Well, sh*t....Yep. That part of the map that says Oklahoma? In reality, it's just a deep, endless chasm that leads to a darker, twisted place. The government made up Oklahoma, the lamest sounding state, to keep people away from the madness pit, lest they wake what sleeps within.

Wait, Oklahoma is a myth?!? I've been lied to!
Years ago, Jay Leno read a story where a man was given a ticket for fake license plates... because the officer said there was no such state as West Virginia. Fortunately for him, the story said a court determined there was in fact a state of West Virginia, so the ticket was thrown out.

Oklahoma is suing my home state in the US Supreme Court. No, seriously. So, as the country will soon find out, Oklahoma isn't a myth.
Now, 'dem lady gamers, on the other hand, are like the jackalope. You gotta be drunk, lonely and mistake a deer in the distance with a jack rabbit in the foreground with a bunny with antlers. A drunken myth told only by old timers, and turned into a tourist trap. Women that are Dragon Age/RPG fans? Why, they are just as much of a myth, my friend.

I also think that there is an important distinction here. Are the polls saying 'women gamers' or are they saying 'women who play games'? Those are different things. Some 'gamers' tend to think that only other 'gamers' are important. If a person doesn't identify as a 'gamer', is their opinion less important?
It seems to me that 'gamers' (ie, people who identify as part of that niche subculture) are the ones who are putting the value in that term. Who cares if someone plays different video games than you? Mobile and flash games ARE video games, so arguments that their audiences don't count are short-sighted and weak. They might not be the same audience as the DA:I audience, but they ARE, without any doubt, video game audiences.
I think it has to do with the term.
Think of someone calling themselves a "movie-buff" or a "book aficionado". They would be upset if someone comes in and say they read a few books of especially bland order, and say I am now a Book aficionado.
A gamer in gamer culture are people that constantly check video game forums and gaming news sites. Think of E3 as the second christmas of the year. Watch every single trailer of a game and all the info they can get. Like us here discuss the best "builds" and so on.
The fact that we are even TALKING about number of women in gaming.
A casual gamer doesn't do this. They don't care if Dragon age have stopped having healing spells and now have combat based on attrition instead of waves of enemies.
That do not know Bloodmagic is a no no in Thedas or even what the hell Thedas is.
Playing candy crush although a GAME, doesn't require any of this. Where are the trailers for this game? Will it be at the next E3?
I think you are starting to see the point. Also to join this club of ours we call gamers, all genders are allowed, we only care that you are INTO gaming like us.
That is how I see it. Lately media has tried to pervert this and kill the 'gamer' culture. It's just a bunch of misogynists right? Nevermind the fact there are tons of women here that clearly game hardcore.

Get real I just explained to you why that is.
I don't have a study because NO study ever goes into detail, they make general questions.
Sometimes I wonder if people can think.
I hear religions claim there is a god and they have a "study" called the Bible to prove it. Where is your study to prove them wrong.
Starting to get the point?

They are both video game players. One takes it more serious than the other, but it is a definitive fact that the person who buys an $800 gaming rig for PC gaming and the person who plays Candy Crush while sitting on the bus are both video game players.
By your "the primary purpose of the device" argument, then anyone who uses their gaming PC more than 50% of the time for anything else (email, streaming movies, internet message boards.....) is now no longer a 'video game player'.
You are trying to make a distinction between "gamers" and video game players, but aren't doing so explicitly. I agree that these are two different types of people. But I often see people mixing them up in this exact conversation. Are more than 50% of video game players women? Surveys seem to suggest this. Are more than 50% of gamers women? Likely not, but I've not seen any surveys that look at this.
It's two different constructs. If you want to argue that gamers are more important than video game players, that's one thing. If you want to discount anyone who's not a "gamer" as no longer being a video game player, that's just incorrect.
By that account we can move into semantics and call me a "filmmaker" because I used the camera on my smartphone to make a couple of videos of my dog.
I am now Christopher Nolan or Steven Spielberg, right.

I wish my mon was like you!
Yes, I'm a female, 28 yo, I'm a proffesor in High School and I play lots of videogames. Actually my first videogame was DAO (first single-player, previously I played Ragnarok online and Lineage 2)
How are you a "professor" and teach High School. That makes you a teacher. A Professor has a doctorate and usually teach at College and university level.
I mean since we are on the subject of misuse of the term gamer and all, here seems to be another one.

Anyone else wondered why we are almost exclusively killing male characters in games and hardly ever if at all women?
Just another topic to ponder in this 50% female gamers.
We have some female lead protagonists, like Lara Croft. She is a master at slaying men in Tomb Raider. Where are the female enemies?
How come only the Heroine exist as the bad@ss slayer of bad guys, but there are seldom any female enemies just as capable and trying to slay the hero, whether female or male lead protagonist?

Wut? Are you talking about BioWare games?
Enemy mooks have always been relatively evenly split between men, women, and non-gendered beings in DA.
Most melee units in DA2 tend to be men while ranged tend to be female but that's irrelevant really.

Uh, yeah. It's exactly about semantics. Now are YOU starting to get the point? More women play games than men. That doesn't mean that they are 'gamers'. There is no data on the demographics of 'gamers'.By that account we can move into semantics and call me a "filmmaker" because I used the camera on my smartphone to make a couple of videos of my dog.
