Chests are kind of pointless right now anyway, and I expect they will be adding more.

I am as well. Got about 120,000 gold saved up, and no interest in spending it. I guess I just got tired of getting absolutely nothing at all and having no use for craftable materials. :P

Bad loot is one of the most posted about problems with this game on these forums, in no post has Bioware said they plan on doing anything about it or even commented on it for that matter, save your gold if you like but I feel like it is probably an exercise in futility.

You mean a post by a bioware forum moderator who doesn't really have much to do with the development process outside of community relations? ; p

once upon a time in 2012 mass effect 3 forums the devs themselves would post quite frequently

I would be pretty surprised if they were allowed to talk about the loot/chest mechanics to be honest.

Nor would I imagine they actually have much say in them - I would guess its all mandated by some EA exec based off statics on what kind of reward schedules result in people paying the most money to open more chests or something like that.

BWE Amelia who by the way is the most active moderator that posts on these forums is a game programmer and has posted that if you read as far as page 2 you will find the topic ( called BWE plz fix MP) , so yes I would say their are credible people posting on this forum and not just glorified babysitters, but its your time and gold so do what you want.

Just saying, "We are aware of the communities concerns with the loot mechanic and we are looking at options for making it more enjoyable," would be more than enough information for 99% of the people that actually read and post here on these forums, it gives no specific timetable, it gives no specific details as what is going to happen or how it would be changed, this isn't the f ing Pentagon discussing national security, its a console video game that "probably" 50% of the people that bought it for the multiplayer have already left for other games due this one issue. Its probably too late at this point for them to do anything with it, almost all of the threads on the forum are negative even though this is an extremely small sampling of the player base it still says something if even the white knights stop sticking up for you.

If chest loot is skewered towards better quality items depending on your Promotions or something (which it probably is) then it would make sense to save Gold until you've promoted a bunch of times.  I'll probably start doing this myself.

Its not, I've got almost 60 promotions so far, its the same as day 1, Prestige level\ Achievement rank is also a bust I'm top 15, any other Voodoo you think might work feel free to try, such as only looting chests with a lvl 20 character, or opening (up to 60) in a row, go ahead and try but I could save you some time just by telling you I have already done it and it didn't change anything. Not everything I have got is worthless but so far only 1 lvl 20 purple item in almost half a million gold spent.

If that's true, then you must have remarkably bad luck. I have spent about 360k and these are just my bows.

It is absolutely not tied to prestige rank.

I'm at 225 rank (over 200k spent) now and some of my best stuff I got around 2 weeks or 100 ranks ago.

I have one unique weapon worth using, item lvl 20 bow of the Griffin and that's freaking it in 210k spent on chests.

It seems like some people are more likely to get certain items, those items for me, and the majority of the people I have talked to, happen to be sub lvl 15 purples that are outclassed by the white common lvl 20+ weapons, grats to you though.

I definitely think if you're not stacked with everything being a perfect item, hoarding gold and spending it all at once is your best bet, I think it confuses the RNG a little bit by doing that.

But yeah obviously if you have all the perfect gear save your gold.

Personally I just treat it like the Roll 20 system. If you do it enough times consecutively the payouts start getting higher until they drop right off into the low "screw you and your hard work" zone.
