Please tell me it exists in Thedas... can mages at least use magic somehow to prevent unwanted crotchfruit?

Since elf + person of any other race = child of whatever race the non elf parent is, I think my elf would die if she had to birth a qunari baby.

Or my dwarf (though she lacks magic). Now that would suck.

That's actually not 'any other race', that's Humans specifically.

On the other hand - I doubt the history knows much cases of elven girls seriously messing with the dwarven or Qunari boys.

I don't think we had them mentioned in the lore....before DAI I mean.

Wynne says something vague about birth control when talking to Alistair about her son.

The better evidence that it exists is the size of the families we see. There are few characters with more than two or three siblings, and families of ten don't seem to be standard in Thedas. That could also be because of massive infant and childhood mortality, but we haven't seen any evidence of that. (There's no evidence that the Couslands or the Guerrins or the Hawkes or the Trevelyans have three or four dead children as well as their lives ones, for example.)

I can't recall ever seeing a child in a DA game.  They seem to be missing entirely.

Oh, BSN....

I don't think this is the weirdest thing someone has made a thread about today. It could be so much worse!

Connor? Amalia? Cricket? Kieren? The kid your mabari retrieves in the Denerim marketplace? There are plenty of children hanging around some of the areas in DAO as well, although not as many in DA2 or DAI.

That's very true. If this is what starts us out I don't look forward to what the day brings.

Sounds like an idea, but I don't think coat hangers have been invented yet in DA.

Wait...what now? What about Feynriel, the quite clearly half-human half-elf in DA2?

If I hadn't known he was elf blooded, I wouldn't have guessed that he was. He looked like more or less like a normal human.

To be honest, there has to be some sort of contraception, just think of all the bards and their job description...

"Dialogue between Wynne and Alistair hints at some form of birth control or abortion being readily available to mages, perhaps to discourage the propagation of magically gifted children."

"Wynne mentions that mages seldom have babies by accident because "there are ways to prevent it". However, considering that Wynne herself had an "oops" baby once, their contraception methods aren't 100% effective. (Fans like to speculate on how, exactly, this works. Some note that there's actually a spell called "Barrier"...)"

"Interspecies relationships are possible, but frequently frowned upon by most societies. The fertility rate between two parents of different race are very low compared to that of the same race. In particular, elves are bound only to produce elven children with their own kind because their offspring with a human would be Elf-blooded, appearing physically human. Similarly this also happens with dwarves. Subsequently elves mating with humans is considered traitorous by the rest of their kind and any elf who conceives a child with a human risks expulsion from their community.

A child between a dwarf and a human is a half-dwarf, which would be taller than dwarves but shorter than humans. Such children are extremely rare, as dwarves are comparatively few in number and those living underground are reclusive to outsiders; mating with other species would bring great shame to the dwarf as well as their family. In addition, the dwarven fertility rate is very low due to the close proximity to the darkspawn taint for many generations.

Nobody in Thedas has any idea what a qunari half-breed might look like, since the Tamassrans prohibit interspecies mating among qunari and there is no evidence of interbreeding between Tal-Vashoth and other races."

Yeah, Lelliana would have had a lot of kids before she met the warden, if they didn't have contraception.

Even outside of magic, there is the possibility of herbal contraception. As I recall, there was a plant in Roman times that could be taken to prevent conception. The Romans drove it to extinction.

That's interesting. Obviously genetics works quite differently in Thedas. Genetically compatible, inter-breeding populations would have hybrid vigor, the children being superior to the parents due to promotion of beneficial characteristics and suppression of recessive genes. It's one of the reasons that people with parents from disparate backgrounds/different racial makeups have a tendency to be rather attractive, the children express the best of both and suppress the negatives from each.
