You can't say women play mostly casual games without backing it up, though. I think it's a bit of a misconception.

From reading some stuff over the years, mostly just the ESA easily digestible stats and such, seems like puzzle games are the most popular genre with both genders. And, that things like strategy and RPG are relatively evenly split.

Like this one. http://igea.wpengine...ESA_EF_2013.pdfIt doesn't have the genre/gender split. I may have been thinking a few years earlier. You could easily search if you wanted.

I read this one a while back and it hurt my head. My own conclusion is, "It's complicated, so why generalise?" http://www.gamasutra...preferences.php

@Finc: I think you're exaggerating your statistics. 80% of DA:I players men? That's very, very overstated.

Anyway, the latest stats on the issue are here although not much detail was present in them: http://www.vg247.com...en-research-pc/

Yes, we do. I say this as a 27y/o female

We even play other video game including MMORPG's (much to the huge surprise to any teenage boy).

I've clocked in 339hrs in Inquisition thus far. Just completed my... 5th playthrough? or 6th? Anyway. I played WoW for about 6years (until Pandaland killed me). I still play SWTOR off and on. I've played DAO and DA2. Kingdoms of Amular:Reckoning. And this list could go on. I even still play console games, well I attempt to anyway, Lol. Playing on a PC for the last 6years has damaged my ability to play with a controller as I found out recently.

Yet more proof that those whole gender thing is a load of bollocks, gender is meaningless. Were all gamers, simple as, end of. Men dont own gaming, women dont own gaming, we all share it equally. Games are fun, we all enjoy playing the, and we all enjoying talking about them and sharing our experiences. Can we please go back to doing just that?

Where the hell did I say gaming belongs to male gamers only? I am simply stating the CURRENT reality. There is absolutely nothing wrong with women playing games. Most Triple A console/PC games are clearly not aimed at a female gaming audience, this is the reason why I say I doubt 50% buying this or most other big budget "console" games are women. Why would I care if it is 50% I only care that the game is good and something I want to play. If this game was not something I was interested in, I wouldn't buy it, it's as simple as that.

Where is the bigotry and sexism. It's like a person can't even talk today.

Some of the best games have had female writers, like Uncharted.

22% of game developers are women. That will increase and that is great, to an extent. Women do not in general seem as interested in programming as men.

I don't like SKEWED "facts" that is some kind of agenda/propaganda tool feminists use to harp on us "misogynistic" gamers.

I am NOT the one deciding how games should be made. I am not making Call of Duty etc.

It is just a simple fact most female gamers do not have an interest in a majority of these triple A titles. Do you have a concept of a game aimed towards women audience? What kind of a game is that? I am genuinely interested. I could try to get my wife to buy it.

No one has excluded anyone here, only your own crazy notion of that.

I don't understand this.  I am a 58 year old woman and been crazy on hardware ever since computers came around.  Never played a flash game in my life or on a tablet let alone my phone.  Need my big screen for games.  I mite be a minoraty but not a curiosity!  I've been playing since Amstrad and gaming became very serious after Quake and MDK.

It is so antiquated that woman stil are things that knit and good for bearing /raising children.  I think it is more a problem of men that it is solely these qualities they want/seek for a wife.  If different they seem scared of the competition they vehemently deny exists.

I'm ok with women playing the game - as long as the housework is done first.

Fantasy always had a lot of female players/readers/watchers, especially Bioware rpg's because of the social and romantic aspects.

I used to think that. Wasted a lot of fun time.  :)  Making up for it now.  What got me in, was actually Dragon Age Origins-billed as an "adult" or mature themed rpg, and I thought-well, what the hell. I enjoy fantasy and roleplaying, let's see how it works on a computer...

Yeah, so, pretty well, as it turns out... ;)

I can never understand why some men are so insistent that they play games more than women.

As if it would be such an awful thing for a game to have more female fan than male fans.

In my experience, most men actually really do want more female gamers. They just want women who like the same games that they do, and since there is this perception that many women want to change the face of gaming, they therefore do not fit that criteria. If you like the games, why change them? Never mind that this might be completely false for most women (though there are undoubtedly some female Jack Thompsons out there).

The women in gaming numbers are inflated because the reports, which are generally put out by the industry, have a very loose definition of a gamer. Pick up a controller once and you're a woman who is a gamer. Only play Candy Crush on your phone? Congratulations, you're a gamer!

Now for a series like DA, I can see the number of women that play it being legitimately higher than many other games. It's a series that actively courts female players with its setting and lore, and has a very vocal and dedicated female fanbase who undeniably have had a role in shaping the series.

It is so antiquated that woman stil are things that knit and good for bearing /raising children.  I think it is more a problem of men that it is solely these qualities they want/seek for a wife.  If different they seem scared of the competition they vehemently deny exists.

It's not the sole thing a man looks for, but I don't see how it's a problem even if it was. Marriage is traditionally centered around procreation. If having kids is important to someone, then they should consider how a prospective mate would be for raising their offspring, no? That goes for both men and women.

Ahh, so its just hobbby-snobbery then?

I'm not a real gamer because I don't play the proper games like the ones you play.

It's not snobbery, it's taking a realistic view on genres.

Maybe 50% or more of all "gamers" are women according to these industry reports, but that doesn't mean that 50% is evenly distributed in every genre or that every gaming niche need conform for an audience that doesn't play their game in large numbers.
