I could imagine DF being effective in coordinated team. From my experience, very few players in PUGs will lead mobs to my (mis)aimed Fire Mine for example. I stand on the mine and they are 2m from me fighting.  Hello? Boom! here .. Nah. I am not sure if its because they want the kill or do not realize what is going on, but I had similar stuff happen with DF - even if I used it properly others did not.

I tried it for close combat. My build was largely the same as Penguins except that I traded Fadestep for Mindblast. I would pick a warrior, stick to him/her, barrier up, mindblast flankers and if **** hit the fan I'd pull DF. For a mage it's a nice turn in the pace of gameplay. I nominate mindblast as the mental headbutt - it's as close as it gets to Krogan action.

Perhaps that is where I went wrong with DF - pace of gameplay.

Again, the problem with DF is that it suffers a delay before enemies will be affected by it, if at all.  Even in the video you can watch enemies that are clearly inside of it walk right out of it.  While the description for Stasis Field does mention how damage enemies will be able to move again, the enemies in the video are just walking right through it.  Even Veilstrike is far more consistent as it will cause Sleep when combined with Chain Lightning.  Likewise, Static Cage prevents all but certain boss types from leaving the area.  There is no inconsistency in how these other skills work, which is why Stasis Field is so bad.  If the skill worked immediately when it was placed I would absolutely love it.  Instead it just leads to me taking damage from attacks while inside or having enemies simply walk out of the area.  I'm sorry but that is simply not good enough in Perilous (for Threatening having a good weapon is all that matters).

Just like barrier.

I normally open up with chain lightning, followed by veil strike, and it puts most mooks to sleep.

I tried this...wasn't too happy with people waking up the mooks right after, and that it takes quite a bit of mana.

Upgraded veil strike costs 20 mana.

In perilous, I use DF in a defensive way : if I see one or several rogues in the pack, I will just cast it preventively around me and my nearby teammates, and they will freeze as soon as they enter it. It works wonders against archers as well, as it stops arrows when they enter the field. Fade Step is there to avoid melee damage in worst case scenarios.

If you're going to use DF offensively, it's best to do it with a tank in your party. He taunts, they gather around him, you freeze the lot. I do miss the time when DF would freeze the demon commander though.

But I understand why you wouldn't like this skill. As you say, it has its faults.
