Because physical copies are sold by retailers who are trying to move stock in competition with other retailers. Digital doesn't really have that problem and most people far prefer digital these days.
Finally broke down and ordered it

OMG use a controller! Get one for 20 bucks or less. Use it on MANY games, not only DAI.
The entitlement of the PC master race is out of freaking control!
And I say that as a lifelong PC gamer who happily plays DAI on my PC with a....GASP!!...game controller!!!
You know, I agree with the sentiment that entitlement ought to be avoided in posts. But not everyone can just drop an extra $20 on a controller, that's a very tone deaf thing to say. For those of us who have no controller and won't get one, the controls are something that must be dealt with. I personally disagree with those who say the controls are "abysmal," "unplayable," "broken," et. cetera, but that's just me. This kind of platform baiting crap is really counterproductive.
Anyway, OP, I think you'll find the game is perfectly playable and hugely enjoyable.

It's a good game
. I'd honestly ignore those who say it's a bad game and you find out if you like it yourself. People have different opinions which most people don't seem to understand. I agree, I love to use a controller, have always used a controller and it won't change so there's no point in people bashing people who do. I can make my choice what to use when I play games, you think controllers suck, well good for you
(people). I don't listen to reviews either cause I have liked games people have given bad score's. games are not to made to fit everyone's enjoyment, only to grab a certain audience (some try to go to far and add stuff to get multiple audiences and it backfires) OPINIONS people, are opinions for a reason, it is not a fact that controllers suck, a game sucks, or someone is wrong, it's all based off your opinions. Enjoy the game OP:)

Congrats, you did the right thing. One advice, be malleable don't stop at the first hindrance to just run the the forum with complains. The game is good, big and deserve to be played until the end.

I still don't get the complaints about the PC-controls, but then I also managed to play Dark Souls with K + M (it was more the bleak world and bland storytelling that stopped me playing, not the controls)...I guess I am unfair but maybe some people are just too spoiled ^^
Ah okay,I take that back. No need to hate me! I move on! Just put the torches and pitchforks back where you go 'em! It's okay, I am leaving! No...please...no, put that away! NOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!

Indeed, once I realized the pc controls weren't that great, I switched to gamepad and enjoyed the game the same if not better. The "people" these days.

I don't own a console nor do I plan to, so why should I have to buy a controller to play a PC game. I bought this game to play on the PC using the classic PC controls which are keyboard & mouse.
Most PC gamer expects to treat as a PC gamer not console gamer convert.

I'm still trying to understand how it is a sense of entitlement to expect a PC game to have better controls on a K & M than a controller/gamepad, or decent PC controls in general. If they started making keyboards that worked with consoles I'm sure console gamers would expect their games to work better with a controller than a keyboard and rightfully so.
I think it's more ridiculous to just say go spend an extra $20 on top of the cost of the game from something the person may never use again.

Some games you just have to use a controller for, and that shouldn't be an issue. I got used to play Assassin's Creed with keyboard and mouse, but I could NOT handle the ship controls in Black Flag that way. I had to use a controller. I ended up using an emulator and a PS3 controller, but for DAI I went ahead and bought a MS controller for 25 whole bucks. Not a bad deal considering I'm going to want to use it for other games (Alice comes to mind, as does Unity if it ever makes itself playable).
I appreciate that Steam always says which games play better with controller, so it may have been nice if Origin had mentioned it for DAI. I don't find it necessary to play with a keyboard and mouse, and it gets this massive laptop off my lap. Yes, the PC controls are bad, but I thought the same thing about Skyrim.

I honestly don't have a problem with the K & M controls. I guess I'm just not clear on what in particular is wrong them. Sure, better tooltips would be nice, but overall I haven't found the controls to be a hindrance to my enjoyment of the game.

I hope the next patch(es) come out before I get the game, especially for better PC controls. Amazon just dropped the price to $39.99 for the physical copy (why the heck would the physical copy be cheaper than the download which is still at $59.99???). That was my price point to pull the trigger and get the game.
I will pray for your soul =(
You will try to love the game since you bought it... Itried... most people tried... then eventually you will realize you'd better spent your money on toilet papper.
