Hi guys -

So, I'm having a hard time figuring out what Mark of Death does.

It reads:

You mark your enemy, and every hit on them adds part of its power to the mark's damage. Trigger your mark when you are ready and watch them fall from injuries they never even noticed. You can manually trigger the mark early for bonus damage.

STORED DAMAGE: 100%

DURATION: 8 seconds

I added the next tier, which reads:

While it is active, Mark of Death Leaves target vulnerable to even more damage. 20% armor reduction.

First, what does this do, how does it work and finally, how do I trigger it early?

I got MoD because I saw so many people on this forum talk about how awesome it is. Took a while to get because Varraic was MIA at Skyhold but I finally figured that out ...

Thank you.

I took it.. then unequipped it because I saw no value and it was taking up a slot.

1. Cast Mark of Death on something.

2. The game records all of the damage you do to the target while MoD is active.

3. Trigger MoD (by pressing the hotkey again).  All of the damage it recorded in step 2 gets inflicted on the target again, all at once (with a possible crit?).

I'm not sure the "early bonus damage" actually works, but maybe someone with more experience can clarify that.

Btw, MoD is I believe the single most damaging attack in the game.  There's a video of someone triggering it for over 148,000 damage.

My understanding of this (And I used the hell out of this with my Archer Rogue) is that you set up MoD, and then start dealing damage to the marked target. When the timer runs out, all the damage dealt to the target while MoD has been active is re-dealt all at once. Every hit every member of the party has sent its way. Manually triggering MoD before the timer runs out adds to the total damage re-dealt. For instance, you might do 800 damage by letting it run out, but triggering before then will do 1200.

Those aren't exact numbers, but they get the point across.

To trigger the Mark, just hit the activation button you have it mapped to in the battle menu when you're happy with how much damage you figure you'll be getting back.

I also have to say, while I'm not certain the re-dealing damage effect works if you let MoD simply run out the timer, I feel like it did that the few times I forgot to trigger it or let it slip by cause I was trying to get as much damage in as I could before I triggered it.

If it doesn't still do it when it just runs out, that's just stupid.

Thank you. I have been marking the stronger enemies and I wasn't sure what was happening, mainly because i'm a DW rogue and the action moves so fast.

I would try to activate early by triggering it early, but wasn't even sure if that was working. The icons is red, and it often looks like I can't use it (but I can) so that is a bit confusing.

Playing on hard. Good to know. Thank you for the replies. Further input from others welcome, too. =)

When it's active there should be a notification icon (tiny version of the ability icon above your ability bar on PC) and also the main icon should be "lit up," like Stealth is when it's active.  That means you can trigger it.  It only lasts 8 seconds, though.  I haven't used it extensively, but my limited experience suggests it doesn't trigger automatically when it runs out.  Which sucks.

When you cast MoD on an enemy, the ability's icon will change colors to an orange-ish tone and it will stay this color for the duration of MoD on the enemy (8 seconds). During this time, any damage will be "recorded", and when it expires it will do the total sum of recorded damage (effectible doubling all damage done in this time).

If you press the ability while active (orange-ish color), MoD will trigger early (before it reaches full duration) and in theory deal the recorded damage plus a certain bonus. I had mixed results triggering early, sometimes it seemed not to do any damage, and when I was able to notice damage done the bonus was either too small to notice or simply not there. So I recommend letting it run the full duration, especially if upgraded.

A well timed MoD is awesome. During dragon fights I've had MoD detonations (at full duration) for 90k damage, not even trying too hard, so the reported 140k sounds very possible.

The trick is to cast MoD, then do all the burst damage you can for the next few seconds, let it expire and do crazy damage. My strategy was this: MoD > Stealth (while moving to flank position) > Hidden Blades > Twin Daggers > Deathblow, while other classes do their respective bursts.

The upgrade is 20% armor reduction during the 8 second duration, or less if triggered early.

I took it.. then unequipped it because I saw no value and it was taking up a slot.

I guess the fact that for a full 8 seconds it doubles up the damage the WHOLE party does on an enemy was not readily apparent?

An Assassin, having thrown Death mark on a high health enemy and then enter stealth and after activated hidden blades with Stealth auto-crit etc doing a whopping 5,400% weapon damage more or less (1,800% base damage upgraded hidden blades, + 50% extra damage in stealth and then the automatic critical potentially doubling that damage or more), then be default that is doubled by the Death mark, for 10,800% weapon damage (remember for ONE used ability), then top it off with all the damage your party member do on the same enemy and even MORE damage YOU do during the remaining seconds.

Yeah that has no value at all.

What the above poster said.

It's the most damaging ability in the game and the reason no other spec can ever outdps an Assassin in theory. As MoD always doubles the entire party's dps.

Cast Mark of Death, Mark of the Rift with full focus, Thousand Cuts + Firestorm and nearly everything will die after it pops. It can even kill dragons in one pop.

The only reason not to take it, is if you want the game to be harder on you. Because everything becomes easy when you do slot it.

It works.

I took 1/3 of the Higland Ravager health with this combo.

Cast Mark Of Death on him, then I immediately used all my 300% stored Mark of the Rift on him. Then pushed the button again.

(He was just suffering. I actually felt sorry for him. It's not a pretty sight seeing anyone completely defenseless in this way).

I don't know if the damage my party does also hit him? I can't figure this out yet.

if cole uses MoD and you use thousand cuts it will be thousand cuts x2 damage if cole deploys the MoD shut off

At least MoD is true to its name.
