Is there any point in having Death from Above on your AI-controlled companions? I haven't noticed either Varric or Sera taking advantage of higher ground on their own, and I have trouble getting them to stay there using hold position commands.

So I'm wondering if that entire side of the Archery tree is worth it for companions. I know that Leaping Shot is nice in situations, but the AI seems to be terrible using it, using it in so many situations it's not needed. Then Strafing Shot doesn't seem worth it for companions.

So is that left side of the tree worth it at all for companion archers?

And on a related note, does anyone notice Varric use his Caltrop skill on his own? This too seems like an entirely useless skill, no?

Leaping shot is great, but not on a companion, I've noticed. They will leap off every cliff they can find. I would just take the right side. On an AI standpoint, first blood and pincushion are a lot better than death from above and strafing shots. If using Varric, I would disable all of his traps and just use them manually if he gets in a bind. But definitely take caltrops and the two passives underneath it, Looked like it hurt and cheap shot.

The AI won't utilize the elevation passive, no.

They will also kill themself with leaping shot.

And run into melee, which makes the movement one near useless.

Varric uses Caltropes -- he runs into melee and dies. Disable it.

Don't take the left side of archery for the AI. The right one is a lot better. The AI can even use explosive shot decently ;)
