protagonists in books. I do not know why , i like to relate to the characters since i started reading very young and imagined myself as the character. And thats come over to gaming. while games like Dragon age i might 'experiment' but usually i tend to stick with males

The first book I ever read was The Lion, The Witch, and the Wardrobe when I was 8 years old. The primary protagonist is Lucy so I didn't imagine myself as the character but imagined myself watching her story unfold through her perspective. Which maybe why I don't self insert when reading or playing games.

Have no clue how woman is related to the rest of the song.

Oh it doesn't really, your post just reminded me of that song and I figured I would share.

Also, and this is sort of unrelated, but I think I am starting to see a correlation between the number of emoticons a poster uses and how "feminine" they tend to be or identify themselves as. It seems large numbers of emoticons denote femininity. Rather interesting.

You know any?

Well there are the usual games like...

-most BW games

-almost every fallout game

-The Elder Scrolls games

-KOTOR2

-Divinity Original Sin

There are probably more but I'm the kind of person that forgets games quickly.

I never self-insert when playing these games, so gender in terms of how I might relate is kind of irrelevant for me. But then, I have a fascination with heroines in fiction, ever since the first time I saw Ellen Ripley in Alien when I was 5 years old (nightmares for weeks lol), so given the option, I'll typically go for them. I try to insert a certain mindset for the character to create a hero I'd like, but it's just never me per se.

Was the Belgariad for me , my mother loved the books so she passed them on to me , and it to this day the books i set all other fantasy books standards so that might be why i prefer male protagonists.

I'm a man.

I love playing as both male and female.

However I have preference for playing as a female.

One of my biggest criticisms of South Park Stick of Truth is that you can't play as the female sex.  :crying:

Otherwise great game. :wizard:

I feel there are two approaches being offered in this thread, those that like to be the main character of whatever game they're currently playing and those that don't. Either they prefer to create their own characters or they simply would rather be someone else when given the chance. Personally it's the second one for me. I'm me every day in real life, I don't want to watch me run around the Dragon Age world. (Not that they give many options for bumbling and socially awkward in role playing games anyway.)  I don't see the protagonist as me, and I don't think a Hero that acted like I would could be a particularly compelling character.

So yeah, I'll play males or females of any sexuality in RPGs, even though I'm a straight male in real life. I'm very much looking forward to romancing Dorian on my next play-through.

Growing up I was used to playing as a guy only because there wasn't much choice in the matter, so if I'm given the option I will almost exclusively play female in games like Fallout, Skyrim and MMOs. With BioWare games since there's the additional exclusive story content (romances), I may play as a guy to experience one of the female romances, like Jack from ME2. I'll probably make a guy Inquisitor later on to try romancing Cassandra/Dorian.

There's also the vanity/aesthetic factor to it. I love dressing up and female clothing/armor has always appealed to me far more than guy stuff. :3

I don't understand the limitation tbh.

Tons of guys play female characters in MMOs, myself included, and I wouldn't avoid a single-player game simply because the protagonist was female. Yet I haven't seen many women that will play a male character without complaint. Some women avoid games with only a male protagonist entirely. And in all my years of playing MMOs and meeting people I raided with only 1 woman who played a male character.

I roll whatever looks cool as far as MMOs go, or whatever storyline I want to experience in a game like DA.

I know a few female friends who've gotten legendaries for free from some dudes in Guild Wars 2 , yes it sucks that we guys get nothing for free lol

The bad generally outweighs the good.

Wait what?People play female characters in DA:I?

But...But...how can you romance Dorian if you play a female character?

:(  :(

We have Cullen

Truthfully Dorian is the only reason why I would play a male in this game.

Someone else mentioned that there's plenty of opportunity to play as default hetero white, bearded brown hair guy in tons of other games. I have to agree. There's just not a lot of opportunity to play as my own race or gender, let alone have a semi decent portrayal of it without revolving around old stereotypes and tired tropes.

I'm much more likely to find or be able to play as a pretend creature than who I actually am in real life in a video game, so when the chance arises I take it. It's much more novel/unique game play for me to be someone like myself.

Unless I'm playing an MMO. Then I'm a dude who won't be using voice channels.

I read a study somewhere that agree's with your statement. I think its the fact that the gamer stereotype started off as a lonely virgin nerd and that we made female characters to compensate :P but thats my opinion.

Some people just play female char's to stare at the Booty..can't find fault with that when you spend hours playing a character

In general, I prefer female characters.  So few games allow you to play one, and even fewer have it influence the story (I don't mind if a game is completely gender neutral, but often the game sort of treats you as 'male' even if you're playing female)... so for Bioware to have being female have different romances, reactions, and the like, it makes me happy.  So I overwhelmingly play females in Bioware games.

Having said that, my second playthrough was male to see the differences (and romance pretty pretty Cass), and I'll likely play male again for pretty pretty Dorian.

On the other hand, in say, MMOs... save for SWTOR with it's romances, I always play female (save for in a very few games where there are a lot of jerkasses who harass you).  In Skyrim, where it makes no difference one way or another, I play female (though at least my beloved Vilja acknowledges it).  In Pokemon?  Female.  (Though that's one of the games where sometimes you get treated as male- a lot of random flirting by females, which, I mean, I don't mind, but no guy really ever flirts with you till Black/White Ferris Wheel...)

So, um, really it's just Bioware/Obsidian and the other few developers who follow their lead that I play a male character for, if I have the choice.

They're just characters in games to me. They're not me and they don't represent me in any way, so I've never had any issues playing either.

I always do first runs as male. Be it single player or MMO. Then female if I feel like it.

I think it all started way back, rolling female in my first MMO ever, and got hit on by a gentleman of 12 years of mental age in the starting area incessantly. I rolled male for my MMOs ever since.

mmm I'd say because i'd to relate to my character which is why i always play as a male , some might find that boring but i just dont feel it when i play as a female , i tried it once and deleted the toon.

I think a better question is why play as something that doesnt represent you.

The way I see it, as an overweight dude who wears glasses, there is no video game hero who can represent me, save for a Saint's Row character.

This! But its a problem for guys too one time in an MMO I got a really annoying girl that kept following me around and asking for my gear if she gave me pictures  etc she actually followed me for 3 hours! She was very dedicated to not playing the game it seems.

Its not about motivation, but rather the lack of motivation to play the opposite sex in a rpg game. Just can't imagine myself filling the shoes of the opposite sex.

I can't connect with a male character. There is just some part of me that doesn't want to help the character succeed, especially when the male character is particularly ugly or brutish or whatever.

There are lots of games I just can't get into because the protagonist is an ugly/brutish/repulsive male character. For example the Witcher. Just can't get into it.

I find the additional disconnect of playing the opposite gender helps me role play.  Enough so to where I have a hard time making a choice i wouldn't make in real life as a male character.  That and the chat wheel making my dude say things I'm not trying to bugs me less as well with the extra distance.

I'll sometimes cross the lines to see content gated behind a gender wall but not often.

Its just a preference, and the fact that I can't make a decent male if my life depended on it (I've been trying so I can romance Dorian, but I've been failing... horribly). Also, most RPG games I play you are stuck as a male protagonist, so I like the ability to play as a woman. And being a female, I like playing as one.

I've never been much for doing several playthroughs so, I usually play a female since I am one and can relate to being one.
