Video: Sexism and sexuality in games

"Are we requiring the female protagonist to work harder and sell more in order to prove herself?" asks Dragon Age lead writer David Gaider, in this GDC 2013 video about sexism and sexuality in games, free courtesy of GDC Vault.

Actually people that work and "fight" for a living don't look like buffed up meat chunks either.      Its actually the muscle bound brute image portrayed in other media that is inaccurate.    Huge difference between bulky muscle and lean muscle.

Who do you think is stronger a guy who works out at muscle beach with a 18 inch bicep?   or your average ordinary chimpanzee with a 4 inch bicep?    One of them can easily rip your arm right out of the socket.

Your comparing an animals biology to that of a humans? Doesn't really work.

People that fight for a living are mostly doing cardio and lifting high reps relatively low weight for power, hence why they are not bulky like a person that lifts for looks or a power lifter.

I'm pretty sure the generally accepted idea is not "stand there like a pell and use your mass to absorb the impacts". That's just a specialist technique for the elite class of fighters known as "dead meat".

HEY!!!! That's how I bounced when I bounced, let 'em hit me until they got tired, then took 'em outside.

but I suppose if you want to be technical Cassandra's a little thin to be doing that.

Bruce Lee used to do inverse curls with heavy weights, and he was so tiny I could fit him into my pocket and still have room for my keys.

Strong does not always amount to huge. Our idea of the archetypal warrior - Conan being a good example - is relatively modern.

The real life Spartans would look at the guys in 300 as being overly buff nancy boys. And then chop their heads off.

Any given day I can be at the gym and see women of different (fit) body types lifting weights or otherwise working out. None are going to be sporting massive muscles like you see in bodybuilding magazines because to do that you have to have literally no body fat and do a lot of other bizarre crap to make it so. Same for the men, but a little less extreme on the body fat front.

And I'm sure any one of them can outlift or withstand far more punishment than a lot of folks sitting here. :P

I do agree a bit about the male elves though, I get they're supposed to look different from humans and all but they really come across as adolescent boys in body shape. Female elves look more built than those poor bastards do.

Women who fight and work for a living should not have the body of an anorexic super model. Time to be realistic on how a womens body would look.

Apparently, you're not playing the same BioWare games that I am.

Human beings are animals, we are homosapieans a hominidae in the same taxonomic family of primates as chimps and gorillas.

A video game with combat that is not real

In real life, Whirlwind Swing would be a projectile attack, effecting enemies with a Panic Debuff as they struggle desperately to wipe away your vomit.

Bruce Lee didn't absorb blows from big chunky men with his body, it wasn't really in his fighting philosophy.

That doesn't matter. Our biology is different. This argument of "monkeys have smaller biceps then us but are stronger!" is useless.

They have the same body type for everyone, and extra body type takes up resources. If they have a rounder female protagonist then the rest of the NPCs would be like that as well. That was the reason why female dwarves didn't make an appearance in DA2 because it takes up too much resources. If people complain about females being like supermodel then they should bring up males being supermodel type as well. They are both idealized versions of ourselves. Since the games have a lot of interaction, clipping and positioning would also very hard with varying body types, and I would rather the body type by of idealized version of myself, male or female, if I want to at an regular Joe's body, I look in the mirror or stare at the street. I do wish the Qunari's female would have been bigger though and more muscular considering how exaggerated qunari male's physiques are.

One of the main reasons i cant play as a female in bioware games is: NOODLE ARMS! You can forgive it for a mage or rogue(still those arms look very cringeworthy to me), but for a warrior??

Im not asking them to be bulky wrestlers on steroids but a little muscle on the hands wont hurt dont you think?

And with what happened to male elves in DA:I, I cant play as them either( i think their shoulder width is narrower than Sera's!), it seems to me that im playing as a 14 yo and its too creepy to romance somebody. So leaves only human male for me, though its not such a bad thing, im boring i like to play humans)

And you misunderstand me - I was expanding on your sarcasm.

The idea of making a fantasy game overly realistic is absurd.
