Does higher difficulty level give better chance at good loot?

I'm thinking about changing from Hard to Nightmare (gulp!) and I was just wondering if anyone knew if having a higher difficulty level gives a greater chance of finding better look (rares, unique items etc).

I am currently playing on Nightmare and really don't see much of a difference with the drops.  The best gear is done from crafting I find, for I was having issues with one of the primary plot missions near the beginning and abandoned it crafted gear and walked through it.

In one of the pre-release videos, they said no difference. They didn't want to nullify the nightmare challenge by improving the drops.

No, it doesn't. Also, do not look forward to getting any real loot. This game is designed around crafting, loot was just shoved in as a mean to keep things interesting, but in the process they forgot that in order to make loot worth while the actual loot has to be good. You might get 2 or 3 decent Purple items early on, but that's about it. They messed up and they know it. I just hope they learn from this mistake and improve on it in the future.

This might explain why my level 20 warrior hasn't had a single decent item drop from any of the bosses or dragons I've defeated.  It's actually pretty annoying that I've killed a bunch of dragons and my warrior hasn't benefited one bit from it.  I'm still carrying around a level 11 hand axe because I haven't come across any better weapons that are close to my character's current level.

BioWare needs to fix this.  Make the loot drops from the bosses/dragons actually decent.  And make them relevant to your character.  I've killed half a dozen dragons and all the purple weapons that have dropped weren't for my character's class.

You can always use the dragon materials to make some high level gear instead

Best way to get good loot is save before you run into containers (keep your distance..because I think they won't refresh if you save too close). Save near the doorway of a room or whatnot. Then keep reloading the save and run to the containers until you get something good.

You need a lot of free time for this btw. :P Sometimes it takes awhile.

Nope. They said it would defeat the object of playing on higher difficulty if you got better equipment that then made the game easier.

Having trouble getting good schematics, but I guess I need to get further along in levels or story...

This is pretty much it.

This game has some of the most pointless loot I've seen in an RPG. I was getting lvl 10-14 items as a lvl 23 Warrior. You're meant to craft more than loot.

Loot does have the helpful use of salvaging upgrades and using them the gear you do have. Very helpful for party members you don't often use.

Crafting is cool and everything but I don't think it should be a substitute for finding good gear. They build these big beautiful maps and fill them with crafting materials? It's an action rpg ffs and the best i can hope for is to find some masterwork materials or schematics? What makes map exploration fun for me is the idea that I just might find that dagger of assassination, sword of destiny or that armor of the brave. Skyrim has crafting but you don't have to rely on it to find good weapons and armor. Hopefully they do something about it in a future patch.

Distance doesn't matter. Some just don't restock. I routinely do this standing right next to the boxes in question. it's the only way I managed to get any usable schematics.

Thanks for the replies guys. I'm not that bothered about no better loot on nightmare (although it would have been nice - the excuse about better loot making the game too easier doesn't make sense - just take the better loot into account when balancing the nightmare level) but your points re loot drops in general being bad is rather depressing. Oh well, hopefully they'll patch this.

Agreed.

In fact, that's one of the rewarding things about defeating these big, fearsome dragons -- the assumption you're going to get some awesome loot for doing so.  Yet, you don't.

BioWare has made getting powerful armor and weapons tedious by making it so you have to craft them, because the loot drop items aren't very strong.  The stores are largely useless as well because they rarely have anything decent in stock (found a "dragon hunter" greataxe in one, but that's about as good as it gets -- and my character doesn't use two-handed weapons so it's useless to me anyway).

I guess they figured that crafting would be enough to satisfy, for some maybe, for me no.

You'd think they could've made some level dependent loot. I mean when you find legendaries in Diablo 3 they're not crazy OP for the level you are when you get them. Blizzard was also smart enough to increase the frequency of the legendary drops.

The problem - and I said this pre release - is RNG loot. The loot is tied to the area level which lots of exploration will have you over level. So you won't get epic loot for your level. Instead it will be 500 daggers 8 levels below you.

How is something like that an oversight though? I mean did they not think people would want to explore every inch of the maps they were on? I guess it must just be me but I like exploring a whole map before moving on to another, I suppose its that thought that I might miss something or an encounter might happen or whatever.
