First off I need to throw out the disclaimer that I am (like all humans) biased.

I loved Dragon Age Origins and it's system of conditional companion skill execution.  I was seriously disappointed in the lack of conditional control over companions ability with Inquisition.

With that said I am having trouble getting the companions to do what I need them to do in battle.  Right now the only solution I can see is only allowing companions to have 1-3 skills available at any given time.  Other wise I find that they throw out skills too often and do not have enough back up stamina/mana to keep defenses up.

Primarily this is for the mages.  I basically have them only use Barrier and Lifeward.  That's it, otherwise they throw barrier randomly to the closest character (even though I specifically have them defending my main character) and then cannot use it again during most battles that last longer than 30s

Any advice?

The AI is good with casting barrier on the person in the group that has the most threat, however, that will be overruled by health levels. I suggest always keeping those you don't want barrier cast on topped up on health.
