Yeah i was surprised by that one as well, although admittedly I did think Blackwall was acting a little odd...and was rather vague when I asked him questions regarding the Wardens.

I rescued him and let him off scot-free.  I was playing a more forgiving character, plus I wanted his loyalty, give him a second chance and to hear more about him.  Unfortunately he wouldn't expand on his past self which was a little disappointing.  I really wanted to tell him to stop using Blackwalls name and to use his real name instead...sadly not an option.

I thought he is odd too. But I explain it to myself that he don't want to reveal Wardens secrets. I was really shocked after revelations. I would call him by his name too. It's too bad it's not an option.

After revelations he's a different person to me. It's weird to talking to him...

That's my impression after one playtrough. I had almost none banter so I didn't really get to know him.

The first time I called in favors to have him released, then freed him to atone by rejoining the Inquisition.

The second time I sent the traitor lookalike to die in his stead, then promised to hand him over to the Wardens for judgment.

Leaving him in prison seems like a waste. Truthfully he already punishes himself internally more effectively than anything anyone could do to him. Not really sure what the best option is though. Giving Blackwall to the wardens makes him happiest, but I think freeing him is in some ways a harder path to walk, since he has to decide his fate for himself, and figure out on his own how to be the person he wants to be and live with the person he was. It's easier when someone else makes the choices for you.

I used inquisition connections to have him given to me for judgement and then freed him.

As far as i'm concerned he hadn't done anything half of Orlais wouldn't have done as part of the game.

I did the same thing as I did with Loghain in DA:O, give him the chance to atone for his crimes by becoming a Grey Warden. And luckily this time there was no Alistair around to throw a hissy fit.

I had a cold and sad moment of reflection when I wondered what I would have done if one of those murdered children had actually survived and was demanding justice.  I wouldn't quite say "luckily" there was no one to throw a fit...

Did you leave him to rot in prison to eventually be hanged because of what he did or did you commit the crime of smuggling a wanted criminal out to be judged by you instead?

I would have liked to ask for the prisoner to be handed over via diplomatic ways in order to execute him myself, in a honorable way. I respect the man he has become but he still committed the crime. Unfortunately you don't get that option: if you have him handed over to you, you can only pardon him or exile him. That didn't work for me. I had him join the wardens when everything is over, but in my next playthrough I would probably leave him to serve his sentence.
I really don't envy the unfortunate souls who had the romance with him, honestly. That's tough.

I used influence to free him and then judged he should be turned over to the Wardens. My character was in a romance with him and it was pretty wrenching. She was allied with the Grey Wardens, so I wish we could have conscripted him right out of prison, but I guess it fits because you don't turn him over right away.

I feel like the best thing you can do to salvage a horrible situation is to make the lie into truth and let him serve as protector of innocents. Like Cole says, if he could stand between the axes and the carriage, that's what he would do now. As GW he gets to do so symbolically, possibly save many more lives. A lesser man than him would have either hung himself or become hardened and turn bandit. As for GWs vs. setting him free, I felt she did have to show that she wasn't just letting him free.

Busted him out with my political connections (or Josie's I guess).

He's serving the Inquisition.

I actually wanted to kill himself myself. So I freed him thinking that this was going to be an option, but I guess Bioware took that option out. I was really disappointed with the lack of options to punish him, so I just picked the Warden one. He is a scumbag and honestly there's nothing he can really do to redeem himself expect maybe die killing an Arch Dragon at this point. I thought about leaving him in the prison but I hate having unfinished quests.

What happens if you don't complete quest, though? Does he actually die or does the game just go on like nothing happened?

My son was watching me play the first time I had to pass judgement on Blackwall; I was ready to give him to the Wardens (I still want to do that in the future), but my kid was all "NO MOM HE'S YOUR FRIEND HE DESERVES A SECOND CHANCE AND REDEMPTION AND ALL THAT GOOD STUFF LET HIM OFF THE HOOK"

<_< ...I think I taught him too well.

First playthrough, give him back to the Wardens after Corypheus is defeated. Judging him and being high and mighty seemed wrong to my character when half his party was composed of hardened murderers.

Second, let him rot in his cell. Kinda wish I had an option to execute him myself. My character hates the killing of children, and was a warrior herself anyway so no big loss.

I remember being unto him when he said that the Archdemon could be killed by using a sword, it just had to be a Grey Warden sword. Uh-uh. No way a Warden-Constable doesn't know that this is false.

I always knew something fishy about Blackwall and never liked him to be honest even though I am pro Grey Warden. When does this quest come up? After the inner circle quest?

Even though I spoiled myself a little from reading the OP I am not shocked that Blackwall will become a suspect of something. I wish Duncan survived DAO and became a companion to the Inquisitor. I wish it was Blackwall who suffered the 5th Blight assault instead of Duncan.

Duncan went out as a true warden but his loss is a very big one to all the Grey Wardens IMO!

Kind of like Qui Gon Jinn and you are stuck with Count Dooku. To compare Qui Gon and Duncan they both knew what the hell was going on and what was going to happen.

The guy is a beast for me.  I let him go free so he'd stay in my party.  No way I was giving up my best tank.  I'm the Inquisitor, dammit!

First play through I broght him back to Skyhold and chose to give him to the Wardens. This play thought, though I haven't gotten there yet, I am planning on leaving his a** behind in Orlais.

We'll see how well that goes when I get there.

First playthrough didn't talk much with him so never got that far, though was clear he was lying so ignore him and left him to the horses.

Second playhtrough had him atone has himself.

Third playhtrough sent him to the wardens.

Are you aware that Duncan was also a murderer before he became a Warden?

Think most forgot the wardens are more dark heros and anti heros in the end cause of how one game went.

Whatever it takes to end the blight means a lot of there people probbly where not nice at some points in their life

If you just leave him there, by the time you commit to end game stuff, he can't be retrieved (he's dead).

:)

He'll be free in my playthrough. He is Blackwall. Not the other Blackwall. Justice, to me, is not vengeance. He is rehabilitated and is more than productive to the well being of all of Thedas.

EDIT: So far, yes, I would say the same about anyone who had murdered anyone close to me. Put them away and see if there's a possibility of rehabilitation and a true desire to make the world better than how you damaged it.

I didn't do this for the Reapers (Control option) because I didn't view anything about it as rehabilitation.

I was romancing him at the time and took great joy in ripping his heart out with the 'I never loved you' dialogue option. However, I couldn't resist saving him and continuing the relationship. I highly recommended it if you like angst.

First playthrough he was my LI... the Qunari got him out but made him join the Wardens... she didn't want to but felt it was the honorable thing to do.

Second playthrough my elf was involved with Solas and while she didn't dislike the GWs she wasn't their biggest fan.  She freed him.

My human made him join the GWs because while here and BW didn't get along she wanted every sword on deck for the fight and didn't feel he should just get off.

I gave him to the wardens.

I was surprised they had no option to execute him yourself.  He kinda pissed me off since I'd have been willing to overlook everything had he been honest from the start.  Now he's just a traitor and a deserter - and deserters aren't treated kindly in my inquisition.
