So, after well over a hundred hours of gameplay, I've come to the conclusion that I just flat out don't enjoy playing any class/build other than a dual-wielding assassin rogue. I just love their high DPS output--my first rogue in this game had 388 AoE DPS with her mainhand dagger and 318 AoE DPS with her offhand at end-game--and their multiple stealth abilities make them surprisingly survivable. I've tried on multiple occasions to play as a mage or warrior, and I just can't seem to get into it. Mages seem so much weaker than the past two games (I enjoyed playing mages in those ones), and...well, I've never been a huge fan of warriors in these games. If anyone has any suggestions that might help me get over this weird mental block, I'd appreciate it.
Enjoyable build suggestions?

I've had the chance of playing both Mages and Rogues for the first two games, and I understand where the appeal of Rogues come from. They are just machines! I did a Rogue Assassin/ Duelist in the first game, and I did not have trouble breezing through Nightmare. Since my Hero died during the final battle, I had to start a new character for DA:A. I created a Mage that I turned into a Tank using the Arcane Warrior specialization. Since that campaign was shorter, I had some hangovers using the Mage, so I decided to give it a go on the second game. To my disappointment of course, as Dragon Age 2 did not live up to the legacy its older brother. It's a game that had good intention of giving combat more fluidity but it ended up half baked. So just like you I've never once used any kind of Warrior, save for the occasional switching during combat tactics. To me they were just these living walls that I had to place in between the enemy and my mages or archers.
What didn't appeal to me with the class is all the argument of being a Tank or a Damage Dealer. (Or what some would say "Primary Aggro Holder" and "Secondary". Which is the same banana really) So I looked at the upside of that situation. I wanted to break that mold. It's not a new concept but the idea of trying build that kind of warrior that doesn't fall into that pitfall of an argument post a challenge for me. I've played Warrior classes outside of the series, and I've always thought that I don't have to be a certain way to enjoy my play. This thinking was pretty much inspired by my experience in Guild Wars 2, where I can practically build my Guardian from scratch. By definition, that class was supposed to be the Tank or rather they had more defensive utility than the other Soldier class. But the game was well designed for me to rework my class constantly to fit the needs of my regular party.
Anyway, what I'm trying to say is that Dragon Age Inquisition promises that same kind of flexibility when it comes to a Warrior. You can choose from two weapon styles. And three specializations which more or less have some form of dictated role. Defensive for Champion/ Support for Templar (But has huge burst possibility)/ Reaver for Suicidal Damage Dealing. Similar to Rogues who have both Bow and Daggers, you get to mix these guys up to make the warrior of your choice. You can be a Rock or a Paper Soldier that deals serious paper cuts.
If your flavor is really high damage, I'm pretty sure there is a certain design for a Warrior that will tickle your fancy. The limits of which is up to you imagination and how much you enjoy your design. It doesn't have to be the thing that all Warrior players go with, it just has to fit what you want.
Sorry for the lengthy post but I hope this helps you out.

Thanks for the great reply. I may give warrior another try. My main issue is finding a balance between DPS and defense. Two-handed warriors deal massive amounts of damage, but they also seem to take massive amounts. It's part of the reason I never really use The Iron Bull. My potions are just gone if he's in the party. Admittedly, part of that is due to Bioware giving us watered-down tactics in this game, but that's a discussion for another time. As for mages... They removed so many spells, or moved them into specializations (which, of course, you can't access until level 10), that I honestly have no interest in the class. And while knight-enchanter might be interesting, it certainly won't stack up to arcane warrior in any way, shape, or form.

You can check out KineticGTR on Youtube. His 2H Reaver is designed carefully to have defensive utility. What's nice about his build is it's applicable to your AI buddies. (Iron Bull) He also has a pretty good Tanking build. Thanks for the great reply. I may give warrior another try. My main issue is finding a balance between DPS and defense.
Inversely, you can check out BOYvsVIDEOGAME for his "Shield Reaver". It's a great example that a good balance can be done. He used the build to Solo Nightmare so I would think it would work for a party set-up where you have more combos. Personally this is what I'm gunning for sans doing Solo. While killing a dragon alone seems badass, managing a party seems more challenging for me.
I don't have links to any 2H Templars or Even a 2H Champion. I don't even know if 2H Champion is even workable.

So, after finally sitting down and watching KE gameplay videos, I've decided to give mage another chance. KE actually looks like it might rival or even surpass AW. It's just a matter of struggling through those first ten levels as a squishy nuker who takes damage when someone sneezes in my direction. Being able to effectively run away from enemies would be nice (since mind blast doesn't seem as useful as in the past two games), but I guess Bioware thought we'd love to move like snails in active combat...

There is an ability in the Winter tree (fade step maybe?) that allows you to essentially teleport out of danger, or if you're a more adventurous type, into danger. Nothing like nuking away and seeing an enemy closing in on you, only to teleport away and continue nuking.

True. I barely look at that tree. Now that I think about it, enemy casters seem to use that (or something like it) a lot. Thanks for the tip.

KE was actually my first choice, drooling over gameplay videos. I decided to bail out as I realize that I can actually play that build with Vivienne if I wanted to. For some tips, you can again check out KineticGTR's page. He has a very detailed approach to it, using Vivienne as his example.
From the most I've read, KE is really powerful. It is often compared to the AW of DAO, but some would say it's a totally different animal. Soloing a dragon on nightmare with a KE seems really flashy. I just hope you don't get into the mentality that you can breeze through the game with just one button, as a lot of guys here would say. I'm sure it's a bit exaggerated but KE gets to be that powerful late in the game.
I guess good luck on your new run! If you do want to check out warriors, you can just easily switch to any of your pals, and you could definitely experiment with their builds. One thing about KE is it can become unkillable, so you can toy around your party specs. ![]()
