Of course we do. I've been playing video games (nintendo, sega, PC) since I was a kid and I continue to do so as an adult. One thing I make sure not to do is to segregate myself from the gaming community by trying to identify as a "girl gamer". I'm not into that sort of stuff.

Well, CD Projekt's next game hopefully will allow us a custom PC - I'm so stoked for it...whenever the hell we end up getting it >.>

I would be willing to give it a shot.  I've heard mostly good things about them, so I'd like to see if they are as good as their fanboys claim.

Why is the word "females" "highly unnerving?"

Feminine word selection is shockingly tricky.

For males (is that "highly unnerving?"), the following sentence sounds right:
"So some guy at the mall came up to me today and said..."

But this does not:
"So some gal at the mall came up to me today and said..."

Neither of these sound right; they sound too formal:
"So some man at the mall came up to me today and said..."
"So some woman at the mall came up to me today and said..."

These also sound weird:
"So some boy at the mall came up to me today and said..."
"So some girl at the mall came up to me today and said..."

This sounds fine:
"So some dude at the mall came up to me today and said..."

But I'm under the impression that the female ("highly unnerving?") equivalent is offensive:
"So some chick at the mall came up to me today and said..."

I've seen the-opposite-of-male people say that "girl" makes them sound too young, that "woman" or "lady" makes them sound too old, "gal" is an obviously antiquated phrase, and that "chick" is demeaning.

I probably would have titled this "Do women play this game?" if for some reason I had to make a thread like this, but it would have read awkwardly to me.

Lifelong gamer and 12 years a Bioware fan, here. And a woman. Also, everybody who has ever come up to me to complement me on my Kirkwall Messenger bag and talk Dragon Age has been a woman. Yes, we play.

Even if you're not a Witcher fan for whatever reason, CD Projekt is worthy of respect simply on the grounds that 1) they don't stress over releasing in arbitrary windows just for profit 2) they have yet to charge for any DLC and see it as a way to thank fans for their support.

They're also not afraid to really push that mature rating line <.<

Why is the word "females" "highly unnerving?"

I think it's because 'female' is often used as an adjective, not a noun (it can be a noun on it's own, but it's usually used as an adjective).  So when it stands alone, it seems a little off.  It's kind of like 'homosexual' in that way.  Better used as a adjective than noun.

Also, try your own logic:

"So some male at the mall came up to me today and said..."

Would anyone ever say that?

This is going OT, but I'll address some responses regarding Witcher.

I know that it's based on existing source material, but if they ever create a game where you can choose your PC (or, even better, create your PC), I'd give it another go.  Hell, I might even give it another go if it were a different PC.

What we know is that Witcher 3 is the last game featuring Geralt. If you read the books where Ciri is the actual main character and looked at recent Witcher 3 media (e.g "elder blood" trailer) I feel that it is highly suggested that the next game will feature her.

I wouldn't get your hopes up (see above)

Also a daughter. (what's the deal with magic all of a sudden?).

Lets just say Ciri has some special sauce heritage.

I legitimately have no idea who Ciri is.  Can I guess what she looks like?

* long white hair

* giant breasts with copious cleavage

* oversized eyes, tiny nose, full red lips

* clear pale skin with no scars or markings

* * no pants?  (that one is a shot in the dark, but I'll go with it)

How many did I get right?  I'll wait to see answers before I google her.  (ew, sounds dirty.....)

@ScepticMatt - sorry, not talking about Witcher 3 :)

I'm talking about CyperPunk 2077 - unless they've announced the "protaganist" for that game already and I missed it?

You are going to be surprised I think. She's not actually a medieval hooker!

Ciri is the exiled princess of Cintra, one of the northern kingdoms.

She was adopted by Geralt and later Yennefer.

She got magic and Witcher training (without mutagens).

Because of her heritage and genes, she is hunted everywhere.

Images: (she's roughly 20 year old in W3)

Spoiler

Edit:

*Lesbian?

About that...

Spoiler

* giant breasts with copious cleavage
* oversized eyes, tiny nose, full red lips
* clear pale skin with no scars or markings
* * no pants?  (that one is a shot in the dark, but I'll go with it)

Not as many as you'd think. Hair is spot on, she uses it to cover a large scar. Boobage is there but modest by fantasy game standards and she wears a shirt. Eyes seem normal, nose is small, lips qualify as full I guess. Pants are there, protective leather.

Damn!  I wish I would have thought of that one.  I actually would have guessed "bisexual with a male preference but interested in threesomes with other gals".

Indeed.  The giant facial scar is kind of awesome. Given the dudebro reaction to Cass's scar, how does it work for Ciri?  Are they equally offended or is it okay because she has a small jaw and long hair?  Legit question, but it sounds a little snarky.

I only got two right out of five.  Well, two and a half.  She's got huge breasts, but at least they aren't barely covered.  And she wears pants.  It saddens me that this was up for debate, but good for her.  She seems to have a little sense to her.

I am not completely sold, but she seems a bit more interesting than Geralt already.

That sample sentence was used to illustrate how difficult I've found feminine descriptors to be in the past, not necessarily how well "males" vs "females" reads.

The more I read it, "do men play this game" and "do women play this game" probably sound okay. All of them sound weird to me except "do guys play this game?" I don't find "do males/females play this game" to be any worse than other options.

Since "dudebro" often tends to become shorthand for "all straight dudes" here, I still maintain that those plebs with no taste are most definitely a minority. A loud, obnoxious minority.

And "females" is unnerving in this context because it's so clinical. It's as if we were discussing cattle or some strange alien life form.

"What a fine specimen that human female is. Bring it to the lab for further study."

When I use 'dudebro', I most certainly am not referring to all straight dudes.  That would be a huge disservice to many fine gentlemen.  I use it to refer to 'dudebros' exclusively.
