I'm not saying Dragon Age has to be this, but I dream of the day an RPG will match the realism of some modern day first person shooters. It seems there is a gap here that will never be filled. I would like to see a fantasy RPG not be afraid to do the following:

Not every character has to be the same level.

Like in Lord of the rings, Gandalf had to be way higher level than the other characters, it would be cool if say Solas was 5 levels higher than the other characters, Varric kept some experience from Dragon Age 2, etc. The main character could catch up to them over time.

Characters Die

I've always liked this, even when I liked the character a lot, if they died in a meaningful way, it was always cool to me, This is just one of the reasons Game of Thrones is so great

More realistic connection to game equipment and environment

Crafting armor takes time. You could easily say in your head, "Ok a week just went by instead of getting the armor instantly" but I would prefer if this time was tracked in game. Request armor to be made and there is a time tracker or something like that, when it is done you can go collect it.

Ore isn't just laying around and you can go pick it up, you need the proper equipment and time to get it.  One of my favorite things in Red Dead Redemption is how they took the time to make skinning animals a cool and realistic animation. It really did tons for immersion.

More realistic character reactions and damage

I would love it if a character could get injured to the point that they had to sit it out for a while. Perhaps they have a broken leg, or just need extra time to heal. If Iron Bull falls in battle, I would like to get some reaction to that happening instead of him just popping up after the fight is done and chugging a potion and move on like nothing happened.

More comments from the party when the enemy is spotted. They could give there assessment of the situation, like saying we should prepare, or flee, etc.

Characters do more than just stand around

When I rest at camp, after the fade, I would love to see the characters doing something, sitting, cooking, etc.

It would also be nice to be able to talk to them in camp just like you can in skyhold, I know it would have to limit the options as many cut scenes take place in skyhold, but at least let me talk to them.

The best examples I can think of are Red Dead Redemption and Last of Us. The way they handled NPCs and everything else is amazing and I would love to see things done in those games done in a fantasy RPG. In Last of Us, the main character is so wounded that he is out of it for months and you get to play Ellie, its one of the best parts of the game. I am sure there are things a lot of the military first person shooters that could be done in a fantasy game too, but I don't play those much, so can't give any examples.

Basically just saying, the more "game like" stuff reduced, the better.

Who are We? And do this We as a whole want a gritty realistic RPG.

I can only speak for myself and I prefer High Fantasy RPG's over Realistic RPG's any day of the week.

Then why play games at all? Why are you on a gaming forum instead of going outside and living life?

Until RL gives me a fluffy tail that allows me to fly or spells that allow me to levitate; I refuse to go out there.

Not having all the characters the same level is extremely easy to do. You just need exponential XP progression (like AD&D) so characters that fall behind can catch up.

OP, I think you'd have to go with some kind of F2P MMO for some of those ideas.

I can't see anyone paying $60-70 for a game, and then being willing to have their character sit out for a week with a broken leg. Even then, monetizing the idea would almost certainly end up giving players the ability to "buy" their way around the recovery, somewhat negating the "realism" associated with it.

Don't get me wrong, if such a thing existed, I'd probably try it. Sort of a Dark Souls "don't screw up or the consequences are very severe" way of playing with other players would really amp up the tension (and would make healers sooooooooooooooooooooooooper popular, and I happen to like playing healers. smiley_innocent.gif)

But I don't think I'd be willing to pay much for the experience, and I suspect that the reason games aren't made that way is based on the fact that there wouldn't be much expectation that many people would.

You could attach a drone to it. They're amazingly affordable nowadays.

I hate the button mashing in Witcher and could never really get into the protag.

Well, of course you would. Button mashing in witcher games drops combat lifetime to about 3 seconds.

It the first game it most certainly did not, God, that was bad combat alright. Loved the improvements in 2 though.

I also don't consider the Witcher series and RPG series because of its set protagonist whom I can't identify with and who keeps changing personality in every game.

That's not to say that it's not a good series, it is. I just don't get the CDPR hype or the RPG messiah hype that series is getting at all. *Shrugs*

I'm guessing that Pillars of Eternity is going to be pretty much what you want.

Pretty soon he will be asking for perma-death on DA.

This is a fantasy game, not a shooter

Those two statements have absolutely nothing to do with each other.

In fact it makes me believe DA is your first and only RPG.

Other than characters not standing around, I would not enjoy any of those things.

all I want is a game where the atmosphere is cozy as hell. a story that'll lure me in and keep me gripped throughout it's twists and turns. characters that are either brotherly/sisterly to you minus one love interest. a combat that is simple during easy fights, yet once a boss battle or harder enemies approaches you gotta get tactical..and an ending that'll leave me satisfied with the game...

is this too much to hope for?

So never OP. Your dream game will be left out just like my dream game..

Oh well, "gritty and dark"...everything has to be that nowadays? It's Game of Thrones, isn't it? Oh damn George, you made everyone wanting things to be hopeless, weddings turning foul, main chars that really have potential for storytelling die before they seem to become interesting, people get shot while sitting on the privy, lots of nudity and ... a plot that so far JUST DOESN'T ADVANCE!!! FINISH THE NEXT BOOK, GEORGE!!!

Ahem, sorry about that...oh yes, gritty and dark. Very important, very important, yes indeed...get on with the thread...

There's games like this out there dawg.

You can find them if you go looking. For instance, Broken Age. Bioware ain't gonna be makin' them.

I don't think you'll get the vast majority of the items listed in this thread from BioWare. Living, moving characters, perhaps.

I get a kick at how gamers toss 'gritty' and 'dark' around as pejoratives, when in fact the IPs that are like that bring more to the table than just trying to be edgy. Anyway, Kingdom Come looks to be an interesting experiment in realism and a fresh take on a medieval setting.

Characters Die

This is just one of the reasons Game of Thrones is so great

Exactly.

No more of these immortal pansie fights.  Hokey console games.  Resurrect, guzzle potion, bee grenade, rift nuke, thousand cuts, I win.

Bloody hell.

Even these Choose Your Own Adventure books from the 70's and 80's had your character die.  You were basically the owner of your character's destiny. Sudden plot twists, the sense of discovery — and death. So much death.

And these books were for kids.

They need to turn these books into games. With much more depth added to them.  They'd be very successful if done correctly.

They sold more than 250 million copies.  People want this stuff.  They love the risk of death.

As long as Bioware doesn't make them.  They'd cheese it up with their resurrect ability.

Well, and having interesting chars die can also shoot an author in the knee quite easily, if he has no real interesting replacements. I am afraid that GoT/ASoIaF might struggle much more with certain persons gone that drank too much wine/got shot on the privy. You can already feel how King's Landing is much more dull without them. And it's still open to see if a certain one-eyed pirate can make up for the lack of interesting antagonists in the future.

As far as death goes: In BG1 and 2 chars could die. My cleric revived them, and if it was the cleric, I reloaded, because going to the temple was usually such a drag. Modern games just spare me that.

But then its also true; as Death once said: I AM DEATH, NOT TAXES. I ONLY COME ONCE!
