How in the world can you say that he is truly a good man why would you believe him he who lied to you all that time how can you trust someone like him. I myself let him rot in prison i never pardoned him not even once he is a good tank though but i discovered that only in my first playthrough ( i did not know what he did in his past but i always knew from the beginning that he was hiding something ) after that he never joins my party again. I think that might be the reason why a lot of you people pardon him because he is a good tank but for me Cassandra is a good tank as well.
I think he's a good man because of what we see and hear about in the game. Before we even meet him he's already risked his life to singlehandedly protect a bunch of random strangers from a horde of demons and refused any sort of payment for doing so. Then, when those same strangers were robbed he took it upon himself to not only get rid of the robbers, but teach some of his charges what they would need to know to prevent such a thing happening again later. Aside from that, there's nothing that I can think of to suggest that he was insincere about his morals and beliefs, regardless of the fact that he lied about his name and affiliation. I guess it's up to the individual to decide if the beliefs he expresses during the game are honest or not, but I personally see no reason to assume that he's conning the Inquisitor.
As for the lie itself, it's really only a problem for my characters if they're romancing Blackwall. In that case it's kind of sketchy that she wouldn't know who he had been, but I wouldn't for a moment suggest that an Inquisitor who's romancing him doesn't know what kind of man he has become since then. If there is no romance involved then most of my Inquisitors would only expect him to come clean about his past if they become close friends, and he does that in his own adorably self-punitive way.
