I've come to grips with the AI in Nightmare for the most part and haven't even disabled the AI entirely, but I was thinking one more option in their behavior, that seems comparatively simple to implement would be the following:
A "Positioning" Preference. It would offer the options for the AI to preferentially place itself (limited by line of sight) either: Near to, Far from, or at the Flank of its active target. Near to would be effectively be indifferent for melee classes since they would be drawn in to attack, but could make a Knight Enchanter actually wade into a melee while spellcasting to make better use of passives. Far from, would simply force AI's to avoid melee range while staying in range. At the Flank would simply compel your rogues to make use of the flanking bonus that otherwise seems to exist exclusively for PC-controlled rogues.
Intelligently setting AI's to prefer avoidance or stealth abilities has dramatically helped my non-tanks survive, but I still find mages standing in melees and Sera bouncing arrows off the shields of defenders that aren't even aware of her. With this option added, I would be almost entirely satisfied with the combat system.
Thanks for a terrific game.
